I think you can get around that 1 block thing with repeaters as your inputs?

But yes, Redstone is finicky shit most of the time.

Redstone doesn't feel like it ever got completed really, with the finnicky power supply rules and placing shit.  I found out that pistons can only be powered by a single line of redstone wire, but if you place another piston next to it and try to power that one too the wires link, and all of a sudden no power gets to either piston.  I'm sure there's all kinds of neat shit you can make with it if you have the patience of a saint or are autistic, but unless there's a wiki setup with a diagram I'm dealing with simple uses only.

I think that may have more to do with you need one block of straight line into ANY object before its powered, maybe?

This is the simplest solution I've found so far:

Haven't tried using repeaters as wires yet though, will have to give that a go.

I just logged into the server, and wow! what beautiful creations!

I've been too busy running around looking at things to actually do anything.  I've read up to about page 4 of this thread, and figure I ought to finish that before actually doing anything too.

What direction should I head?

I'm almost completely intimidated.

(Playing single player)

I made a little cave to start with, then exanded it downward, and mined a lot.  Then I decided to make a quarry further away, and built a little 6x6x6 stone cabin (inside dimensions are 4x4x4).  Never had a mob come into my cave, but practically every night in my stone cabin (with a stone floor and ceiling, one wood door with hinges on inside), I get those skeletons shooting arrows and zombies.

Is this normal?  How are they getting in?

Edit: Nevermind, my bed was against the barrier to outside, and apparently that makes them spawn in the room.  I moved it.

Beds are still pretty glitchy; I've got a very well lit house with a bed in the center of the 2nd floor that still gets a zombie every once in a while.  Shaking fist

I read in the wiki that having walls to the outside 2thick will prevent this.  I haven't tried it.  I haven't seen a mob spawn inside yet after putting my bed away from the wall though.

Is there a good way to farm spiders without happening upon a spider spawner?  I wish I could find more string easily.

Were they spawning when you slept? Easiest solution to that is to move the bed away from the wall. Otherwise, start dropping torches in an ever widening circle around the area you are working - just makes life much easier if monsters can only spawn a half mile away.

Yes, the problem I was having is that they were spawning when I went to sleep. The bed is away from the wall, and the room is pretty well lit. I don't have 2-thick walls, though; maybe I should fix that.

All of my fortifications have 2 block thick exterior walls, at a minimum!

It's like you people aren't planning for the zombie invasion in patch 1.8!  why so serious?

I generally build things with "will it look cool" and "will it consume a fuckton of resources" as my primary considerations. Making everything 2-thick just doubles the amount of stone (or whatever) I need to farm, and doubles the construction time. I'll probably go do it for my main house and my underground bolt-holes, but that's probably it.

Something about sandboxes makes me prepare for the zombie apocalypse, even when said apocalypse can be defeated by 5 torches and a doorknob.

You can't, it says so in the beginning.  It's only about how long you can survive. I get it, the same thing killed it for me after the first 45 mins.

Spiders seem to love spawning in trees.

That explains why they spawn above my cave entrance but not around my quarry much.

I can't seem to focus much on one particular thing.  I have my first hideyhole cave, which I guess is my main place.  A bank of furnaces, a staircase mine down to bedrock with branches off that when I see something interesting.  I have a quarry, that I play in when I just want to mindlessly fool around and get rock.  I made a really ugly tower just to sort of get a feel for that.  I built a "road" of sorts from my main place to my quarry.  I built a really ugly house at my quarry. I built a nice house on top of the mountain above my cave.  I have plans to make a big lava column on top of that once I figure out how to do it without burning up.

Nothing is finished, because I get an itch to go spelunking and then start a new project.  What a fun game to lose hours in!  Even the creepers don't bother me much.

I still have tons of stuff to try.   Heart Minecraft.

Spiders, Creepers, Skeletons and Zombies only require darkness and solid ground to spawn. They also will not spawn inside X squares of a player. It's something like 20-25 squares away.

That's why you never find monsters in a area you are currently active in, but as soon as you travel somewhere else the creepers start falling out of the trees and stuff.

That's what those monster farms are basically exploiting, you can easily force monster spawns if you control space/darkness properly.

A Minecraft Artifacts Mod is being developed and is described in elongated image format.

Some additional info for those interested.

Very interested to see how both this and the adventure update turn out.

What happens when "What Notch wants to make" and what makes the game actually better, don't line up anymore.

I guess you're trying to make a  case that developers trying to stick to "the vision" rather than what the players actually want it a bad thing.  I guess thats fine.  But I really don't feel like its a hard hitting argument.  Hell, I don't use like 50% of the stuff thats in the game as it is, so whatever.

The game would seem to be at the pretty much unbreakable stage at this point, and I can't fathom anything he could add to actually detract from the game now.

 awesome, for real

Could be a clever troll... Hunger bar... oh god. What else could it be but a hunger bar? Well I can now fathom things he could do to detract from the game.

I don't see it being a huge problem in a survival mode game.  My guess is that its actually an experience bar though, he mentioned the possibility of RPG like stuff.
