It says something that though I play now and again I have not gone near an engineer nor have I even looked at how you see a Thargoid.

Engineering as I started reading about how to do it and got completely lost, and I never have bothered to go past that first impression as I dont see why its worth the dice roll I;ve heard you get a dice roll at the end. Fuck stupid casino grinding.

And Thargoids as I dont need more reasons to be reminded how much I suck.

They changed engineering. It's definitely still a materials grind, but it's not as much of a dice roll now. You want to min/max, you can, just by grinding to unlock the engineers and grinding to obtain the materials. Luck factor was mostly taken out of it. Not that I think it's fun.

I'm going to go further ;  Engineering is fun and relatively easy to get the mats these days.

What ISN'T is the grind to unlock the engineers.  That's still all kinds of bullshit.

I just re-installed this for some VR fun.  I also reset everything, because I don't remember what the fuck I am doing with anything.  It says a lot that I have played this game for 50 hours in virtual reality, and have only barely scratched the surface.  I have literally no idea what any of you are talking about.  I will be spending the next 10 hours of play time getting my controls figured out (extra important when you cannot actually see your keyboard IRL) and figuring out how to make the HUD green instead of that ghastly orange.

If any VR owning readers out there have not tried E:D, you are missing out.  Just tooling around star systems is something else.

Elite: Dangerous is 76% off at Steam right now.

Cheapest it has ever been, if you've ever thought about buying it. Get the the Commander Deluxe Edition for the game as it is meant to be played.

If I already have the vanilla base game, is it the Horizons pack alone that gives all the extra content?

Yes. They called Horizons a season pass, but it turned into a massive ongoing expansion. It's all-in-one. The only other things you can spend $ on are ship paint jobs, ship kits, flight suits, bobbleheads, etc. But those are from the Frontier Store, not Steam.

I was finding that everything was prettier, faster and more responsive last night.

I was tired, so I didn't get the chance to do a lot of scanning or mining, but that's the duty for tonight...

I'm also fucked off now that everything you do in the game seems to need the detailed surface scanner.  Which is a 1 slot that you probably have to put somewhere NOT 1, just like the cunting docking computer.

Fuck this game.

Anyone else signed up for Distant Worlds 2?

Massive expedition with about 5000 players taking part so far, starting January 13. Player-driven content, but backed by Frontier. Out to Beagle Point via Sag A, then back home via the USS Voyager route, but visiting POIs along the way. The account you use for this will be tied up with it for an initial 20 weeks plus the voyage home. I think this event will dominate the Elite: Dangerous news cycle during that time, unless Frontier launches an expansion.

You can sign up here. Save your sign-up URL as instructed, so that you can go back to it and  change details later.

I've signed up with my Asp Explorer, in just an "explorer" role. Now to find the time to log in and get a Guardian FSD booster before January...

Mining Tutorial.

But, servers are crashing since yesterday, and because of the holidays it's not getting fixed very fast.  The 75% discount increased their playerbase a lot, and they haven't upgraded the servers yet.  Also, they moved the asteroids and the mission boards to global servers, and those servers are getting pounded.

In any case, right now everyone is abusing a bug, where if you install 4 abrasion blasters instead of 1, and manage to make all 4 shots land at the same time (by being very near and right above each node), you get 4 Void Opals per node instead of 1.  So normally an asteroid gives 20-30 opals, with this it gives 50-75.

Anyway, track where to sell with Inara.

What. The. Fuck.

That's that's turned a fairly relaxing activity that you can listen to a podcast and chill doing a fairly uncomplicated task, into several layers of complete bollox. Why complicate mining ffs? That only appeals to "elitist" scum that will probably run bots anyway.

I really feel like they are tinkering around the edges and bollixing up inconsequential stuff at this point, rather than doing something sumstantial

Well, here's the thing :

The actual Core Mining is fun and exciting.  It literally adds an element to mining that should have been there from the start.  You can still do the relaxing thing if you want, but you're not forced to.  The Core Mining is also quite profitable.

However :

The Drill Mining is a complete fucking waste of time and neither more profitable nor more fun than normal mining.  It's a waste and I'm not sure what they were thinking there.

So, having core mining and normal mining makes sense to me, but where they've also fucked it up is in the implementation, to wit, they made core mining so hugely stupidly profitable that there was an immediate rush on it which in turn forced it back into the box of 'Wait, this is fucking stupid because everyone's mined all the cores and now we can't find any and I hate this fucking game'

Also, the new scanning is just way too fucking complicated and frankly them putting in 3 or 4 new paragraphs of controls in the game that, by the way, won't implement if you have a custom control system is FUCKING STUPID.  It took me way too long to realise that all the new stuff I couldn't access was because I literally had no way of controlling it until I went in and spent about an hour putting in new keybindings.

Also, the new mining and scanning has once again thrown into sharp relief the fact that all the ships are mostly the same because the 'hardpoint' system in the game is just fuck stupid.  Especially for miners now who have to have a fair bit of stuff, or choose ONE mining setup.

But hey ho.

I mined a bit when I played more than I do now. Was ok, but kinda boring and pretty superficial. Always felt like they just tacked it on. This... well this has me curious.

'Wait, this is fucking stupid because everyone's mined all the cores and now we can't find any and I hate this fucking game.'

I think the aim was to eventually deplete the "bubble of civilization" of cores, and force people to eventually explore outside the bubble to find pristine belts.

EDDB shows 600 pristine + 2000 major ice belts within the bubble, and similar numbers for rocky and metallic (it's not just Void Opals and LT Diamonds that sell; you can also get 1M for Benitoite, Serendibite, Grandidierite, etc., from non-ice belts).  It'll take quite some time for the player base to deplete these roids, and it's more likely that the high priced market orders will vanish from stations before we deplete.

But in any case, the Bubble is small, 20,000 stars, 150 LY diameter.  The galaxy has billions of stars, and IMO exploration-based resource finding is a better way of doing it than having everything listed in a searchable database.  Belts in the bubble will still have thousands of asteroids that are mineable the old way, but the high-profit stuff will eventually involve flying out of the bubble, some 500-1000 LY (not even far) and bringing your load back in.

I slapped mining gear on my cutter. I flew 10k out. I found a good void opal hotspot on an unscanned, undiscovered planet. I joined 512 tons of core. I scanned planets on the way out and on the way in. I got a billion. It was the most satisfying of gameplay loops.

Newbie jumps in an Adder (800k to fit for mining), gets 8T cargo full from 1 asteroid, makes 10 million.  Buys DBX (fitted at 5 million), gets another asteroid, makes 20 million.  Buys AspX (fitted at 10 million, 96T cargo space), gets 6 asteroids, makes 100 million (per hour).

It's pretty awesome for all the new people they got with their recent holidays price reduction of 75% off.

Finally found an extremely nice and full Void Crystals spawn and took a full hold of Python back to sell.

I bought a Mamba with the proceeds, made it A rated all over, engineered it, took it into combat, only to find it truly, truly sucks as a ship.

It's fucking awful chaps, please God, do avoid this ship.  Sure, it looks the baws, but it's AWFUL.

Yup, they over-nerfed it, and the wrong way.  People were asking for a "just slightly less agile than FDL and slightly faster" and they made it super-fast, then less fast and unable to corner at all.

Fortunately, it has the EXACT same critical internals (power plant, etc.) as the Fer De Lance, so get a FDL, transfer all your engineered parts to it, and sell the Mamba.

I already had a Fer De Lance though.   awesome, for real

I dunno, I'm still just casting about for a ship that's somehow fun and different.  I love my Cutter and I have two Pythons and both the DBX and ASP sit in the garage, but beyond that the four or so other ships I have just rot there because they're boring and samey.

They really need to DO something about that.

Scanning in exploration is now so much better that it's ridiculous.  Jump to new system, throttle down in witch space.  Honk system and jump to the scanner.  Spend a couple of minutes scanning every body instead of having to fly at them, possibly getting trapped in their gravity well.  Any interesting/lucrative planets can get surface mapped for even more money.

I just got back from taking a passenger to Sag A.  I only surface scanned metal rich, water worlds, earth like planets, or gas giants with some type of life on the way to Sag A.  I just ran and honked on the way back, and my payday was around half a billion.  Exploration is stupid lucrative now!

I heard that about the Mamba.  Disappointing, because she's a sexy bitch.  I used my recent bonanza to fully A rate a Krait Mk II, and really enjoy it.  I want the pinnacle of firepower, but really fucking hate flying an Anaconda.  I just refit mine for mining (which I haven't really done much of).  Is it worth grinding Fed rank to get the corvette?  I'm almost at Lieutenant Commander right now, and am just dreading grinding out data missions for rank.

My favorite ship has been without a doubt the Asp Explorer.  Just a phenomenal little workhorse.  Fast enough, super nimble and more than enough jump range for just about anything.  I never fitted it for combat, but I bet it would do just fine for it's class.

My only elite status is in exploration, and I did almost all of it in the Asp X.  The conda can jump further, but its like flying aType 9.  Fuck that.

AspX is a favorite for mining, too; has all the slots and just enough cargo that you don't spend too long in the belts..  1 Bil (625 Void Opals, about 42 asteroids) would get you Elite in Trading too.
