Giamatti was great, wasn't he? Actually, it's kind of rare to see kings like this in movies.. but I imagine it's close to the truth. The sense of absolute entitlement.

Also funny that Purefoy's character is the same one Heath Ledger played in Knight's Tale. I mean, they're both loosely based on him. "The Marshal". William Marshal. Also William Hurt in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. Same guy at an older age. Movies aside, he sounds like a true badass.

I loved him in everything I have seen him before. Althoug he seems a bit typecast (but that might be because of my movie preferences)

What did you think of him in The Illusionist, where he had his voice dubbed.

I have seen this movie! Un-spoilery verdict: Great battle scenes. Not enough Paul Giamatti. Ultimately disappointing.

They were trying to cram in a bunch of disparate elements, I guess.

No, the pretty much just made some shit up because the guys who actually held the castle made King John look good.

Yeah, that part is made up. General fighting in the aftermath of the Magna Carta, however, was not. I just take the movie's story as [grossly] symbolic of all of the things that went down, mixed with some romanticism akin to the Seven Samurai/Magnificent 7 or the story of the Alamo. Same with just about any Robin Hood story.

Pretty much all of it is made up beyond the fact that there was a seven week siege at Rochester Castle. I mean, the film even makes it look like there's Rochester Castle and fuck all else even though Rochester was a significant city at the time.

Also, about what you said earlier, William Marshall may well have been a badass but he was also allied to John all through the rebellion. (I know about him only because he was 1st Earl of Pembroke and mostly responsible for building the castle there. It's a fucking awesome place.  DRILLING AND MANLINESS )

The film was historically silly but enjoyable. Brian Cox is total badass and Paul Giamatti's "right hand of god" speech was magnificent. And yeah, brutal. Also, the Witcher is in it.

Agree with what has been said before. The film is a mess and more than a little bit silly in places. And yes, Paul Giamatti as King John makes me swoon. If real kings where like that Id be a monarchist.

Restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic!
