Kind of cool - The FBI has posted two pieces of paper with some sort of encryption/code http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/fbi-wants-public-help-solving-encrypted-notes

and http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/march/cryptanalysis_032911/image/gallery for larger versions.

No prize for solving them, other than you might get some fantabulous job offers.

Unlikely to get them anywhere.  Cryptography is hard.

it's right out of the Wire.  Looks like someone's abbreviations for addresses and activities.  Good luck with that private language.

This is assuming there's an actual message to find, right?

You call it an accident. I call it justice.

There most likely is, but it's only going to make sense to the guy who wrote it.  He probably had his own abbreviations, shorthand and self-referential or context-sensitve terms on top of the code itself, so it's no surprise the cytologists couldn't come up with anything.

Shit, I have trouble going back through my own notebooks a few years later and I don't even use code.  It's just so much shorthand and context-sensitive info I have to remember what meeting I was in to remember what I was writing down.

Yeah, I used to have that problem too :  So many books of notes regarding meetings that I can barely remember the point of, never mind what was discussed.  It eventually reads like a Japanese DIY Manual.
