It was announced just a few moments ago that the beta client from this weekend is planned to be patched to early-access/live code. Save yourself having to redownload 30GB of data!

https://twitter.com/#!/rockjaw/status/141535439839436801

FAQ: if you played this weekend you do NOT need to uninstall the #SWTOR client. We are planning to patch it to Early Game Access / Live.

you mean like every other MMO that ever was?  Ohhhhh, I see.

As a matter of fact I swallowed one of these about two hours ago and the explanation is that it is, in fact, my hand.

They'd said before you'd have to redownload.

I'm assuming someone finally found a few brain cells to rub together on that one and beat the ones who said no about the head and shoulders with them.

False if yo consider every MMO made since Ultima.  It's about a 50/50 split of games that could patch up and others where the devs said "Install the GM from the boxed disc OR ELSE."

Plus one of the nagging things in the epic SWTOR thread was how big the client was, and how many didn't participate in the beta because of having to redownload everything at release.  Up until now, we had no confirmation of whether the beta would/could patch up or not.

It's the Mythic standard.  Always better to say "No, it's hardcoded, stop bothering us with it" and then saying "Oh hey, Jerry just got his Bachelor's in computer programming and figured out how to do it" than the opposite.  The former at least keeps the faithful faithful.  The ladder just disappoints everyone.

I don't think I've ever beta'd an MMO that let you patch that client to retail to be honest. Very nice feature, particularly because the client is so large.

What the heck. Ninja downloading while you play? Old clients patched a bunch, but old files not removed?

Hopefully this means that, once servers are up again,  we'll be able to login and download the updates, even if we are not testers anymore (we'll just get the "play" button greyed out).

Ah, a couple important filters I hope they have once they implement a "flashpoint finder" : something akin to "roleplaying" and "don't want to skip dialogues" , so that players are put into like minded PUGs at least when it comes to the general behaviour while playing a flashpoint.

Both, EVE and SWG.

Yeah, I have 18.5 gigs on a fresh install. I'm guessing the 'update' was essentially a fresh install, retaining the old files (either in place with different names, or in a backup folder). How big is your assets folder?

In browsing around the various TOR forums, it was discovered that there's quite a chunk of data in the previous weekends' client that had a bunch of useless bloat.  The Turkey weekend client may have eliminated that bloat, but it still persisted for previous client users.

I just reinstalled before this last weekend beta, as I had crashed during patching and the client got corrupted. Lucky I just upgraded my internet and have a 65Mb down line. Only took like 2 hours or so to DL the client. I think my install folder is now 18gb.

If you just updated your old client from the previous beta weekend instead of starting with a fresh one, the game just re-downloaded the entire thing without clearing out the old useless client. That's why some people have 40 gig installs, they have two installs worth in there.
