FYI, don't let management give you any grief over workman's comp. I doubt it'll be a problem -- in my limited experience, it's the smaller businesse and more typically physical fields (construction and the like) where management often takes it as a personal affront, and at times a firing  offense, to claim workman's comp.

They pay into it for exactly stuff like this. You got injured in the course of your duties, they need to make sure your medical bills and any lost wages are covered.

I do agree that if this is the 5th time in 8 years you've been injured, your hospital might want to rethink it's security policies. Then again, I come from a business culture wherein "worker safety" is a huge aspect (and factors into things like our quarterly award fees for contract performance). It's a bit weird, since I work in an office environment, but about half the contract is either fabrication stuff or something similar where high voltages, power tools, and other nasty ways of hurting yourself are part of the job.

So "safety" isn't a piece of lip-service, especially since it can cost the company money not just in lost-time/medical costs, but in actual customer "We're giving you less money, because you had too many injuries".

Damn that sucks. I've got nothing but respect for Ambos (that's what we, and they call themselves over here). You guys have to put up with some horrible shit in your day to day work, and just keep on going and going. I know I couldn't do the job you guys do.

In our particular case, I am of a mind that the negligent party in this case (apart from the junky) is the management of the ER. Its a pretty bad working environment in that in 8 years you had 5 serious accidents (all of which could have been fatal). Does your pay reflect the risks you are taking? Does management provide adequate training and security to prevent such incidents? If not (IMHO here), you really ought to take it to next level and complain/bring industrial action against the management. You owe it to yourself, your family and your fellow co-workers. Well at least make some noise to get management off their asses and improve security. The squeaky wheel gets some grease after all...

PS:
I'm not suggesting suing the management. I am not American but over here, we do have labor protection laws and labor groups that we can complain to over unsafe working conditions. Don't know if there is anything similar in the states.

Not to get too political here, but we American's do have a government department to handle worker safety - OSHA (forget what it stands for). It's just been hamstrung by free market deregulation shitheads who think businesses can regulate themselves. Also, the state of our hospitals (because of our for-profit health system) is abysmal. Their ER is likely understaffed and overworked, as well as underpaid for the risk.

I had to go to the ER last night -- strangely, thinking of this kept me patient as we waited. They are obviously understaffed, but it was still rather annoying to wait over an hour AFTER being seen by the ER doc for the prescribed IV and two simple medications. (They weren't waiting on labs for those -- just a pregnancy test).

Luckily,  my wife had stopped vomiting and was able to sleep a little. Thank god I'd brought my Kindle.

Stitches out today, face if decreased on swelling, I can go back to work tomorrow!  I'm feeling better too, haven't had a chance to see what new things in security will be implemented.

The 5 times I've been beaten on by a patient:
1.  A guy was fine with me starting and IV, then decided to grab my arm and squeeze it.  I did the very loud, "please let go of my arm so I can take the needle out of your arm, it will be worse if you keep trying to squeeze my arm."  Another nurse came in and told him to let go.  He did, I removed the catheter and put a piece of tape.  I told him you can't grab that staff like that, the ER doc came in and told him he could leave.  This was before we had security, so pt got a ride back to his nursing home.  Sad case in that he was only 50 y.o. and had some muscle disease and liver failure ended up dieing in a couple of years.  He was angry at everyone and @ the world.
2.  A girl drunk on ETOH and Meth and yelling loudly and kicking and screaming, was in for clearance for jail.  She tore up a cop car, tore up an ER treatment room, while in handcuffs she managed to hit the officer, me and another nurse, she got a big dose of zyprexa and sent to jail.  She managed to grab my right arm and dig her nails into my forearm leaving a nice bruise and scratches.
3.  The crazy fucker who drank his own urine and spat it on me.
4.  Some crazy old lady with alzheimer's was threatening to jump out her window, she went wild and hit me in the jaw, I then restrained her and put her in her bed and we had to give her a ton of drugs to calm her down.  Sad cases, bitter women, turn into bitter old crazy women.
5.  Another crazy old man with alzheimer's who was hell bent on tearing the place up and it took a ton of drugs to keep him under control.  He slapped me and I grabbed his hand and pushed it aside, then he was tearing up stuff and tried to walk out, so I walked beside him talking to him.  He then turned and lunged @ a nurse behind us, so I took him to the floor, poor guy didn't know his name barely, but liked to tear stuff up.  It took a ton of drugs on him too.
Guess this is more like the 6th time...oh yeah had another mean lady smack my hand.  I reported that one too, especially since it helped case managers to place her in a E.C.F. and restrict her to which hospital she could go to.

We have gone from rent-a-cop security (with hours from 8pm to 5am) to security that is off duty law enforcement (5pm to 5am) and hopefully we get more security now (24 hours and 2 off-duty patrolmen).  They do have the new taser that works by disruption of the nerves system and cause them to seize for so many seconds (they can't do anything but flop and shit themselves), then a break of so many seconds, then repeat if still coming at them, it also has a pain control "dry stun" mode.  Meth and PCP sucks.

What was weird was I had told my Public Health Concepts Professor the week before that I wanted to do my research paper on violence in the workplace.

They all do this.  Sometimes they just don't get a good contact to the target and thus don't incapacitate as they should, or with the adjustable ones they're set to deliver a mild shock rather than incapacitate because the cop in question has to pay attention to SOG's dictating the proper escalation of force.

CS is actually pretty shitty though, I have it on good authority that if someone is determined enough to win a gentlemanly wager made over coffee and donuts between two emergency personnel, that they can deliver a few good kidney shots to a cop while being sprayed.

2 of our my friends and co-workers have had breast cancer.  We had a "Red Lights for Head Lights" event where they brought the pink fire trucks up during there tour of the country.  It is usually a great event in that EMS/Fire/Police/Hosp will get together and have a nice outdoor fest.  Well, at least we do :)

Update!

Just got back from court, wow was amazed that this one went so fast.  We had 3 Hospital Staff (2 RN's and 1 Paramedic) & 6 police to testify, photographs, and video's.  The trial started, and after about 45 mins, they came in and said the kid pleaded, we didn't stick around for sentencing, so he might have gotten 5 felony charges.  Was really surprised it went to trial, guess they thought we wouldn't show up for the trial.
