A friend of mine informed me this morning that it's on steam.

I guess... it's been in development for so long I forgot about it?

Wow. I didn't know it was even in development. RO was fun for a bit. Glad to see RO2 is free to play so I can at least pop on and check it out, but it looks suspiciously identical to WoW as far as the graphics go. Blah.

Apparently they forgot how to MMO.

If I can't grief people with random portals to the basement of facerape city then I'm not interested.

My god. Hasn't this been in development / beta for like a decade? I know I was listening to Yoko Kanno's soundtrack two or three jobs ago.

Gave this a few minutes, and I'm not sure what I think about it.

The graphics and music and polish are all definitely there... but so far mechanically it's pretty much a copy of WoW with literally nothing new, and the setting and everything is just so vanilla...  I mean, it's slick and controls well and has a nice feel, but there's just nothing grabbing me.

The controls feel horrible. Almost no customization for them that I could find. It's cute... but meh.

The only thing that game succeeded in doing is making me pine for the "good ole days" where me and a large group of strangers would lead huge hordes of undead around in Glast Heim to aoe them to death, or playing solo slow, dangerous monsters and kiting them very carefully into well placed firewalls.

WoW clone with Ragnarok Online skin. Oh good.

Kind of sad they went away from the isometric view.

I miss farming up for gems so a couple of my friends could drop teleporters on top of the entrances to Pontera that lead to the opposing exit on the opposite side of town. So someone would try to enter the city, hit the teleporter, than end up at the opposite exit. Then they'd turn around, try to go back in, hit my other friend's teleporter and end up back where they were before. People would fall for it over and over and flip out.

Also, when you were trying to sell stuff as a merchant and some jerkass was undercutting everyone in the area, you could call in your priest buddy and drop a teleporter to the basement of Glast Heim on top of them.

Also, just opening teleports to random places in the middle of town and watching like a dozen+ people lemming into them.

Did I mention I was in high school when I played the original?

WoW clone with Ragnarok Online skin. Oh good.

More like WoW clone with WoW skin. This has none of the charm and style of the original RO. I don't know whether or not RO was a good game but it at least looked distinctive and cute. This looks painfully generic.

This is awful.  Not the game so much as the insult to my RO memories.  RO was so adorable.  This is about as generic as it could possibly get these days.  I have a feeling that making generic clones in a time when games are getting more and more realistic and/or creatively special is just a waste of money.

I don't even know what the story is about.  Every once in a while I log in to kill a mob until it drops a card, then move on until I find another mob.  Then I get bored and cut myself.

I feel like I now exist in a world where I can evaluate any "MMO" based on if there is a strong reason to play it instead of Scarlet Blade which works because sexploitation and tits and perfectly functional WoW clone. Somehow that combo of barely playable 1/10th of a game just seems to work well as measuring stick for most of the dreck people are shoveling at the moment.

RO was a soul crushing grind but it was cool and unique and cute and had its own feel to the characters and the world and the gameplay. This thing calling itself RO2 doesn't even come close to passing the Scarlet Blade test.

But it had a card collection system and you have to pay real money to use the card holder so the cards don't take up all your inventory space!!!  What could go wrong?

My roommate played it fanatically.  I gave it about a week before moving in due to the soul crushing grind.  It had a lot of character though, and was a different take on MMOs compared to most of that era.
