From the artistic genius of the Strause Brothers, directors of AvP:Requiem comes Skyline - a film about giant alien vacuums from space.

I like sci fi, I like invasion movies, I like explosions and mayhem, I don't expect anything else. The last scene with the ship sucking up people, was epic.

It's not a summer movie.  Think they'll have the balls to have it end poorly for the humans?

New trailer, new terror!  Apple site unfortunately: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/skyline/

Still looks awful but my predilection for alien invasion movies may yet get the better of me.

OK, I've watched the full trailer.  Independance Day with Biomechs.

I eagerly await this thread becoming 20 pages due to the fighting.

Looks meh.  I do like the giant organic creatures but it really just seems like idependence day 2 and I'm not very interested in that.

Not terrible, but reminds me of Independence Day if the invaders were that monster from Cloverfield.

Independence Day was an action movie in the 1970's disaster genre (plucky band of stereotypes work together to save the day). This looks like it's aiming for 1970's survival horror (mismatched band of stereotypes work at cross purposes and are killed off one by one). In the first, the spectacle is seeing things destroyed, and in the second the point is to see people destroyed... both physically and mentally. They're really very different sorts of films.

I agree that the trailers don't make Skyline look particularly good. It'll be deeper than Independence Day (again, largely because of the differences in their genres) but it won't be nearly as much stupid fun.

It'll be deeper than Independence Day...

An evaporated puddle of piss is deeper than Independence Day.  It's a dumbed down War of the Worlds - even down to the aliens being defeated by a virus.  But I've ranted about this before. This already looks better than that film. This will shoot to the top of my C.21st alien invasion films if the aliens win and the surviving humans don't get their asses hauled out of the fire by a Deus Ex Machina.

No argument... but Independence Day made four metric tons of money. With the budget Skyline is displaying, the movie you want it to be wouldn't make it past test audiences. I don't think there'll be a Deus Ex Machina... my guess is that the aliens are just visiting and after they get what they want, they leave. Humanity gets to picking up the pieces, but THEY MIGHT BE BACK SOME DAY. Ooh.

Film opens this weekend.

Despite my initial cynicism, I may go and see it - am absolutely in the mood for some low budget sci-fi trash.  (No, I still don't think it's going to be any good - absolutely no previews or reviews this close to release)

This was a remarkable troll. Highlight for me was losing it when a friend said vaya con dios 10 seconds before David Zayas, and my uncontrollable laughter when the credits rolled.

Just like the Sentinel UAV in the film this is the little bad movie that somehow dodged all the roadblocks to make it to the big screen.

Jesus, down to 11%.  This is heading towards Last Airbender levels of hate.

How the fuck can you make an Alien invasion movie that gets this bad of ratings?

Well my guess would be people going into the movie looking for a plot instead of just the shinies.

edit: Looking at the WIRED discussion:

Quote
io9: Why was it important to make all of the aliens different?

Greg Strause: Some of it will be the back story that we want to get into in the next movie, there’s a lot of groundwork that we laid out here.

I love when they make a movie and already have the sequel in the works.  Ohhhhh, I see.

It's a problem in modern movies - no-one wants to make a film, they want to make a franchise.

... with the franchise usually having the depth and complexity of a D&D game DM'ed by a 12 year old raised on David Eddings novels.

That'd be because the money's not in the movie, it's in the merchandising.  Yogurt had it right.

Oddly, the real father of that idea, George Lucas, made most of the money from the last 3 pieces of shit star wars movies from movie sales. The legions of toys he pumped out to make real money sold like relative shit. I remember being dragged around the toy stores by my girlfriend at the time and the banks of star wars toys all were sitting there looking lonely and unloved.

I know, amusing isn't it.  Part of that failure is that the fuckers are $10 apiece, $7 on 'sale.'  awesome, for real    The other being.. kids don't seem to play with toys like we did.  Too many electronic things and fads aimed at kids these days.  I recall my nephews wanting Bakugan and Yu-Gi-Oh cards because that's what their friends played with.  I don't think any of them have ever owned an action figure past the age that they were done with Rescue Heroes.

The Clone Wars cartoon stuff seems to be selling well, though.

This only cost $10 million to make. They'll do that in the first weekend alone even if everyone hates it.
