Anyone else watching this? It's not nearly as cheesy as I thought it was going to be and the wife even likes it. It may not be entirely historically accurate but I think it is pretty good.

There seems to be a distinct lack of people with viking blood amongst the cast.
Next up, a Finnish/Lithuanian production about IndiansNative Americans in the US, starring three russians, two danes and a guy from Bulgaria dressed up as Sitting Bull.  why so serious?

It's on the History Channel so this statement is redundant.  why so serious?

That would make an awesome Halloween costume!  This year I plan to go as a Swede.  Just to piss off my poor old dead grandfather.  I'm so playfully annoying.

I've done extensive research and I'll have you know that all cultures north and east of Germany love two things; vodka and potatoes.

Going to start watching this.  Get my Norse on yo.

First thing that popped up when I googled "Swede". Good luck.

Blood Eagle; very brutal but strangely solemn (compared to the crucifixion in the episode before)  ACK!

Started watching this on the weekend. I'm now half-way through season two. Historical innacuracies apart, I really like it although the sacrifice scenes in S1 had me cringing. Is it just two seasons or will there be a third?

There will be a third season. I enjoy the show as well, it is entertaining. Just when I start to think the show is predictable, it does something a little different.

Awesome. Just finished season 2 - loved the final episode, I wasn't really expecting it to pan out that way. Nobody messes with Lagertha and Floki is so damn unpredictable - or not.

I hate to say it, I prefer Vikings to Game of Thrones. There just seems to be more balanced acting and writing depth to it even if it is slower paced.

As for the blood eagle episode - ouch.

Just had to pop in and say:  really liking this show.  The cinematography is excellent for a historical piece, and the camera work and lighting seems very well done.

The credits list three historical advisors on staff, and most of the complaints seem like nitpicking to me (e.g. the wrong period helmets on the Saxons, etc).  One interesting complaint I read is that the show depicts Vikings as extensively using shield walls, which is apparently accurate.  However the technique was well known in England and France at the time (and known even to the Romans before), so it would have been unlikely that the English troops in Season 1 would have tried to breach one without forming one themselves (as shown in Season 2 with all of the Viking on Viking conflicts, which are essentially just shoving matches between shield lines).

All in all however, extremely well done.

S3E1 was great - just enough pace followed by a bout of violence to remind the audience that it's not a love story. I'm replacing Walking Dead and GoT with this as my anticip-ation TV show (alongside Archer)

Agree. Binge-watched Season 2 because somehow we missed it when it was on.  This has replaced Walking Dead for me in terms of anticipation of next episodes (although Justified is still up there for me too).

Is this show a histo-documentary or histo-fiction like Spartacus?

Like Spartacus.  Many of the people are real historical figures, and if you know history, you know how this is all going to end, just like in Spartacus.  Everything in between is fun make believe.

I'd just add, its not like Spartacus in that its more 'realistic', whereas Spartacus' violence was deliberately stylised 300ish and over the top.  Vikings is more realisitic in its depiction of violence.

The finale was a bit anti-climatic, kind of a weird episode.

The 8th episode was definitely the highlight of the season, basically an hour straight of warfare, but not boring like some of these film/tv fights get, not just prolonged scenes of cuts to guys just hacking endlessly. One of the best depictions of a siege I've ever watched on film/tv, didn't have the budget of a blockbuster, so involved less extras than possible (although it is portraying a relatively small event, but just something steadier about it with the extra time they had, not rushed with bang bang CGI over the top moments, catapults having the effect of 155mm howitzers or some protagonist doing something ridiculous thing to single handedly win it.

Agreed on all points.

My spouse thought there must be another hour to watch of the finale because of how it ended.

I like this show very much. Looking forward to the next season.

So this turned out to be a little bit of an understatement, as I've finally got around to watching seasons 1 and 2.

It's really good.  Normally not worth bumping a thread this old, but I seem to complain a lot about bad TV, Movies and books, so it's nice to find something that works for me.

So far I have not been liking S4 too much. I feel like the show has really gotten bogged down in too many plotlines at this point and half of them are just very secondary character development or too philosophical. The show is supposed to be about vikings kicking ass so why am I spending what feels like most of an episode watching an English Princess' journey of self discovery?? Or the emotional tribulations of Ragnar's bitchy wife? The whole Paris storyline is kind of weak but at least Rollo is there holding it up. Ragnar spending whole episodes on a heroin trip and spazzing out isn't so compelling either.

At least a bunch of these seem to be coming together for the finale, hopefully they can chop a few and tighten things up again. .

I have to agree that S4 has been a disappointment so far. Too much time spent in England and France (with other than the vikings) and mixing up a
really make the plot far too convoluted.

Hopefully they'll wrap most of this soon (before the start of the next season) and maybe dedicate S5 to Ragnar's son(s) trip to Mediterranean

Hopefully that was a way to close up another loose storyline thread by waving away 2 extraneous characters since that kind of thing can take years. So goodbye until season 7 or 8.

Final episode and damn it was good, especially the timeskip with the rise of the next generation. Bjorn was awesome throughout.

Seems like I'm getting what I wanted next season (Ragnar's son(s) going to Mediterranean)  DRILLING AND MANLINESS

Now if they could keep the other plotlines to minimum I'd be even happier. Ohhhhh, I see.

I think it's time for a break from France. England will be good if it's Ragnar and his sons and the Great Heathen Army. Stuff the rest - I can watch The Last Kingdom for that side of it.

Bjorn and Floki is a great combo for the Med... and Helga. There looks to be some interesting things happening at home too although it might deviate from the loose history surrounding Aslaug

I thought this season was the weakest of them all. I hope that season 5 recovers.

Good finish to the character's development - Ivar, Ubbe and Bjorn look set to take the series on but I'm not sure it will ever be as strong as S1/S2

Bjorn and the blood eagle - I think his brothers were enjoying it more.

I think the actors that play Ubbe and Ivar are going to carry the next season nicely and the guy that plays Aethlwulf (sp?) is just great value.
