$400, no DRM on disc-games, $5/month for multiplayer gaming with an account that carries over from the previous system and probably gives you free shit.
It may look like a goddamn brick tripping balls, but Microsoft better like that taste of Sony dick. Because they'll be eating a lot of it. Especially when they realize every XBone they sell gives Sony money for the Blu-Ray license.
How the fuck did I end up cheering for Sony?

Still waiting on microsoft's downfall.mov because that's exactly what it looks like in MS's board room right now.

This just goes to show you exactly how much hubris was involved with the xbox, thinking that they could dictate the market. I'm hoping tonight was a wake up call to someone over at microsoft, but I seriously doubt lessons were learned.

To play devil's advocate, MAYBE Microsoft will have enough clout with publishers to starve the PS4 of games, due to the no-used-game policy. Maybe, uh, the Xbox One will recover from this ultimately by just having better games.
Though fuck, I really don't want that goddamn camera in my home. I've never felt that way about any piece of electronics, ever.
Yeah, they're probably fucked, aren't they.
The funny thing is that I actually think used games should die. I know that'll piss off assorted people around here, but I personally like the bound-to-a-human model of digital sales. Still... somehow Microsoft managed to make their system seem so goddamn hateful that it pissed off even someone who actually WANTS those policies to become the norm. THAT is one hell of a marketing failure.

Sony is calling game publishers (kind of) bluff. There is no way any big developer right now could survive on a single console.

I'm willing to accept the licensed-to-a-user model for digital sales, though that's much easier to swallow with a system like Steam where I can trivially use those licensed-to-me programs on any compatible device, etc. For actual physical media, I think the first sale doctrine should apply. Something I'm really curious about for this generation is the economics... was Microsoft hoping to include some decent margin in xbone, or are they razor-thin or in the red again... or is ps4 (which presumably has a pretty damn similar EBOM) actually cheaper to build or is Sony willing to take a hit at launch to stick it to Microsoft. Also, I'm really curious how much Microsoft's core demographic cares about rental, sharing, or resale -- are they going to take a big hit if they stick to their guns -- and can they, if they decide it was a mistake, back up at this point, or have they already made deals with publishers they can't go back on easily. Interesting times.

The XBone comes with the Kinect, which I think is part of the reason for the higher cost. However, PS4 has twice the amount of RAM. Of course, at the quantity both parties are purchasing it, that may be a negligible difference.

I'm gonna get a PS4 out of general technophilia and for the novelty factor of getting a console day 1. Kinda dumb but there you have it.

I'm expecting PS4 is going to end up with a handful of exclusive content that I'll enjoy (JRPGs or random quirky things), and that combined with upgrading my bluray/dvd/netflix/amazonvideo box (what the PS3 now is) will result in me owning a PS4. Once again I don't see anything at all interesting about Microsoft's offering or titles for it.

MS announcing a Rock Band 4 with import of all my prior Rock Band stuff would get me to buy the Xbone, but that's really all I can think of at the moment.

I guess I am a Sony fanboy this time around. Microsoft really needs to suffer some kind of punitive blowback over these ridiculous decisions they have made.
I am a tiny bit disappointed by the choice Sony is making to require Plus for online play. But only in pricinciple, because as I have said somewhere else recently, Plus is actually a pretty nice value. I beats the ever loving shit out of Live, that is for goddamn sure.
Did they, on the other hand, mention anything about using Netflix and whatnot without Plus?

This will likely be it for me. PS3's exclusives were a lot better than the 360's, and more tended to stay exclusive. It'll probably be the same here.

From what I've been seeing elsewhere, you can use Netflix without Plus.

Yeah, it sounded like the only feature that *required* plus was online gaming -- not any of the media/network stuff like netflix or web browsing or whatnot. I'm guessing they're not going to allow third party servers (it'd be hard to justify requiring plus for games not using Sony backend resources).

Another obvious question which I haven't seen the answer for: Backwards compatibility for the PS4? Anything to speak of?
Less of an issue for me than it would have been for the Bone, partially because my PS3 library is smaller...but also because I know I will still use my PS3 in some capacity. It is still a great Blu Ray player, after all.

There's absolutely no way they could emulate the PS3 architecture on PS4 at speed. Even more impossible than reasonably emulating PS2 on PS3 (which they basically failed at without dedicated hardware assist).

No backwards comparability.
On the plus side - confirmed no region locking either. That's a big thing for us Euros and again a big difference compared to the XBO.
Sons have gone all out with gamer friendly policies & power. Time to see whether that works in their favour or if we gamers are all talk and no action.

Maybe Microsoft is just counting on the younger gamers who are not spending their own money and got into gaming for Madden and dudebro shooters having more brand loyalty or less awareness than you guys give them credit for.

Yeah, I totally do not know anything about the dudebro gamer demographic -- what, if any, price sensitivity they have, how much loyalty they have to their franchises, how much they value rental/sharing/trade, etc. It may well be MSFT has plenty of data on their core demographic that tells them despite the outrage, most of their players will come back for the next generation anyway.
Anecdotally, a number of folks (typically more casual console games) I know have been claiming to move from xbox360 to ps4 as a result of the info announced at E3. I'm seeing "so which console should I buy to keep playing CoD with you guys" threads where people say "ps4", and the like. I don't think most of these folks are xbox core demographic types though, but they are one-console-per-generation types.

Not directly, yes (would be rather hard, due to the switch from Cell to X86 anyway) but Sony already announced that they'll bring PS3 titles to the PS4 via their Game-streaming feature.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown, but I bet there are far more of us "casual" xbox owners than the "dudebro" owners. I can imagine that perhaps the dudebros gave MS the edge last time around, but if people like us are really going to stay away from the Bone in droves, then the Bone is in deep shit. So much deep shit that I think they will be forced to eat crow and reverse their policies, but we shall see.
I bought a day one 360 last generation without a second thought. This time, I will not only not buy a day one, but I intend* not to buy one at all, and buy a PS4 instead. It feels like most of you in this thread are saying something similar (or intend to buy neither console). Almost everything I am seeing on the internet so far is looking the same.
So as of right now, what do you, the unwashed masses of F13, plan to buy, if anything?

I mean, a PS4.
The kinect camera is creepy. And maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, your average dudebro gamer is a college guy. Like, what the fuck are they going to do with a Kinect in a dorm room/shit apartment?

Up until the pricing was announced I was considering getting a PS4.
I am repulsed by what they've shown of the Xbone in pretty much every way imaginable. The pricing model, the lack of exclusives that interest me, the creepy always-on kinect bullshit, the fact that the bulk of its features won't work outside the US, the emphasis on TV & sports, etc. It just has nothing whatsoever that I'm interested in.
The PS4 was initially more appealing. It's more powerful, it has some exclusives that I might want, no region locking, less restrictive and intrusive, etc. But, £349? And PSN Plus required for online gaming? No. And I have to say, it's fucking ugly. I mean seriously. I don't really want that in my living room, it looks like shit.
So I'll be sticking with my PC attached to the TV and keeping an eye on the Steam box. If PS4 prices drop to ~£250 I'll think about it depending on what the games situation for it is by then.

PS4, no doubts about it.
And even if I weren't into Gran Turismo, or Japanese Games, I really can't see much reasons to buy an Xbox. I mea, outside of "faith" in some unannounced surprise or exclusive, does anyone can mention a single reason to buy an Xbox1 instead?
