Apparently your nostalgia didn't include the gang-rape of every one of your characters for which Nethack is notorious.
At least you didn't spend 2 hours getting way down in the dungeon only to starve to death after puking up a dead gnome.

Mmmm nethack.... permadeath, starving locked by a boulder placed by yourself, food poisoning + a million of other ridiculous ways to die.... Just add shiney, multiplayer PvP with no limits, full-looting, market it in the right places and you got the MMOBDSMG niche covered.

Wouldn't work as well in a real-time environment. You can think about a million possible solutions to the million ridiculous ways to die, ponder which one could work. But only if the game gives you time for that.
