I might be more inclined to get it if it was this kind of Ghost.  (SFW)  awesome, for real

Arise!

Is it sad that I'm genuinely interested in this?

Not from a gameplay perspective, as I expect that to be same-shit-different-day. But the worldbuilding aspects of it? Some sort of cataclysmic event knocks the US off the map and we're no longer the big swinging dicks? And written by the guy that did Traffic? I'm in for at least that.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something.  We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

Save yourself the 60 bucks and watch a Let's Play.  I've been doing that with lots of games that I don't really care about gameplay wise and have found it to be a decent alternative.  I just leave it on while I'm doing something else.  Most recent success: The Last of Us

Don't think it's sad - I'm keeping an eye on this as well. I'd love to have a similar experience as I did with Modern Warfare. An janky, spammy easy-to-play fps with tons of customisation and an endless supply of kids to frag. I would probably have picked up one of the latest iterations, but they all seem to have been plagued with a lack of dedicated servers, etc...

Black Ops 1 and 2 both had dedicated servers on PC, and Modern Warfare 3 had a 'custom servers' dedicated server option.

But yeah, the CoD series is now my go-to mindless kill dudes shooter. Always plenty of people to play with.

Seems to be bashed by a lot of mainstream review sites.

'Can't teach old dogs new tricks'
'Too samey. Not like BLOPS II'
'Boring campaign.'

Call of Duty Ghosts receive 5/10> Destructoid
Call of Duty Ghosts receive 3/5> Giant bomb
Call of Duty Ghosts receive 8.8/10> IGN

IGN refuses to grant them the Holy 9+ for some reason. Despite calling it... one of the best CoD to date.

Call of Duty: Ghosts isn't a reinvention of the franchise, but proves there's still room for innovation within its existing formula. Though at the risk of overcomplicating things at times, its robust multiplayer gameplay, surprisingly fun co-op modes, and lengthy, challenging, and varied campaign makes Ghosts one of the best Call of Duty games to date.

Although they do say there is an in-game that can kill people on command.

Yes is cool awesome, for real

Just started playing so can't really comment on how good it is. I would agree, though, with the reviews that say the graphics are nothing special. Extinction mode is fun so far.

That game gets eviscerated by the reviewers.  It's probably really a mediocre game and I'm really not a fan of the whole genre but this smacks of a lot of pent up frustration finally breaking its way.

I think what happened is that Treyarch got better at doing CoD than Infinity Ward especially after the mass exodus of senior IF staff. Most reviews state that there's simply no point in CoD after you've played Black Ops 2. Reviewers also saw Titanfall which is done by the Ex-IF staff and is already hyped to be the next big thing (TM).

The rest seems to be a case of 'what we've secretly been saying about CoD for years but couldn't publicly because sponsors'.

A Call of Duty game, you know, the dudebro shooter that gets a new fucking version every goddamn year, is not innovative or all that new? ZOMG SURPRIZE!!!! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? It's madness! What's next? The yearly version of Madden is nothing more than a reskin and a roster update? GASP AND SWOON, CLUTCH THE PEARLS.

Buncha fucking whores. And I say this as someone who despises the Call of Duty series.

Most of what I'm reading or hearing from reviewers I trust is not so much that it's the same as every CoD game, it's that it's actually a step back from Black Ops II. Some people also commented that it doesn't really feel like a next-gen game although that's not too surprising since they had to expect to do the majority of their sales on current gen systems.

The following video is maybe a spoiler of the ending so don't click if you care about the integrity of CoD's award winning single player campaigns:

My question - is that real or an elaborate prank?  Did they actually reuse that?

That happens in the first five minutes.

The reviews are kinda funny.

Maps too large? COD maps have always been too goddamn small. The dudebros can't shoot fish if they're not in a barrel.

Overly complex? Really? There's one more control feature than before.

The real problem the reviewers are having is that it's not formulaic enough.

Upon further looking at metacritic, I'm actually not really seeing an issue with CoD scores in general. The MW 1 and 2 are both in the 90's but most of the other recent games are in the upper 80's and there's been a steady decline in scores for the last couple games. Black Ops II is lower 80's. The drop here is steeper but the series didn't go from getting 9's and 10's from every outlet on every previous game to getting 7's and 8's here.  Even IGN's scoring is more or less consistent (they scored Black Ops 1 around the same as Ghosts).

Maybe I'm just getting old, but my biggest complaint with Ghosts is the constant frantic pace; more-so than even BLOPS 2.  The dog portions are a nice change up to the game, but everything seems to be "go, go now".   To the point where a mission will fail if you don't follow a teammate quickly enough.  That existed in the previous games, but I felt it was only in "chase" situations.  All of this is single player musings.

Weapons feel fine.  Accuracy, effectiveness, all feels pretty good.  The maps do not feel too large, unless the teams are small, which is exceedingly rare.

Needs a couple of patches to fix a few nagging issues.  Minor frame rate stutters for no good reason, loading hang ups, occasionally a sound stutter at the start of a level/mission.  Nothing game breaking it all, but irritants.

It's like calling shenanigans.  But you say "jihad" instead. - Llava

Make sure you turn on the high resolution texture pack (the "extra" texture settings) on the PC if your GPU can handle it. Those make the game look a lot better.

I really want to buy this, but I'm worried the multiplayer will turn into a hackfest like it did with MW2 for me. Back then the matchmaker took me to some dude's hacked game where a single kill unlocked everything for me. Kinda took the wind out of my sails.
