Japan has a whole special genre of "adult games" that sound just like what your looking for Jeff Kelly.   awesome, for real

God, No!  why so serious?

Seriously though how good can a game be that advertises 'innovative ways to kill Zombies' as its defining feature?

A lot of people will find it offensive, a few governments will want to censor the game or ban the sale and then all gaming mags will have to defend that infantile gorefest as 'entertainment for grown ups' that shouldn't be censored just like r-rated movies shouldn't.

In that respect a lot of those games have more in common with the japanese variety as you might imagine. Both pander shamelessly to the basic instincts of their target markets and reinforce the stereotypes people have about games and the people who play them.

IIRC strategic dismemberment was a highly pitched feature of the original Dead Space, a game that wasn't so terrible as you seem to be implying.

So, IGN posted a preview of Dead Rising and specifically talked about gameplay vs the trailer:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/115/1153496p1.html

My biggest disappointment is that the gameplay is different from the trailer. By that I mean that everything is different, most especially the tone. The trailer is dramatic and serious. The game is described as sort of like Dead Rising and a bit "wacky". I don't mind when CGI trailers show stuff that can't really happen in the game but when the trailer's tone is 180 degrees from the actual game? That's a bad trailer IMO. I'd play the game that trailer implied. I have no interest in Dead Rising on an island.

As I said:

Of all the features Deep Silver showed off, they seemed the most excited about how we'll be able to kill zombies. The main thing they want people to take away from Dead Island is all the gory ways you'll be able to kill the walking dead. You can chop a zombie's legs and arms off and just watch him as he flops around trying to gnaw at your ankles.

That trailer doesn't deserve to be linked with the above quote.

Someone's cut together a fantastic trailer showing the terror and sadness of a zombie attack, but the dev studio has spent the last 4 - 5 years working on fully detachable skeletons and full aesthetic damage, so that you can really see the fractured skull resulting from a crowbar to the head, or that an axe will take off the arm at the point it was hit.

Nope, Dead Island will be a zombie smasher game, and screw that emotional crap. Which bores me a bit, frankly.

I'd play a Dead Rising with no timer, wherever they choose to set it.

Wait a minute... are you trying to tell me that the upcoming zombie game from the Call of Juarez developer won't be an artistic look at the emotional impact of a zombie outbreak ?

And the only way we can avoid this is by making nothing but hello kitty, and even then I'm sure some nutjob will end up wailing about how it's "corrupting the young" or something ridiculous like that.

A chainsaw-wielding Hello Kitty fighting off a zombie outbreak would be the best game of all time.

Looks great but also annoying with fast zombies and melee combat. (yes, I just got around to watching the video)

Seems like the protagonist is taking a lot of damage, they didn't show the heal mechanic. Gameplay seems iffy, environment awesome and upgradeable weapons interesting.

I do, looks like good fun. I enjoy the slower pace it seems to have.

I'm referring to the melee combat, compared to games like Left4Dead, its slower and seems more like a "struggle" then one hit dead.

Oh ok.  I thought you meant slower paced compared to Project Zomboid.  Blew my mind for a minute.  Yea, definitely slower paced than something like Left 4 Dead by the look of it.

I don't really think Project zomboid and this are comparable, Other than "Has zombies".

Don't take that as a knock to ether title, I just think they are so vastly different as not to be comparable.

I can take or leave the combat I saw.  What I want to see is the non-combat stuff.  Show me FPS-RPG goodies where a person can be all ingenious in ways other than just duct taping a gun onto a baseball bat, and I'm sold.

I almost was able to purchase this yesterday (release date is 6 Sept.) at Future Shop, PC version.  I took it to the front counter but there was a problem ringing it in and the manager was called.  He took it back and apologized for the mistake.  I don't think I would have been able to play it anyway as it requires you to authenticate it through Steam.

Green Man Gaming had a coupon for this much like they did for Deus Ex (not sure if it still works, but it was READY-UPDEA-ISLAN ) for $34.  It's a Steamworks enabled game so I picked it up, activated it on Steam, and the preload looks like it's due to unlock at 9PM PST on Monday night.  Hopefully got a couple people I play L4D2 with picking this up.  When I first started reading about this game it brought Dead Rising to mind, but the more I've read about it, the more it also sounds like Borderlands in a lot of ways (each of the four characters you can use has a specialty, it's got the leveling, skill trees, quests and all that),

There are a number of reviews out there so far.  Reaction seems to be mixed with most reviews agreeing that the game is fun but flawed.

Really really wanted to start a new thread where the first post was "Dead Island. Where you don't decide when to quit, the game does."

But seriously, this is pretty goddamn fun.
