Graphics are the least of my concerns, in fact I didn't even mention them.

Oh I wasn't responding to you. Just to the graphics whores. :) And nothing against them. Maybe if I had the cash to get a new system I'd be a graphics whore too. 2006 era ATI X1400 Mobility is the most powerful thing I'm rocking. I'm still surprised that it can handle some of the recent games (on really low res of course).

I was drinking when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray.

Thus, WoW.

Actually I did get away with playing AoC and WAR for a while. Just couldn't stick with either because of the gameplay. No fun after Tortage or T1. I did like both for a bit but even if I'd had an uber rig, not all the eye candy in the world would have made either game fun for me. WoW still feels fun but a little of that fun has gone away. There's only one other MMO that I'm playing right now that comes close to (and in someways surpasses) WoW fun but I can't elaborate due to NDA.

The first thing my friend from work said about wow after only having played console games(she's a sonic fan apparently) was that wow was very pretty. Take that as you like, maybe wow's graphics aren't top of the line photorealistic but if people new to the entire genre see them and say "this game is pretty" then I think they are doing the job.

The only things that really look noticeably dated to me are some of the original player and monster models. Not liking the style is another thing, but the game holds up visually much better than the other similar MMOs that came out around the same time, IMO.

One uses the height of technology to make something grand, flashy and overdone while the other is much more simplistic, using basic instruments to create something larger than the sum of it's parts.  Yeah, that's a pretty good analogy.

Yessssss. The original models look totally assy now, especially if they're standing anywhere near a goblin ( Heart ), but the enviroments and such look pretty good to me still. I really like the style, though, so that helps a lot.

I tried EQ2 recently and it ... didn't look very good to me.

I like the style of WoW's art, I always have. But I'm a total fucking whore for normal mapping. I've never been a big fan of EQ2's art style, but vastly prefer the game itself and the graphics. But even that is (finally) starting to look dated. But the lighting, normal mapping, shadows, his res textures, they all come together to make a much more enjoyable experience for me.

The combat doesn't even feel that visceral as I remembered, and it immediately felt like something that I played to death for a decade now.

Rose glasses.  There were a number of classes in the original which could literally be macroed down to one button, assuming they had more than one to begin with.

I'm not sure when you're talking about Kanye and when you're talking about Mozart.  The Magic Flute, just to pick one, is massively self-indulgent musically and narratively and stretched the ranges of singers and the capacities of an orchestra in ways that had never been done before; meanwhile the last two Kanye West albums have been quite restrained compared to other mainstream hip-hop.

There were even some in vanilla. 969 comes to mind, as does the dk/enh sham /castrandom.

Decided I won't be getting back into WoW, so I have a CD key for original WoW and TBC if anyone wants them.

Think they had that with the sparkly pet too. It's something about generating product keys in batches? But generally yeah, what Margalis said.

There's gotta be a new Battle Chest coming, with Vanilla, BC and LK together. No way can they really expect people to pay $130 for the whole game.

Well seeing how the price reduction wasn't permanent they seem to be quite comfortable with the idea.
