Somewhat cliche but looks like it could be fun.

Damn, I thought this was an ME movie (TIM's real name).
Doesn't look terrible, just kind of generic.

Eh, actually looks like it might be good. I'm afraid they already gave away to much ('the twist') in the trailer, however. They really need to stop doing that shit.

Thank god Tom Cruise is involved. I might have gone to see that movie otherwise.
And yes, whats up with spoilering plot twists? That is not cool.

Doesn't look terrible except for Cruise, but nothing in the trailer gave me any desire to go see it. As pointed out already I'm pretty sure I could give the entire story start to finish anyways from the trailers.

Had the same reaction--I was like, Hm, could be good, no wai there is too much Cruiseness all over this. I really just have a visceral reaction to that guy now, can't help it.

I assume its like the plot to WALLE only with Tom Cruise.

I can't stand Tom Cruise but I wouldn't say he's wooden. He's no Keanu Reeves, that's for sure.

Won;t this film mean Cruise plays 2 different characters named Jack less than 6 months apart? (Jack Reacher and this). You think a guy with his own production company could pick any name he wants. He must like Jack.

I didn't say wooden, just programmed. I dunno, Cruise just hasn't really done much interesting acting-wise in a long.. long time.

Last thing he did interesting was Collateral. That said, I'm willing to look past him for the Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman's Morpheus.

Looks quite decent. Cruise is good at playing cool-looking action heroes, hence he suits the movie well.

Just saw this. Was worth resurrecting this thread. This was a very good movie. It's hard to gush in a fanboi way about it, but this one had me thinking a lot more after the movie than any other movie in recent memory (and most books and certainly all games). Kind of a mix of Minority Report, Moon and 2001, but Hollywood'd up with enough action to continue marketing Tom Cruise as a good action movie guy, and enough long shots to make seeing it in IMAX worth it.
This movie seems like an out-of-nowhere standalone. I don't think it's based on anything but a clever screenplay, like not some reimagined 60s drama or some book I never heard of.
Very worth seeing.

The wife hated it.
I thought it was the most beautifully shot post-apocalyptic movie I'd ever seen. All the outdoor shots are absolutely breathtaking.
The story itself is full of a bunch of cliched tropes, but it's told well and keeps you going for most of it. If they had cut maybe 15 minutes out of it, it would've seemed the right length for me.
If you do see it, take Darniaq's advice and see it in IMAX. Like I said, it's gorgeous.

Definitely a gorgeous movie, but pretty cliched. I hadn't pieced everything together, but nothing occurred in this movie that took me by surprise.

Yea all that's true. The one surprise for me was how well put together it was. But then, Fifth Element is in my top 5 and Die Hard is near the top, both so full of tropes they might as well just spliced together the 80s. So yea, I'm easily amused

The movie was good, but yeah, recycled every sci-fi cliche in the book. Tom Cruise's very flat acting did nothing to help it, either. At no point in time did I ever particularly care about Jack. A better actor in that role could've made a world of improvement. Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon, for example, would have pushed this from a decent movie to a great one.

This can be applied to pretty much any Tom Cruise movie outside of Tropic Thunder.

You call it an accident. I call it justice.

I can't see who else could have played Maverick though. The homosexual overtones during the volleyball scene for example could really only be pulled off by Cruise.

I thought Cruise's portrayal was apropo given the material:
Anyways, the movie is a sleeper. Better than Prometheus I thought, as did others that saw it. I also liked it better than Moon.

This movie was horrible. 20 minutes of awesome injected with 100 minutes of tired cliches, constipated looks, and drawn out bullshit. Not even Jaime Lannister made it good. I normally like (or reasonably tolerate) Tom Cruise movies, despite not liking him at all as a person, but this movie was shit.

Just watched it. I disagree with Bzalthek's assessment, though I understand where it comes from. It wasn't perfect; it was a bit too long, had somewhat wooden acting, and yea it was full of tropes. All that being said, I really enjoyed it. Stunningly beautiful movie from a visual point. Best of all though, it was (to me at least) a legit sci-fi movie. Just enough action to keep it from getting boring, but really, a sci-fi love story.
Yes, they went for a sappy happy ending, but I appreciated that they made a point of setting it up properly. It was predictable, but well explained. Sometimes I like my movies to have a happy ending. Biggest surprise for me though would be that the script was well written enough, that I didn't walk away from it wondering about any massive plot holes. A very rare thing these days when it comes to sci-fi. Promethius, I'm looking at you...

Tom Cruise is not Sam Rockwell.
Oblivion is not Moon.
You should watch Moon instead of this completely telegraphed crap.

Definitely a sleeper. A good sci-fi film that blows Promethus and Elysium out of the water. Striking visuals, decent acting and a mystery story that unfolds nicely. Cruise WAS a little flat though and they might have trimmed a few minutes from it. I hate that my movie-going dollars went to Promethus instead of this.
But seriously, how many movies has Tom Cruise played a character named Jack? Is that the Scientology code word that forces him to accept a role? He was Jack in Jack Reacher and I think Jack in Legend. Fake edit: OK he's only been Jack in Oblivion, Jack Reacher and Legend. He was Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages which I'm totally counting though.

Watched it last night. Completely disagree with you, every single thing was televised for the plot, I'm quite sure I have seen this movie before. Morgan Freeman earned a freckle. The love scenes were terrible and too frequent. It was pretty, and it was sifi, nearly Heinlein. But completely forgettable and completely standard scenes from beginning to end.
