I am cautiously curious. Hopefully this will be X-Files seasons 1-4 and not post-season 4.

This can't be successful. It's tied to a time and place. Anything trying to capture X-Files spirit can't go back there. PoI is probably a better X-FIles for today than making new X-FIles today.

I know, I know!  I'm shivering with anticipation already!  Or maybe that's just prickly heat.  Anyway, I can't wait either!  I'm nearly finished watching the old ones now just to be ready.

I really hope it doesn't suck.  I will cry real tears if it does.

I wish they'd "rebooted" Millennium instead of X-Files (and I'm sure they would have gotten Lance Henriksen alot cheaper/easier than the David Duchovny / Gillian Anderson -duo... considering Lance has been doing Asylum movies lately).

Yeah.  I mean, I'll be watching this anyway, but mostly out of morbid curiosity.  No expectation of it being a tenth as good as the old show.

Duchovny and Anderson have done what, exactly, recently?  I think this is budget friendly.

I'd really like it if they started it with Mulder waking up and realizing everything since he left the series (and, honestly, everything for about a season or so prior to that) was a coma based dream.  Maybe even set the series in the 90s.

Californication. Which was spectacular up until the last season, which is par for nearly all television (including say, Rome).  Gillian Anderson is in the hottest show currently on television and stars in the upcoming season (Hannibal).

Budget has nothing to fucking do with it. They could get any amount of money they want.

I tried getting through the whole show a few years back, but the shitty monster of the week episodes really turned me off. If they were all aliens/conspiracy focused I might have been able to get through it.

I thought Californication ended a ways back.  My mistake.  Looks like Duchovny was making $200K per episode and Anderson $100K per episode for Hannibal - not the cheapest.

I kind of liked the "Monster of the Week/Twilight Zone/Alien Conspiracy" rotation, It kept things entertaining without having it bog down in "How are we going to come up with 20+ episodes of Alien Conspiracy stuff this season" wheel-spinning. The "Twilight Zone" episodes were the best in a lot of ways, it let them bring in a lot of Science Fiction authors with weird and interesting ideas, the MotW episodes were more filler than anything else, but some of them were still really fun (like the "COPS Crossover" episode).

Without X-Files, I don't think we ever would have seen the Whedonverse, or any of the other "Spiritual Successors" like Supernatural. Prime time science fiction was deader than dogshit until the X-Files Friday Night Miracle.

--Dave

EDIT: Here's the semi-official "Mythology" episode list (http://x-files.wikia.com/wiki/Mythology), and here is a fan-created list (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/175270-the-x-files-conspiracy-episode-list-discussion/) that includes a few episodes the "Mythology" set doesn't, mostly because they introduce or explore characters that were important in that arc (Kryzek and Smoking Man, mostly).

EDIT2: I guess I should say "Non Space Opera" sci-fi was dead, and people were getting burned out on that.

Ditto.  I think that's part of why the movies sucked -- they focused on the least fun part of the series.

Both the monster and storyline episodes were fine, for the first three seasons or so. Show totally took a nosedive after that.

This. It really fell off after that episode where they found the alien ship in the desert for a cliffhanger. This was one of those shows that needed a definite ending date so someone could say "FINISH IT, YOU FUCK!" because despite the show having ended, the story has still not been given anything like an ending. To me, the alien stuff was the most interesting, and the first movie was a good continuation of that, but it did seriously disappear up its own ass after season 3. The monster of the week shows were filler but some of them were really well done. I mean, the hair fetish serial killer guy Donnie was an episode that STILL creeps me out, and the actor that played Donnie should have gotten a lot bigger roles than he did afterwards.

Which was interestingly a MotW and Conspiracy episode... and just well done.

Interesting coincidence: Friday evening, we were set to introduce the boy to some more classic movies.  This time it would be Terminator (Netflix).  He was taking his time and so I was poking around Netflix; I quickly found the original X-Files and so my wife and I started watching the pilot.  Fast-forward, my son is the world's newest X-Files fan.

I am so excited for XF to return!  Can't wait to see how M&S have changed and what they are up to.  Can you imagine Mulder's twitter?  Scully even twittering at all?  All sorts of things have changed in twenty years, plenty of new story ideas to go around.  I bet Mulder's FB is filled with crop circles and blurry UFO pics.

That's actually an interesting comment.  Watch the second episode and ask yourself what things would be like if they had smartphones, or if Scully had internet access in the motel.  She would have uploaded everything to the cloud before the place was torched.  Also, no caller ID.

Considering I watched the last episode of the X-Files and it was all about that Mulder had found the truth and he could do fuck all about it (there was an alien invasion coming in 2012) And smoking man died as a hippie in a cave, I think what M&S have been doing is "getting off the drugs and explaining why they were fucking wrong about everything.

The last episode of the X-files was utter shit, by the way. So not enthusiastic about a new series.

So I'm now on S02E22 on Netflix. The show really holds up well except the technology stuff. It could almost be a modern day show.

I had watched this show religiously until around when the first movie came out, then I went off to college. I never really finished the series. Looking forward to getting back in to it.

Heathen!

I don't think its particularly heretical to say that the end of the ex-files was really bad.  Last few seasons had stretched the show longer than it should have gone.  They had no real arcs left to cover, and the main actors left the show.  It went the exact same route as Lost, where it should have ended several seasons sooner.  The end was better than the last few seasons had been, but it still felt like a rushed let down after all the build up and superb storytelling of the majority of the series.  I looooooved the X-files, but it was a victim of American TV's standard modus operandi of forcing a show to run as long as it still makes money.  Up until it eventually turns to total shit and everybody stops watching it because you can't tell a narrative story forever with no end in sight.  Then cancel it when its at its very worst.

Mind you, that still doesn't stop it from being one of the best TV series ever made.

Title: Re: The X-Files (2015)
Post by: Teleku on July 20, 2015, 01:23:10 PM
Sure, but when that's how every single show is run in America, it gets old.  I've always been envious of the UK (and Japan) for making so many shows that are just one season.  It was a huge hit!  Great, think of something else now!

Setting a definitive time limit just results in a better overall story.  Open ended is fine when you are just making a totally episodic TV series that only randomly references past episodes like Cheers or Friends.  It falls apart when trying to tell a big coherent story.  BSG probably would have been one of the most perfect series ever if it had just been three seasons (and by that I mean with them knowing they only had one seasons left, they would have done something totally different than they did for season 3  :awesome_for_real:).  Lost being set at 3 seasons also probably would have been good.

I liked Doggett and the woman agent but I knew the show was on its last legs.  Loved the first movie, disappointed in the second.  That trainwreck makes me nervous for the new series.  What a terrible X-File.

It was a no-brainer; make another UFO movie and have M&S hook up.  But no, Chris Carter was too coked up to figure out even that simple plot.  Surprise!  M&S are in bed together!  Wha?  We wanted the courtship and seduction, not skipping past that.  At least that's what I wanted.

Title: Re: The X-Files (2015)
Post by: schild on July 21, 2015, 09:34:05 AM
No, I'm saying the last movie isn't at all indicative of what the new series should be considered. The last movie was just an X-files episode that could have been filler in any random season. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just one of those "barely an X-File" episodes and people wanted something more... grand.

To be honest the best entertainment I got out of the post Second season X files (I think the rot started after the second season) was watching an episode with a Girl who was still a major fan of the show, and the Smoking man had just kidnapped Mulder who was in trouble for some reason. and she said "oh well at least he wont say something stupid like "I am your Father." And then 30 seconds later Smoking man turns to Mulder and says "of course I care. I am your Father." And she literally screamed "NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"  :drill:

I get that same sickly sweet feeling I get when I walk around my undergraduate campus these days. The fond memories come flooding back only to be met with the stark reality that everything is different - same streets and mostly same landmarks, but everything else is askew, just to make everything a bit uncomfortable and foreign.

Now I have to watch while I cry into my blanket wondering where the years have gone.

Nice. I'm glad it looks like they are going to have some regular x-files cases and not just do a miniseries about the alien tech conspiracy thing.

I don't think these will be "regular" x-files cases.  Every epi. will feed into the larger conspiracy, hopefully. I'd rather not the random weirdness like in the original series.  They have plenty of material the way they laid it out in the premiere, so why waste it on filler?

Also, on a personal note, I got kinda choked up watching this (unexpectedly).  When the original x-files was running, I was just a nerd (high-school then college) with dreams of building "spaceships" doing epic science, and finding the truth, etc.  After ST:TNG and so forth, there was the X-Files.  Most every other IP couldn't touch them.  Now?  I'm watching this reboot not far away from where the premiere was located (northwestern, NM) and working at LANL for the Space Division.  It's given me an odd full circle feeling.

I've already got watch parties in the works that I will hold in the Fuller Lodge (where Manhattan Project folk would gather and eat, etc.) next to Oppenheimer's house.  Maybe we'll get some old timers to speak.  Should be kinda creepy, but exhilarating at the same time.

But, how do you know?  How do you really, really know?  :awesome_for_real:

As a negative, the choice of digital HD over film, in this case, was a particularly bad one.  If any sci-fi TV series needed to be shot on film, it's the x-files.  Departing from that was a mistake.  It was like watching "As the World Turns," but aliens.

Title: Re: The X-Files (2016)

Pros:
Gillian Anderson, killing it as Agent Scully. This one thing might make it worth sticking around for the rest of the series.
Flying saucers!
Alien technology, in the hands of our evil government!
Abductions! Alien DNA! Memory wiping!
Walter Skinner  :drill:
Smoking man, smoking through a hole in his neck  :drill:

Cons:
Duchovny looked like he was asleep. This might be a consequence of trying to play a young man's game at age 55. Or maybe he's portraying Mulder as a complex soup of paranoia, exhaustion, depression, and world-weariness. In which case, bravo!
The conspiracy talk was un-subtle at best, and cringe-worthy at worst. I've watched episodes of the X-Files in which they did a much better job of selling this stuff. I wonder what ...

So, I loved this.

I'm not sure why people are complaining about Mulder - he's exactly the same as before. I think there's some viewer memory games at play here.

It feels like a 6 episode pitch to turn it into an actual series again, which is interesting. Six episodes won't even scratch the surface.

It's a good start, but the question is now, "How many will come back at it's normal night/ time?"

Everyone who's interested watches a premiere. The following weeks are more critical.

I agree that Mulder is the same as ever. I wanted to slap him just as hard as before when he was going on about the Key to it all.

IMO The saddest part of this is we'll get no Lone Gunmen.

I think in the intervening years I've lost my tolerance for stupid conspiracy bullshit because this was sooo bad. So bad.

My favorite part was the underlying idea that the American government was going to take over America. Which it, em, currently governs?

The only plausible thing in the entire show was that 'free energy' was being withheld for fossil fuel profiteering. No other reason was given to back up any of the nonsensical claims.

I got the impression that they established Tad as a whack job who happened to be right about this one particular thing. The conspiracy theory was over the top, because lots of it was just mashups with other stuff Tad was peddling.  I thought it was meant to undermine the credibility of the theory so we don't know what parts of it are real.  They've established there is a government agency of some kind that knows about and is developing alien technology. But we don't actually know why or what their end game is.

Also, yes, regarding football, what the hell.  The game was OVER by 10. They cut 20 minutes into the X-Files slot to air a fucking trophy ceremony?

That must be one hell of a faked death as their ghosts were appearing to Mulder in the final episodes of the last season.  Yes I watched them. No you dont want to.

Fact is the Smoking man also was decorated with a Helicopter missile to the face in the final episode, so the fact that he is there alive and well is another no no (as well as the fact he was a long haired, half crazy, dying hippy living in a cave at the time as it was one of the few places safe from the Aliens). And Skully was a true believer in the fact that the Aliens were invading at the end of the Mayan Calander.

Wonder how that worked out.

So if you want continuity errors there are WAY lots of them aside from the fact that the boys are still alive.

Well, I mean, they're tying them together the same way X-Files episodes were lightly tied together. They have a lot more to pack into 6 episodes if they want to tie it up in a bow or have a shot at a full season/seasons. That said, Fringe was a GOOD DEAL like X-Files. Closest show to it, really.

The conspiracy talk was un-subtle at best, and cringe-worthy at worst.

This. I was kind of ok with the whole thing until that big long drawn out back and forth speech with Joel McHale that laid out the conspiracy and I was like

BUUHHH WUUUUUTTTT?

It sounded like it was written by goddamn Alex Jones and that is a terrible terrible thing. That it was nonsensical even by the standards of the X-Files and Chris Carter's usual shitty exposition didn't help. I kept expecting the DNA test to say that Svetlana was their daughter and cringed at the whole implication that Mulder was sleeping with her (maybe that was just me). It felt off. There were some good bits though, enough for me to keep watching. I mean, shit... it's X-Files. I watched both movies and that horrible finale, this was at least better than that last movie.

Title: Re: The X-Files (2016)
Post by: MahrinSkel on January 26, 2016, 10:58:21 AM
I think McHale's shtick was supposed to be hiding in plain sight, he was hooked into real things (like the ARV research team) and he was hiding that behind his P. T. Barnum meets Bill O'Reilly act.

It could have been worse, could have been better. Duchovny's glassy stare doesn't work nearly as well as it used to.

Ya'll jaded and/or don't remember X-Files. This is literally as if they kept writing the 15 missing years and we just didn't get to see the footage. The show hasn't missed a beat. While there's an argument that they should've missed 3-4 beats and jumped a bit forward in a different way, I'm just not seeing these complaints.

Also, Mulder spent full story arcs explaining fucking conspiracies in the original series.

That said, I watched the whole series again last year, so it's all fresh. Maybe you all should also.

Edit: I guess, most importantly, they needed to write this in such a way that these 6 episodes were the true end to the X-files and I suspect they have 2 endings for episode 6 in the bag on the offchance they order a full season+.

You don't have to watch it all. Here's a list (https://www.reddit.com/r/XFiles/comments/33zhcr/the_essential_xfiles_episode_list/) of episodes that are part of the actual story and/or really good episodes. Ofc that's just one person's opinion, there's plenty of other similar lists on the interwebs.

The "actual story" of X-Files was the worst part of the show. It was dull, repetitive and never went anywhere. In many ways it was like the Lost-era tease-with-no-payoff plotting style, before Lost.

The second episode felt really disjointed, like none of the scenes connected together well at all. Lots of "go here because plot demands it" transitions that didn't really make a whole lot of sense. LOL at Scully and Mulder just "happening" to be there when girl shows her tk powers, thus confirming the whole alien DNA thing. Felt like a lot of really lazy writing.

This is not the X-Files I remember.

Did they reboot this series so hard that they shot it in Vancouver? I'm seeing lots of woods and fields and grass, and not so much desert.

The stoners in the cold open are reboots, too. The same actors played essentially the same roles in the original run of the series.

Yeah, that's likely it as much as anything. A lot of time has passed and most of these episodes are feeling really a little too meta. It feels more like the series itself is a person who's having a mid-life existential angst crisis.

The episode with Murray from Flight of the Conchords was really funny though.

I can't get behind the whole Agent Einstein thing.  I don't mind Lauren Ambrose, but the every time they say Agent Einstein, it's like nails on a chalkboard.  What a dumb name to use for a one off quip.

The last half of this mini-series was awful. "Babylon" was one of the worst X-File episodes I can remember. Terrible way to go out as well, whole thing felt terribly rushed with everyone jumping from one odd conclusion to another.

Ohh well, I liked the first 3 episodes.

It felt like they crammed a whole (25 episode) season's worth of overall story arc and "character moments" into the 6 episodes at the cost of the individual episodes (and overall arcs were never really the strong point of x-files in my opinion).  :oh_i_see:

Jesus Christ, that was a colossal, epic failure on every level. That was an entire season's arc in one hour long episode, just randomly flailing from one ridiculous wild ass guess to the next without rhyme or reason. I didn't think Chris Carter could get worse than the first series finale yet he did.

The cabal is apparently run by Jeff Bezos and those libertarian shitheads who want to retreat to Rand Island.
