abandoning blizzard conscientiously and supporting the digital picket line is ... well, it doesn't feel like much of a sacrifice today

like at least we have that going for us — it's not a big ask

Oh no, I have to not play the shit post-legion implosion of WoW? I can't piss away my time in the awful slog of modern hearthstone? I can't experience the WC3 remake everyone hates? Oh no, I'll miss out on their garbage mobile gatcha diablo, oh noooo

i thank them for imploding on obvious lines both ethically and product quality related to make it so that there's no "good product but by evil person" dilemma where we're like oh man the game's pure sex do we really want to stop playing it just because the creator tazers puppies for fun

Diablo II: Resurrected is coming out in two months. It's going to be sad not playing that at launch unless they somehow manage to clean house before then.

I guess I'm lucky in that regard - having now actually played the original Diablo 2, I still can't see what all the fuss is about. The last Blizzard game I played was Overwatch, but WoW and Warcraft 2 are literally the only Blizzard products I've ever spent that much time with. I've never held them in the regard that most do, and what they've put out lately has been underwhelming even by my own low opinion of them. Boycotting them isn't a problem, and Activision hasn't put out a product I've wanted since Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

I'm more or less in the same place with D2:R.  I played it to death when it came out, my interest in a light remaster is not very high.

OW2 is not mustering a great deal of excitement with the changes they've made (only 1 tank, it'll be fine guys honest (it probably really really won't)).

D4 I dunno but D3 disappointed initially, especially the auction house or bot farming being nearly required to progress and get that loot.  After that, the game just seemed to lack oomph for me, in several areas.  Maybe D4 will be better, who knows.  Maybe by then Activision-Blizzard won't be a man-hive of direness too.  (ha)

Diablo Gatcha, well, I played quite a bit of a gatcha game already (Fire Emblem: Heroes) and my desire to ever touch a gatcha game again is approximately nil.

The only Blizzard title me (or anyone from my circle of friends) is/was remotely excited for was WOW Classic BC (and eventually WOTLK)... not so much anymore. If Blizz can't even hold on to us boomers with our nostalgia glasses and fat credit cards, they're proper fucked.

D2R is the only one I was looking forward to, but I'm comfortable not giving them any money if they're going to continue being shitbags.

The Ascent is out and it's better than I thought it could be. It's gorgeous and fun to play and explore. Unfortunately, the loot seems shit and that's the saddest news.

Played an hour going through the intro and now my left wrist hurts. The game is a "twin-stick" shooter which means on M+K to move you use WASD (rebindable), but because of the isometric camera and level design layout, to move in a cardinal direction from the game's/camera's perspective you have to move diagonally which requires pressing two movement keys at the same time which is not what you normally have to do with WASD-shooter style movement (you turn / rotate with mouse instead) and is very awkward-feeling unless it's something you do regularly, which I don't, hence the wrist pain. And I was constantly running into walls, especially when dodging, cause I'm not used to pressing two of the WASD keys at once to move in a "regular" direction.

The game does support controllers but only provides icons for an Xbox controller so while you can use a PS4 controller, and it detects and uses it without needing to run DS4Windows, you won't get the Dual Shock icons. Also for some reason the movement ring registration is off for the PS4 controller and you move slower than either using the keyboard or an Xbox controller. On the Xbox controller it annoyingly won't detect it if you plug it in / turn it on after the game is running. And controller support seems half-baked with many screens not showing the button icons / controls that are applicable. And the controller button prompts on objects in the world itself are super hard to read.

And speaking of button prompts the game does not normally tell you with the game-world interactable objects if you are supposed to press/tap the button or hold it. I got stuck very early on cause a terminal to advance the quest needed a hold press even though the smaller door terminals nearby just require a tap press and I thought there was something I was missing to activate the big terminal and was running around searching for something else to interact with. Probably most annoying is how fucking long you have to hold down the button to get out of the tutorial pop-up screens and some other menus. Thousands of man-hours are going to be wasted by players waiting for those fucking windows to disappear assuming the game becomes popular (and it is getting good reviews).

Getting back to controller vs M+K, one advantage of using the controller for movement is that unless you are moving the right stick as well your character will auto-face the direction you are moving. With M+K you have to move the aiming reticle with the mouse to get your character to face the direction you are moving which is just the way it works with M+K twin-stick controls but is annoying when you aren't actually shooting at things. But of course with the controller you give up the precision aiming you get with the mouse. Once my wrist calms down I'll play it some more with the Xbox controller and see if that's an acceptable way to play. Or maybe I'll wait for somebody to create a mod with the PS4 controller icons and try to fix the wonky joystick movement range with DS4Windows or hope they patch that as I much prefer the PS controller over the Xbox one.

Oh another thing that's annoying is that the game doesn't "hide" objects as you move behind them. It does show you an outline of your character when you are obscured by objects by there's a long delay before that outline appears so most of the time you can't even see yourself, much less what's hidden behind the object(s). I got stuck a couple of times in the tutorial mini-boss room trying to move around the large central pillar in the room because I couldn't see myself or the outline of the base of the pillar on the hidden side.

Edit: yeah controller sucks too. LB/RB, DPad left and right and the left stick all switch menu screens even though LB/RB are the only buttons listed. I'm constantly switching screens accidentally because of that. Worse, RT is fire and not RB. That's way way too slow to use.

So I was excited about Battlefield 2042 right up until I played the open beta. My 4-year old machine with a Nvidia 1060 simply couldn't handle it. On medium settings it was barely playable and looked like complete and total ass. This is the same machine I played BF4 on, and it ran fine with little tweaking and looked worlds better. I even played Battlefield 5 with it and don't remember significantly downgrading anything.

You aren’t missing anything. The game is far far worse than any of the most recent games (BF4, BF1, BF5). The graphics and graphical details are nicer than BF4, which is to be expected since that game is almost 8 years old now (but still looks quite nice), but all the new highly touted features like Specialists and the Plus system are terribad. The only map available in the Beta Orbital is horrible as well.

I got hyped for BF2042 as well and have been playing BF4 in anticipation of 2042’s release since I haven’t played a BF seriously since 2 but after playing 3 matches of the Beta I’m very happy I didn’t preorder and will wait a year or so to get the game at 50% off or more and enjoy the games people have created for Portal mode.

A non-comprehensive list of tracks dropped from the upcoming GTA remastered trilogy:

Quote
GTA: Vice City
Michael Jackson -“Billie Jean”
Michael Jackson -“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin”
Ozzy Osbourne -“Bark At The Moon”
Kate Bush -“Wow”
Herbie Hancock – “Rock It”
Afrika Bambaataa -“Looking For The Perfect Beat”
Lionel Richie – “Running with the Night”

GTA: San Andreas
2 Pac – “I Don’t Give A f*ck”
Compton’s Most Wanted – “Hood Took Me Under”
NWA – “Express Yourself”
Ozzy Osbourne – “Hellraiser”
Rage Against the Machine – “Killing in the Name”
Charles Wright – “Express Yourself”
The Blackbyrds – “Rock Creek Park”
James Brown – “Funky President”
Macer & The Macks – “Soul Power ‘74”
James Brown – “The Payback”
The JB’s – “Grunt”
Ultramagnetic MC’s – “Critical Beatdown”
Fatback – “Yum Yum”
Roy Ayers – “Running Away”
The Gap Band – “You Dropped A Bomb On Me”
Tom Petty – “Running Down A Dream”
Joe Cocker – “Woman to Woman”
Black Harmony – “Don’t Let It Go to Your Head”
Blood Sisters – “Ring My Bell”
Driving around listening to cool tunes was a big part of the enjoyment of VC and in particular SA for me. I was pretty tempted, as SA is still my overall favorite GTA (due to setting/music), but after hearing the (frankly inevitable) news about the soundtrack, I'm far less enthusiastic.

Apologies for the source link to a crap site: https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/22/22739195/remastered-grand-theft-auto-trilogy-release-date-november-11th-gta3-vice-city-san-andreas

In similar news, apologies for the handful of Rocksmithers here, they're hitting the end of their licensing and have begun delisting tunes. If you want some back catalog tracks, pick them up in the next steam sale. Seems to be a 10yr deal, so mostly OG tracks right now, and it's expected to cascade in order of release (so the last RS 14 tracks should be delisted in around 9 years, unless they do a comprehensive delisting as part of the RS+ license deal). I'd also recommend stocking up on your custom forge favorites...just in case.

Apparently Far Cry 6 is sending out emails to people who didn't play it much in the voice of the antagonist taunting them for their lack of engagement.

I am sure this is a winning strategy.

Apparently we've reached the point where AAA single-player games* can not reach their profit targets without "micro" transactions. Otherwise why would Ubisoft care if players have stopped playing since they already got their "box" sales money.

We probably hit that point a whole console generation ago, they're just getting more clever and/or desperate about it.

Yes the non-micro micro transaction model in non-free-to-play AAA games was from the previous generation but at least they didn't spam your email trying to get you to log back in so they could shove more ads in your face.

Reason #783 why you should buy GotG. Support singleplayer non-RMT AAA gaming!

Also, Drax is downright amazingly voiced and written.

RS delisting continues. I won't post every update, but if you're a fan of RS, this is a reminder that every month tracks are being delisted, in order of release (10 year license deal).

I believe that any song packs broken by a component song being delisted will still allow the other tracks (that have yet to be delisted) be purchased individually.

Which sounds encouraging on the heels of the very good GotG game...but they took exactly the wrong lesson (they feel the developer was the wrong choice, not game-as-a-service :\ ).

I actually enjoyed the gameplay (though it doesn't get decent until around level 20 and it's grindy). But after playing Spider-Man and having most or all of the suits unlocked, it was a real shitty thing to see 40 outfits with 3 or 4 unlocked and most not obtainable through normal gameplay of a normal person who just wants to play a single player game.

Avengers was such a clusterfuck of a game, I'm amazed it hasn't been shitcanned already. GotG got it right by having a clear focus on what it wanted to be. I'm still playing it through, but have invested more time in it than Avengers by a long-shot.

Big patch for the GTA trilogy debacle: https://www.polygon.com/22809777/gta-trilogy-definitive-edition-patch-update-graphics

I don't see how they can actually fix the fact that they based it on the goddamned mobile port.

Even with the neutered song list, I likely would've bought it just to run through the games again with some QoL improvements. But nah. That's crazy, using arguably the worst version of the games to work from?

Ubisoft is going to sell NFT cosmetics for Ghost Recon Breakpoint that are also on a blockchain.  Or something.

I dunno, it seems real dumb and buzzwordy.  Which means they'll probably make a lot of money from idiots spending cash on pants that they don't own and will probably have less than 0 value even while the game is running.

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/12/ubisofts-first-nft-plans-make-no-sense/

From the sound of it they're not even unique cosmetics, just "pants" with a serial number on them, which is what supplies the uniqueness.  Also a history of who owned that cosmetic, because I do want to know if my pants were owned by xXx MuhBalzOnUrFaec xXx or whatever the cool kids are naming themselves these days.

This initial offering is effectively just a test run -- i.e. they are seeding the initial marketplace with a bunch of non-unique items since it's easier / quicker that way and will wait and see how both the technology works out and whether or not people have an interest in buying and selling before creating more, presumably less "mass-produced", items. Still begs the question why use NFTs. E.g. people have been buying and selling CS:GO skins for almost a decade now without the need for NFTs to do the transactions. It is nice that this will be another way to turn virtual goods into real-world money (though again you don't need NFTs to do that now) so in that regard I think it's a good thing.

Edit: Also Breakpoint for the PC is on sale right now if you don't already have it and if you want to get in on the ground floor awesome, for real
