There was some pretty good stuff in 2013. Bioshock Infinite, GTA V, Last of Us, Saints Row 4. Mass Effect Citadel, which is one of my favorite gaming moments all time. Had some great indy stuff like Stanley Parable and Gone Home as well. But then I looked at the top 25 games lists for that year and they include stuff like AC4. Ugh.

Still, 1000x better than 2014 was.

The games you include on there are mostly the same as the list included... and frankly, Infinite made me want to punch Ken Levine in the dick, GTA V might have been interesting if it had been on fucking PC in 2013 (MASTER RACE Y0!), Saints Row 4 while interesting might as well have been DLC for 3 and anything Mass Effect after #2 is also dick-punch worthy. Your mentions of Gone Home does help ameliorate the sting a bit but still... not #4.

Last of Us wasn't groundbreaking gameplay in any way, but still an amazing movie-game experience. If not the best.

I didn't play any of the games Bunk mentioned, but 2013 gave us Shin Megami Tensei IV which is the best RPG I've played in decades. Etrian Odyssey IV and TMG also came out that year, along with Fire Emblem Awakening which made it a hallmark year for the 3DS at the very least. Path of Exile also went into both Open Beta and Actual Release in '13 so I would say it was one of the best years in gaming.

Why the fuck was that Top 10 list only in 480p?

Been using this with the in house visualization guy for one of the studios.  Quite stoked that it's free now so I can see if anyone else's wants to try their hand.  We are lacking in 3d artists versed in anything more than fucking sketchup.

Now, here's one for the "bizarre" category.

Some info before reading the article, in case you're not up-to-date with the company involved in this:

TSI Games - Company that rose from the ashes of SSI (includes some of the guys who worked on Pool of Radiance and the other "Gold Box" games)
Seven Dragon Saga - "spiritual successor" (sigh) to the aforementioned "gold box" games. They will eventually do a KS for it (hopefully they're working on something more advanced than a stock Unity engine prototype like Underworld Ascendant did)

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/237790/TSI_Partners_with_RPG_Developers_in_CrossGame_CharacterImportExport_Initiative.php

Yeah, back to early eighties, I guess: remember when you could do the same with Ultima-Bard's Tale-Wizardry-Phantasie? No? Don't blame you.

Five Nights at Freddy's 3 came out, which I guess is popular? While researching it I saw that PewDiePie has amassed an army of imitators.

I do remember that and it was cool! That said, it makes more sense to do that when different series are all popular with the same crowd. For a new series seems weird. I don't hate it though, just a weird thing to put out a press release on.

Nvidia is trying to get in on the console market now with its Shield.  It's an Android based system that allows you to play PC games through "the cloud".  The Cloud. Facepalm

The cloud gaming thing has been around for a while with the other Shield models. The new thing is an Android TV device but the GDC news has been confusing cause all the models are called Shield. I tried the portable version last year and the latency was noticible.

I've owned the latest SHIELD tablet since Christmas, and I have to say I've been loving it. (Typing this on it right now in fact.) It's basically a video card with a screen.

That said, my broadband is so horribad out here in the sticks that I haven't even tried their version of game streaming (The Grid). Steaming from a local network has been wonky too, but then my home network is very oughties and is in serious need of an upgrade.

But it works very very well as a dedicated gaming tablet, either handheld or plugged into a big screen in console mode.

I'm a day 1 purchase for that nvidia shield console.   I've loved streaming on my Shield tablet while in bed, and now that I've moved my plan in a month or two (once finances stabalize) is to move my gaming pc in the office, add gigabit ethernet to my house, and stream 1080p games to my main TV (and actually have a real office setup for once in my life).   Most good systems to stream to cost $200-300, so this is a perfect price range for me too.

Shadow of Mordor gets GOTY at GDC, while Elite: Dangerous gets the Audience Award.

Meanwhile, at the Independent Gaming Festival, Outer Wilds gets the grand prize and the design prize, while Nathalie Lawhead's crazy pop "games", Tetrageddon (definitely worth a look), get the Nuovo award which I assume has to do with novelty, or innovation, or insanity.

Considering the year in total, I am okay with Mordor getting a few nods.

Two months into 2015 and my GOTY so far is Dying Light.  This game is severely underrated, IMO.

That's pretty cool.  Wish they had buttons on the grip though because I never want my thumb off the movement controls.  So the mouse for looking and fire/alt, controller thumb for movement, and three buttons on the controller grip to give you five buttons your fingers never leave.

Favorite comments, since I don't believe anything TW says anymore and they have been in terrible decline since 2006 with Medieval 2:

Quote
Removing the family skill tree is one of the reasons I didn't buy Rome 2
I find it funny how creative assembly have just reminded us how good their old games were compared to Rome 2.
Total War, the glory days ended for you with Medieval 2. Fuck you corporate whores. I doubt I would ever give you any more money ever again.
All these total war games have one thing in common: The battlefield AI is dumber than a second coat of paint.
Why is Total War: Rome 2 there? I thought nobody liked Total War: Rome 2 a lot of people told me its like the Sonic 06 of the Total War games (because Sega).
Rome Total Shit II, along with Attila Total Shit; I want a refund...
Total War went to shit after Napoleon.
I thought the title said 15 year olds creating total war in the comment section
Oh god, are they delving into fantasy... please say no....
i still play rome 2004 to this day, such a amazing game
To bad the latter games suck.

So, the KS for "Seven Dragon Saga" by TSI is online:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/537511454/seven-dragon-saga-by-tactical-simulations-interact

Yeah, SSI "alumni" and whatnot.

IMO, the video pitch is absolutely horrible (yeah, Underworld Ascendant was only slightly better). I mean, I played fuckin' Hillsfar on the C64, Wizard's Crown, Rings of Zilfin, the gold box games etc. , I would really like to give 'em at least 10 bucks, but I expected quite more considering when they first announced their project (last september). Have to agree with user "covr" on RPGCodex:

Quote
Guys, you've really backed this? It looks amateurish as shit, terrible pitch, messed up backer rewards... With bunch of old farts, probably they have been out of computer gaming for years. You know, they've made some great games in the past, when they were young, creative, healthy and effective. Now they are rotting overweight fucks, who can't even made mediocre video pitch. Don't get your hopes so high.
