It's been down for at least a few hours here, it seems.

Update: Our data center's uninterruptible power supplies experienced a power failure. The power is back on now and we're working to get service restored as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Yeah, a friend of mine (who, incidentally, takes every opportunity to whine about how they've structured everything wrong whenever there's even a hint of a problem, when he's more a developer than a sysadmin) did not see that as a joke on their part. "well, that's a dumbass name!" etc.

I just saw that, smirked, and actually thought higher of them because they don't seem to be taking themselves so seriously they can't flip a joke (albeit maybe a dry one) when shit does go a bit tits up.

I've lived through data center power outages and I can see that being serious, if oddly worded.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Like i have said, I have been having issues, like friends list not populating, but then seeing them log into a game. For about a month now. I think this power outage is just the most noticeable issue.

Well, they are actually called that. That's what the U in UPS stands for. So, may not have been a joke. Also if your datacenter UPS goes out, that is some serious shit right there. That stuff is supposed to be bulletproof.

I know they're called that, I'm just used to people just saying "the UPS", so I figured it was just their way of making it into a tiny joke.

Typically you do have this, in the form of a diesel generator (or some other emergency power source) that kicks in if the UPS system loses grid power. What it sounds like is that their actual UPS installation totally failed, which is kind of scary because if they're doing it right there should be enough capacity/redundancy to make failures like that vanishingly unlikely.

Probably a transfer switch failure when grid power was lost. If the transfer switch fails you are stuck on batteries until they run out.

Or rats ate the generator cables, that happened to us. (Luckily spotted before we needed to go to generator.)
