I managed to register an account.  But the store is down due to server maintenance.  I blame God.

Ack, just when I put up a Hexxit Server too!

What? Where?

I'm getting a minecrafty itch again. I was even considering Crafting Dead.

Though with Cube World and TUG imminent maybe just a folly :)

I'm migrating the server today, IP will change, ill make a post on our site or PM you today about it.

I don't actually understand why the purchasing mechanism for Cube World is still down.

AFAIK, it will not be up until all the people who already bought it are sorted out. Meaning I think the issue issue is a bit deeper than just a web page working.

Apparently he built his own web store.

Which is a brilliant thing smart people do instead of only making $17/copy for two employees and paying someone else to deal with that infrastructure.

(note: I may be slightly bitter and have the auto refreshing "can you buy this yet" page up)

Is this where I assume the creator of Cube World is an idiot manchild that couldn't just, you know, do things in a sane, efficient way?

From what I've been told yes, it's all his own code. He's using paypal as a payment processor, but everything else is his doing. Which is why it's taking so long to fix and broke under pressure (and why they had to take a side trip into making sure people who paid got their download)

It's all pretty silly. Even if he gave a 25% cut to a store he and his wife would be fucking rich right now.

Building a web app around an existing, proven, payment processing system is not exactly rocket science.

Failing to contemplate how you're going to scale with load is a pretty common mistake in this space, sadly, partially because it's pretty hard to test.

Not wanting to introduce more intermediaries between yourself and your users (beyond the payment processor -- you're just nuts if you want to roll your own credit card processing), is not unreasonable.

EDIT: Collapsing under unanticipated initial launch signup/payment/download load happens to projects with $100M budgets and projects with $10K budgets -- it's embarrassing, it gets sorted out, and people move on.  I'm willing to cut a small shop some slack as they get this stuff sorted -- I mean, really, I've seen Google (a company that does infrastructure and scale better than almost any other) product launches stagger under initial loads.

Going to a third party does not guarantee success and involves giving up a lot of control and a possibly significant chunk of revenue.

They should've just used Humble Bundle. Which is absolutely used to this sort of load and allows payment through Paypal and does all of the software hosting. Their cut is hilariously low also.

Or, sure, they can reinvent the wheel as mentioned and we can "cut them some slack."

I know. That was a response to Quinton. I merely used "reinvent the wheel" because that's what they're actually doing.

The fact that this thing is still down gives me pause about the entire thing.  But I'm still probably going to pick up a copy.

Too slow.  Not up for me now.

EDIT:  Hit reload a minute later and it worked.  Let's see if I can get this downloaded and installed.

EDIT2: Site navigation is a bit wonky.  If you can't find your way back to the download page after purchasing, the URL is https://picroma.com/account/games

There's no game music, so I'm playing with the Game of Thrones soundtrack in the background.

Just spent an hour playing.

Very polished for an alpha. Enjoying it a lot! Level 3 undead wizard, starting to get the hang of combat. It's not minecraft! You don't make tools and chop down trees, you find crafting materials in the world and "mine" them by attacking them. I can't work out where to get wood from, it doesn't seem to be from trees! In fact I can't work out a lot of things so far, including how to tame pets. I'm guessing I need food but not worked out any specifics yet.

The style is ridiculously cute.

Going back in to see if I can find a cave or something and try to locate some iron!
