When she crossed over, she was just a ship. But when she came back... she was bullshit!

I *so* wanted the silhouette in a labcoat right before they revealed the ARV to turn out to be Frohike.

Nope, the next two are traditional standalone episodes.
Well, so far... no, no they're not. Things are tying together ala Fringe.

They have a lot more to pack into 6 episodes if they want to tie it up in a bow or have a shot at a full season/seasons. That said, Fringe was a GOOD DEAL like X-Files. Closest show to it, really.

The conspiracy talk was un-subtle at best, and cringe-worthy at worst. This. I was kind of ok with the whole thing until that big long drawn out back and forth speech with Joel McHale that laid out the conspiracy and I was like BUUHHH WUUUUUTTTT? It sounded like it was written by goddamn Alex Jones and that is a terrible terrible thing. That it was nonsensical even by the standards of the X-Files and Chris Carter's usual shitty exposition didn't help. I kept expecting the DNA test to say that Svetlana was their daughter and cringed at the whole implication that Mulder was sleeping with her (maybe that was just me). It felt off. There were some good bits though, enough for me to keep watching. I mean, shit... it's X-Files. I watched both movies and that horrible finale, this was at least better than that last movie.

Pretty sure the conspiracy crazy talk was supposed to be taken exactly like that, crazy talk.

I think McHale's shtick was supposed to be hiding in plain sight, he was hooked into real things (like the ARV research team) and he was hiding that behind his P. T. Barnum meets Bill O'Reilly act.
It could have been worse, could have been better. Duchovny's glassy stare doesn't work nearly as well as it used to.

Ya'll jaded and/or don't remember X-Files. This is literally as if they kept writing the 15 missing years and we just didn't get to see the footage. The show hasn't missed a beat. While there's an argument that they should've missed 3-4 beats and jumped a bit forward in a different way, I'm just not seeing these complaints.
Also, Mulder spent full story arcs explaining fucking conspiracies in the original series.
That said, I watched the whole series again last year, so it's all fresh. Maybe you all should also.
Edit: I guess, most importantly, they needed to write this in such a way that these 6 episodes were the true end to the X-files and I suspect they have 2 endings for episode 6 in the bag on the offchance they order a full season+.

I also re-watched the old series a few months ago in anticipation of the new series and I'm good with everything so far although Mulder needs to trim his eyebrows.

FWIW I'm with you on this. The tone and story sense was exactly the same as the originals.

This is X-Files all right! And yes, Mulder is just as Mulder as he always was. If anything, Scully's changed a bit. More accepting maybe, I dunno. Full disclosure, I've tuned out everything after Doggett's appearance, so continuity seems just fine.

You don't have to watch it all. Here's a list of episodes that are part of the actual story and/or really good episodes. Ofc that's just one person's opinion, there's plenty of other similar lists on the interwebs.

The "actual story" of X-Files was the worst part of the show. It was dull, repetitive and never went anywhere. In many ways it was like the Lost-era tease-with-no-payoff plotting style, before Lost.

The second episode felt really disjointed, like none of the scenes connected together well at all. Lots of "go here because plot demands it" transitions that didn't really make a whole lot of sense. LOL at Scully and Mulder just "happening" to be there when girl shows her tk powers, thus confirming the whole alien DNA thing. Felt like a lot of really lazy writing.
This is not the X-Files I remember.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something. We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

Perfect casting with Rhys Darby. So much fan service in this one too.

Did they reboot this series so hard that they shot it in Vancouver? I'm seeing lots of woods and fields and grass, and not so much desert.
The stoners in the cold open are reboots, too. The same actors played essentially the same roles in the original run of the series.

Yeah, that's likely it as much as anything. A lot of time has passed and most of these episodes are feeling really a little too meta. It feels more like the series itself is a person who's having a mid-life existential angst crisis.
The episode with Murray from Flight of the Conchords was really funny though.

I can't get behind the whole Agent Einstein thing. I don't mind Lauren Ambrose, but the every time they say Agent Einstein, it's like nails on a chalkboard. What a dumb name to use for a one off quip.
The last half of this mini-series was awful. "Babylon" was one of the worst X-File episodes I can remember. Terrible way to go out as well, whole thing felt terribly rushed with everyone jumping from one odd conclusion to another.
Ohh well, I liked the first 3 episodes.

It felt like they crammed a whole (25 episode) season's worth of overall story arc and "character moments" into the 6 episodes at the cost of the individual episodes (and overall arcs were never really the strong point of x-files in my opinion).

Jesus Christ, that was a colossal, epic failure on every level. That was an entire season's arc in one hour long episode, just randomly flailing from one ridiculous wild ass guess to the next without rhyme or reason. I didn't think Chris Carter could get worse than the first series finale yet he did.
The cabal is apparently run by Jeff Bezos and those libertarian shitheads who want to retreat to Rand Island.
