Is this actually coming out soon now?  I didn't watch the link since I have already watched the trailers that have been released.  This movie was stuck in some weird release date limbo due to legal fighting among the producers/studio/whomever.

edit: Oooo, a new "official" trailer.

I have never played WoW.

I had read somewhere that this movie was having some production problems.  From what I had gathered the production company took over the film and the final say/cut of the whole thing.

I just hope it actually comes out; I'd seen a trailer for this ages ago then nothing.

That looks like utter shit. I bet you Peter Dinklage is preying it never actually comes out and manages to die a quiet death. Yes, Glau looked hot but that's not enough to save that movie. I predict Highlander 2 levels of suck if this movie ever makes it to theaters.

Watched it with some other D&D nerds, everyone pretty much hated it.  It kinda felt like one of those episodes of Law and Order or The X-Files where the writers were told to do a story about video games, but nobody knew anything about video games, so they just had some x-treme gamer dude in sunglasses saying shit like "I'm gonna power up this score points to the MAXIMUM to employ the super jumps" or whatever.  Story made no sense, main character was an unlikeable non-character, the whole romance arc with Summer Glau was so forced it made me wince, and the "badass hero saves the day" sequence at the end felt like unearned wankery.

Movie was bad.  Probably the worst I've voluntarily watched in quite a long time.

What seemingly would be a simple trope to present (larpers gone 'real' to combat evil) was a complete clusterfuck.  There was absolutely no "badass" in the badassdom at all.  Hell, Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors was a better attempt.

Sounds like Unicorn City was a better LARPing movie.  Not that Unicorn City wasn't painful to watch, but painful in a "Yeah, I know that guy" sort of way.

Best LARPer movie is probably Role Models.

It seems like some of you were either surprised or disappointed. I don't know why. That trailer was shit, designed specifically to market to the crowd of people who know what a RenFaire from the billboards they pass on their way to somewhere else. They don't know what LARPing is. They know D&D but only in terms of neckbeards in their Mom's basement. And Lord of the Rings is the movie someone else dragged them to or possibly was nominated for some technical award or maybe that was that James Cameron one?

In short, it was for people who make fun of this, not for people who know it.

The whole idea of this movie was stupid on principal. I couldn't possibly imagine how the movie could be good on any scale in any book.

When I read Kail's post I was reminded of a time my friends and I went to an arcade and they played D&D: Tower of Doom.

My friends were playing with a couple random people (it's a 4 player game) and at one point one of the random people got sort of angry and said "This is stupid! Owlbears don't travel in packs!"

I wouldn't go that far.  Gamers who get to game for real is something that's really not that damned hard to do with today's movie tech.  It just has yet to be done with any real quality but animated.  I mean, we've got plenty of movies that give a bit of facetime to the idea, but never as the central theme.  Not in fantasy, sci-fi, post-modern, none of it.  At best they use the genre to formulate cheeky satires.

Sorry I coulda been clearer. The idea of this movie was to do a low budget point and mock at the gamers, not to be a legitimate movie about gamers gaming. It's sort of the gamer-topic equivalent of how studios handle most non-Trek sci-fi. It's usually less about the sci-fi than it is contemporary people doing contemporary things surrounded either by the set from Mass Effect (if it's a dramedy) or the set from Doom (if it's horror).

I was looking forward to this but unlike the rest of you, I had no expectation it would be good.  Movies don't get stuck in controversies about distribution when they are good.

So, for not expecting a good RPG/LARP movie, I thought it was enjoyable.  It was certainly better than much of the mid-2000s Sci-Fi channel original crap.  It certainly did not deserve to be on a big screen.  Summer Glau mailed it in (and she doesn't even strike me as particularly attractive anymore, really).

BUT, there were some amusing scenes and references.  The head GM did a great job acting like king of the dorks.

I would recommend any D&D fan seeing it.  Watch it with a group so everyone can chip in a few bucks.

I have never played WoW.

I knew I was going to get shit for posting it, but I couldn't resist. I use a lot of demons and devils in my current D&D game, so it struck me immediately.
