Make me a Talespin game and I'm in.

Quote from: wikipedia
Three different TaleSpin video games were produced. One was a scrolling shooting game developed by Capcom for the NES and Game Boy. The other two were platform games, one developed by Sega for the Sega Genesis and Game Gear, and the other developed by NEC for the TurboGrafx-16.[25] A PC video game is currently being developed by fans, and a prototype version has been released on January 2012. The final game will be an adventure point & click with platform and shoot'em up levels.[26]

He's right.  I've seen much weirder shit, but not of that vintage.

The other thing I've got going on this side of my keyboard is that I not only missed Duck Tales, I'm not sure I have ever heard of it.  If I have, it wasn't anything like "internet neckbeards give seven thumbs up" like what I'm seeing here; maybe an ad on TV at best.  So the weirdest part for me is (in my mind) a random licensed game from 1989 having a highly-anticipated remake in 2013, as well as a cult following complete with proto-4chan video.

I am right with you. I didn't even know this game existed, so I'm highly dubious that people keep telling me that it was one of the most popular platformers of all time.

At least in my area, the game was pretty popular when it came out.  Of course I was 10 at the time so I was more or less in the right age bracket.  Obviously I wouldn't have known it at the time, but a lot of the people that worked on this game are the same people that did the Mega Man games.

I remember liking it when it came out, as did most of my friends, but we were all 6 or 7 and loved the cartoon as well.

Still wondering how they did the market research in this. I'm pretty sure the last decade, not a single minute was spent by gamers saying 'We need a HD remake of Ducktales platformer.'

Hell, with Ubisoft going blobber Might & Magic X - I guess nothing surprises me anymore. Perhaps there will be a TMNT HD soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if WayForward approached Capcom with the idea.  These are the same guys that did the A Boy and His Blob (an even more obscure NES game than DuckTales) for the Wii because the director was a fan of the original.  Seems like they do a lot of work with other companies franchises, like their recent Double Dragon Neon.

Duck Tales was pretty popular and a lot of people have fond memories of it. That said this is clearly not driven by market forces and customer demand.

I don't see this as a bad thing. If the game industry followed "customer demands" to the letter we would get no new games other than Call of Duty/Battlefield/TheSims/EASportgame<insertyear> sequels.

I agree.

Personally I find it kind of annoying when people mix game criticism with "but will it sell?" talk. (Not accusing anyone here of doing that, just something I see around a lot) As a consumer I care if the thing seems cool, not why it is being done or whether it will succeed financially.

In addition a lot of things that do well are things people didn't know they wanted in advance.

That said for the trailer I would have used remixed NES music rather than the cartoon theme. If I have nostalgia for Duck Tales the game it's because the game was actually really good, not because I love Duck Tales the IP.

Also fuck market research. Market research in gaming is usually a great example of total misuse of data. I'm sure market research showed that "Fracture" was going to sell 10,000x more than Minecraft or Mario Kart.

I'll buy this as long as the price isn't too high.  I don't pay top dollar for nostalgia.

Ducktales held up better than Mega Man 2 (but not 3).

Edit: I would put this as one of the best games Capcom ever made. Seriously. Up there with Magic Sword, MM3, the myriad of exemplary Street Fighter Titles, etc.

I'm curious why you have Mega Man 3 there. I agree with you, actually, but I seriously would like to know the why of it, since I can't really explain it beyond a kind of gut feeling.

This whole thread...not sure if serious?  I may have been a little older than the average target audience, but I watched it a bit when I was a kid.  When I clicked the link and the music started playing, I knew exactly 100% of the words.

That said, I never knew such a game ever existed, much less that it may have been worth anything.  How fascinating.

DuckTales was the epitome of NES licensed games next to the first Batman NES game (which also owned). Good music, pretty good level design, pretty decent graphics, some memorable bits.

Arguable the best platformer made on the Amiga, let alone licensed game.

I'm with you two old farts. I was old enough when Duck Tales came out that I didn't give a shit about the show, and I didn't have an NES so my knowledge of games on that system are secondhand.

Oh no, I gave a shit about the show.  I watched it, Darkwing Duck, Freakazoid, Animaniacs.  Hell, I still watch Cartoons. Love 'em more than most scripted shows because they don't take themselves seriously but can say some 'serious' things.  I just don't recall the game being all that good.

Make me a Talespin game and I'm in.

As Rasix pointed out, they did.

Batman really was the shit wasn't it.  Terrible gameplay from a modern perspective.  (You could just sit in one spot punching while mobs ran at you until you got the powerup you wanted) but damn if it wasn't fun.

I still love cartoons. I just didn't give a shit about this one. Disney cartoons outside of Animaniacs were too kiddy for me. Animaniacs fucking OWNED though. That show did stuff that had more subtlety than most adult comedies these days.

Mega Man 2 had the following on Mega Man 3: Better Music, almost.

Mega Man 3 felt like a world. The bosses belonged there. The level design was basically the best in the series until Mega Man X - but Mega Man X had some different goofy problems that Mega Man 3 didn't have (like forcing you to push the controls to the extreme, which some people like but I don't care for it). At no point did the difficulty of Mega Man 3 ever make a drastic shift like it does in the first area in Wiley's Castle in 2. Mega Man 3 introduced Proto Man, who has one of the most memorable and perfect scores ever put into a game to invoke a feeling of narrative pre-voice acting. The entire game is just Capcom saying "We have mastered the platformer. Next."

Mega Man 3 had Proto Man and Rush.

Mega Man 4 had the charge shot. It was also a total piece of shit.
