Wow, the abandoned mines in 1.9.4 are MASSIVE.  I've spent the last 2-3 hours working my way through one and it just keeps going.  Great source of wood, fence, rail tracks, various seeds (watermelon, pumpkin, etc) in chests, etc, etc.  Iron continues to be highly abundant in underground mines and caverns.

I need to come up with a better way of marking where I've been and what I've done.  Signs are rather clumsy.  I've been walling off explored deadends with cobblestone walls and a 2-high door and partially explored areas to check later with cobblestone walls and a 1-high opening (to avoid monster traffic).

I really wish I could carry a couple buckets of paint and mark the walls in different colors ^^

I had an abandoned mine in my 1.8.1 world that I spent several (real world) days exploring and never found the end of it.

In my new single player 1.9.1 (Ninepointforia, I'm creative!), my spawn point is about a hundred blocks from a ravine that bisected a mine at the bottom. So my own  mine should provide some good returns.

I must have done something odd when building my spawn point shack, can't sleep there. Monsters keep spawning inside. Sleeping down in my workroom at the top of the mine.

Make sure you have stone or wood floors as well as walls.

Sometimes moving the bed so it's not against a wall helps if you're all encased in blocks you placed and they're still spawning.

Be sure to sleep in it after you move it (I often forget that step).

1.9.1 or 1.9.4?

Moving the bed away from the wall will generally fix the problem.  I've also heard having the walls 2 blocks thick works too, but I have not verified this.

Pointforia! Woops.

I did forget to stone over the floor, it's dirt. If that doesn't work, I'd have to rebuild the entire structure, because it would throw off the buttressing.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I've found that the bed needs 2 blocks of free space on all sides to prevent monster spawning.

Never had that issue. When I went nomad in 1.8.1, a 2x2x2 cube with a torch and bed was sufficient every time. Material didn't matter, nor did wall thickness. I would just scoop out a little cube anywhere, seal it, drop a torch and bed, and sleep.

Can someone give me the run-down of differences between SSP and SMP?

Your fellow players may replace your floor boards with TNT and pressure plates.

Mods are the other big difference; most mods are either SSP or SMP and most SMP mods need to be installed both on the server and by all players.

Also SMP is generally a little laggy (even on good servers) so creepers are much more deadly; they still explode even when you're a distance away from them.

Found that one out the hard way. Odd thing is, the one I was farther from while wearing leather pants (I was the lizard king) blew me up but the second one when I was grabbing my stuff only knocked me to half health. Whee. Certainly does remove the cockiness of SSP down a couple notches.

I always end up doing the dash attack or use arrows for creeper-slayin' in SMP. Helps prevent lag-related explosions from pure hit-and-fade melee.

I also found an abandoned mine I have to pacify below Snowy MUFF. I got lost the first time and just had to dig straight up to get out and figure out where the hell I was.

Bzalthek and I have been working on the rail station for the new map, though I think at this point Bzalthek has done 90% or more of the work.

Either way, for those of you who don't play Minecraft or on our server, I'll be posting some screenshots when I have time.

It was interesting eavesdropping on the process, can't wait to see it.

As soon as I get my crappy mine down to the basement, get some redstone so I can build a few maps to find my way back across the sea to the central hub!

The compass is off.  Per Notch, in Minecraftia the sun rises in the north.  tongue

I don't care, per Bzalthek, Notch can fuck off with his northern sun!

Not anymore!  The sun now rises in the east.

Also, clouds float west.  This caused me to go in circles, when I assigned east to where the sun/moon rises, and therefore north to the direction the clouds move.  I didn't realize it was fixed in 1.9pre4, so I'd head off relative to the sun and then move relative to clouds (thinking they were moving north not west).  No wonder!

I never understood why it mattered where he said North was. What exactly, outside of Map viewers, did it affect prior to the compass being implemented?

awesome, for real

I like doing that type of stuff. I believe the Northbound Line platform in the train station has some of the track signage up.

I'm really looking forward to figuring out how I'm going to make the system map. Right now I'm toying between making it out of signs or, what I'm leaning towards more, is updating whichever texture file holds the paintings.
