I really should have done the third ascendancy before Kitava. This build is so damn squishy now.

Balancing resists is an art.

You need some two tone boots ?  I find resists on them and you're probably well on the way.

Ok, this one makes me really happy:

Fractured Items
Can now drop from any Memory, not just from Memories that are currently decaying. We have also increased the average number of Fractured Mods that drop from reward chests.

I actually like the fractured item slotmachine, but hate running decaying memories.

Overall, these changes feel like they might be enough to keep me interested.

Spark inquisitor was annoying. No idea how that build is supposed to stay alive.

Started a trap saboteur. This is fun, and due to my first character, I was able to do some decent twinking. Tabula Rasa is really nice. Additionally, this build isn't super expensive at all. Some of uniques you can use aren't more than a couple chaos.

This game is great at not making me spend money on other stuff. I just wish the cosmetics weren't the price of a special edition Ubisoft game. All my characters look like they dressed themselves in whatever they could find in thrift shop trashcan.

Spark Inquisitor needs good resist gear and needs to keep moving.  When I had mine, he was quite powerful, but I never got all the enchants to make him Uber.

Arc Trap Sab is still one of the best builds in the game.  So overpowered it's not real.

Finally beat eternal lab. Had to rejigger some gear and put more health, run different auras, and get the right mysterious shrine to either avoid a derp death to traps or getting one shot by Izaro. This tri-trap works pretty well, but rotating traps and dealing with Elemental Equilibrium is not great. Still, after getting my last points in Ascendency, this character has kicked it into another gear. My only death afterwards has been because I had no idea what was going to happen in that tier 10 unique map.

Going to try one of these winter orb builds. They are expensive. It's kind of annoying when some of these builds don't have a "get this shit until you can start drop exalts",

I played Marauder to 91 and I still have no real understanding/desire to care about the Synthesis mechanics/mini game. I had planned to start another character as I haven't played them all through, just witch and marauder but I've lost interest. Not a good sign as D3 held my attention more.

It's a good journey but the endgame in PoE just sucks - cartographer just isn't as much fun as D3's rifts. Not that rifts are much to write home about, but there is at least a sense of achievement.

Synthesis didn't grab me at all, I started reading a post about how to craft with it, and decided it was spergers only, and fired up Grim Dawn instead.

Synthesis is/was shit. I quit a week in.

I also think the end game mapping is a shitty mechanic. People who enjoy it like bad things.

Hit level 88 on my EE trapper. I think eventually, this character may struggle and probably would have been better as CI build. Overall time to kill is just too slow so bosses will eventually chaos damage your ass down. Still, it's not bad, I can do every map I've tried thus far. Dying completely sucks, however, and this guy gets popped by Betrayal mechanics and any difficult boss rather easily.

This is only my second real league. I started in Abyss(?) but quit at like level 20 for whatever reason. Did a Vortex/Cold Snap CI witch in Betrayal. That was a fun build, but Betrayal was a pile of moldy ass. Synthesis has been better for me due to the fact that it's mostly ignorable. I don't understand crafting yet, but at least it's not leaping in my face with encounters that I cannot avoid. I still feel like I'm just learning the game: build mechanics are becoming clearer but all of the meta shit still seems beyond my reach at the moment.

Any fun/meta builds to try? I'm not sure that I'll put more time into the the Spark Inquisitor (didn't like) or Winter Orb Elementalist (eh, it's kinda lame). I want to try something out, partially because this trapper is going to get limited by currency and I'm not good at making cash yet.

This is my go to build - lots of fun and mindless.
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2211489

Admittedly I focused on him only and had 5 Ex drop this season so I was able to pick up some tasty gear.

Ex drops seem to have increased dramatically and the rate of chaos as well. I struggled to upgrade my armour though.

I tried a homebrew Trickster build using lightning damage (Storm Burst), ES, Evasion.  I'm 88 and kinda plateau on this guy as I got hybridized away from all in on physical to elemental (extra as chaos too) which is where all the juicy DPS numbers come from.  Or just using / going all Divine Ire, but it's a fun build and okay for farming currency.  I learned a lot from leveling this build and Trickster has a lot of strong choices for ascendancy skills.

I've had a couple EX drop along with some pricey uniques, so I decided to try a couple of builds out. I scrapped the Winter Orb build. It's not that fun and the early single target DPS is egregiously slow.

First up was a tornado shot raider with windripper. The single target DPS is pretty awful even if you bring in barrage. Pretty damn squishy too. You mostly rely on your sonic the hedgehog level speed and just hope nothing gets through your evasion. This was going to be too expensive to get to a good point. I may scrap it and sell the gear. Eventually this was going to be a MF/quant build, but it would have taken a lot of work to get to the point where I could work it in. It's pretty bad when two of the core items go for around 70ex. Plus you need a couple hundred chaos invested in abyssal jewels. It's fun and impressive when it works, but it's really shitty when it struggles. You plink at bosses and then get one shot out of nowhere.

Next up is a soulrend trickster. It's fun so far and it really doesn't take that much to bring it online. I suppose it could go CI, but I think with essence drain, this will be viable as a life build. Plus, this melts bosses, which has been a major complaint of how some of the previous builds I've tried have gone. DoT bases is a plus, I loved playing witchdoctors in D3.

Soulrend Trickster is now 86. I can pretty much do any content I've tried except for some stupidly hard combos in corrupted tier 13+ maps.

The "Core" map is pretty fucking dumb. Doubly dumb when you've got perma Temporal Chains. Not being able to move with slow ass cast speed makes it difficult in the Super Bowl encounter of weirdly colored AoE. Hell, I didn't even think I was doing that map but the corruption changed the entire map to something else.

Next up is some sort of Molten Strike Juggernaut. Maybe I'll try to figure out crafting.  awesome, for real

I basically played this league for a week.

Post lvl 85 exp is a bit brutal. Dying is not an option. Finally hit 90.

I still really suck at bosses. Minotaur kind of kicked my ass as I don't think my defensive setup is that great. Improvements I can get gear wise start at around 3ex.  Sad Panda

Obligatory new league announcement: https://www.pathofexile.com/legion

Mechanics look like Breach turned up to 11, which is a pretty safe choice on GGG's part, considering that's probably been their most beloved league.

Major focus on melee, and trying to de-sloggify how it feels. Being able to interrupt your attack animations in order to dodge, instant speed on all movement skills, melee attacks can hit adjacent critters by default..

It'll be a game changer, we'll see if they can get it right. Every league I try a melee toon, and each time end up focusing on a ranged or caster because melee feels so slow and limited toward endgame.

I don't disagree, but I don't think that's fixable in a meta where any build that can't delete blue packs in less than a second is shit tier. It's hard to emphasize an individual sword swing when all our characters are expected to be walking cataclysms.

You could buff Glacial Hammer or Frenzy (as they exist now) to do literally infinite damage and they still wouldn't be good enough for the highest-end builds. Having auto-cast chain reaction laser beam explosions attached to everything is just the world we live in now.

True, but going from "melee plays like ass" to "melee is fun but not as fast as ranged/caster builds" is still an improvement.

I don't like playing melee in ARPGs. Too much clicking. Too many actions before something dies. Too easy to get one shot if you're lazy, and I am lazy. Even when I played a barb in D3, it was leap/quake (welcome to the jam). I love that in PoE I can spec toward something that is more positioning and heavy hitting rather than getting up in something's face and smackin' some buttons.

The league looks fun. It's hard to be worse than Betrayal (HELLO ONE SHOTS) and Synthesis. I'm glad this one isn't just straight pandering to end game crafting. I may even try the melee, although it will likely just be cyclone build where I can hold down a button and spin to win. Is there a "press button and screen explodes" build I should try?

Tangentially, they need to retire Betrayal. It sucks. The content is bad. It doesn't scale well at any level. And it sure isn't fun when your build can't deal with the surprise butt-reaming. Those mobs will follow you into the map's arena. I'd rather have Synthesis stay than Betrayal. I can ignore Synthesis pretty easy.
