Tried opening some files from network drive...like around 300kb
Took ages to load up. 4-8 times I closed in disgust thinking it crashed.
Then I waited ...it loaded up 1 minute later...

Windows 7 - Office 2003.
I checked online for any solutions and found many ppl facing the same issues but no solutions.
Disabled anti-virus - no help
Reinstalled - no improvement

:(

Coincidentally, I had this show up for a user at a remote office on Thursday, except it's 2003 and XP.  Seems to be related to their network profile, as it follows them from PC to PC.  Might want to try logging on the PC as a different user to see if it still happens.

I have the same problem with some word files.

Usually it happens when an included .dot file in the document or a macro points to an obsolete network path. Office then tries to load the file until the network timeout (usually a few minutes) and then opens it.

That sounds plausible Jeff. How do I fix it? The Network timeout could be it.

There are several ways that this can happen

For starters look at the MS knowledge-Base articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280504/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833041/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328440/en-us

In word this usually happens when a document links to a *.dot file that is no longer at the expected path or printer drivers or fonts are broken. The workaround for that would be either

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280821/en-us

or

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830561/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826864/en-us

Also see this link - looks like it's a recent culprit as far as Excel hangs.

(flex)

If you're trying to fix this in an XP environment, just GPO logon/logoff script msiexec to uninstall the package.  Little else works given tools and default registry permissions.

When I click on a desk shortcut to open a program, I get first the statement:" There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I think I might have broken something...excel document shortcuts no longer work. I have to open excel n open the docs....wtf..

noticed it was loading a diff version of excel too...since its missing its 'tools > options' menu...

what  . the . fuck.

Then look at one of the other KB articles, there should be a solution for that one in there.
