Yeah he's said for a while now that he wants to work with the players to add things into the game that they feel should be in there... as long as he agrees. So it definitely should have that "community developed" feel.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting that Notch wasn't involving the community enough, only that just because a mod exists (and works/is neat), doesn't mean it necessarily has to be added to the base game, even though it often feels like "Oh hey, this is fully functioning, notch should just 'add it'" even though that is not always as trivial as it might seem.  You guys don't need to be told that though.

*shrugs* The point is more whether or not its worth taking the time to do it with a small dev team when they are features that may or may not actually be all that good.  Like that video linked on the last patch.  Some of that might be worth implementing, but just because its neat doesn't mean it all fits with what notch wants to make.

I guess you're trying to make a  case that developers trying to stick to "the vision" rather than what the players actually want it a bad thing.  I guess thats fine.  But I really don't feel like its a hard hitting argument.  Hell, I don't use like 50% of the stuff thats in the game as it is, so whatever.

And I use pretty much 100% of the placeable blocks and still find choices lacking.

The game is great as it stands. Everything added to it is pretty much gravy at this point, save for the single nagging cavet that he said it would keep getting updates. So now I expect me some updates.
Notches "vision" for the game was, place some blocks like legos. Vision accomplished.
His goal now is to sell more game to keep his dreaming floating. Employees require paychecks.

Fordels arguement to me was more along the lines of Notch going derptastic with design choices or some such down the line and slapping all sorts of crap into the game that just break it.
How Notch would manage this I have no idea. The game would seem to be at the pretty much unbreakable stage at this point, and I can't fathom anything he could add to actually detract from the game now.

Adventure mode or whatever could be completely awesome, or completely game-ruining. You never know!

Most of the basics of the game engine is in place, so it’s time to flesh this game out into something more gamey. More content, more exploration, more things to do, and interesting combat! Once this update is out, there will only some tweaks, optimizations and code cleanups left to the core game before we can call it a full release.

We’ve got a list of some 40+ things we want to add to the game, some small, some big. Some huge. We’ve finished a fair number of the items, but there’s still a significant amount of work left. While I can’t reveal the date yet for various reasons, we do have a release date for the Adventure Update in mind, and we’re hoping we’ll be able to hit it.

Jens and I are keeping the exact contents of the update secret, but we do leak some information every now and then to keep people interested and to stop us from going insane. For the most immediate spoilers, you can follow us on Twitter (@notch and @jeb_), or on Google+ (+Markus Persson and +Jens Bergensten).

Here are a few of the things we’ve revealed so far:

  •     NPC villages
  •     Randomly generated dungeons
  •     New biome code
  •     Fully working Creative Mode (and individual admins can enter Creative Mode on a Survival Mode server if they choose)
  •     Critical hits
  •     Sprinting
  •     More farming options

As soon as I can reveal the release date we’re aiming for, I will!

Oh, and the modding support is happening, honest.

This sounds really cool. I'd like some form of character progression too if we're going to have more interesting combat.

So we create levels and go adventuring? Or there are random levels we still build in and go adventuring? We are the dungeon masters?

Random stuff that adds to the sense of adventure. Fuller dungeons, new biomes, NPC settlement encounters and random temple ruins.

'Character Progression' should be limited to the same progression in Zelda for NES/SNES.

It's pretty much already there really, just don't have bonus hearts yet.

I decided on putzing around some solo minecraft and build my tower of babel.  Well, I decided I'd finally futz around with redstone and....well I figured I ought to look up redstone on the minecraft wiki.

Now my brain hurts.

Oh come on, what could be easier?

 Argh!

Redstone would be far far far more intuitive if there were output-only and input-only torches instead all its dumb rules about the height of going into or out of a torch to specify in or out.  The next most welcome thing would be a vertical wire.

I spent way too long wiring up one of these this week:

It is the most finicky shit in the world.  I destroyed/rebuilt so many of the slices, and I still don't know what I changed to finally get it to work right.  God knows I'm never touching it again now that it works.

What's that really complex one do anyway, proudft? I tinkered with redstone and sticky pistons today for the first time. It took me a good three hours to get a simple retractable drawbridge type thing going, with an XOR gate to operate it. The whole thing only took forever because I had already built a moat around my castle, so I had to tunnel under that (into my basement/dungeon) twice; once for the outside switch, and again for the pistons on the outside. And even though it works I have very little idea wtf I did, I was just copying a diagram off the wiki for the gate.

The thing that annoys me about redstone is that it takes up far too much space to do anything useful with.

I'd much rather a system where you can select a channel (say from 0-7) for a switch (lever, button, plate) or an activateable object (like a door or piston).  Switches broadcast their state in a range of perhaps 8 or 16 blocks and activateable objects on the same channel track that state.  Introduce a new entity, a "script" block which allows you to implement simple programs (either ~10-20 lines of a simple BASIC/lua/etc like language or some simple visual programming language) which can listen to or broadcast state and now you can do things like  switch1->0  plate->1  2->door  script "if IN(0) and IN(1) then SET(2,1) else SET(2,0)" and you have a pressure plate that only opens the door when the switch is engaged, etc.

This is the kind of thing that makes me wish I could take 6 months off and work on a minecraft clone every now and again.   The other big reason would be to build it in C++ and design it to scale to 30-60 users with decent performance on a server.  The java based minecraft server stuff just does not anywhere near reasonably performant.

Redstone doesn't feel like it ever got completed really, with the finnicky power supply rules and placing shit.  I found out that pistons can only be powered by a single line of redstone wire, but if you place another piston next to it and try to power that one too the wires link, and all of a sudden no power gets to either piston.  I'm sure there's all kinds of neat shit you can make with it if you have the patience of a saint or are autistic, but unless there's a wiki setup with a diagram I'm dealing with simple uses only.

The second one is the train station switchboard, as Fordel said.  For our completely overkill main train station to hook together three existing lines - but I put in seven lines for the FUTURE.

The first one is some random thing off the redstone circuits page - a D Flip Flop - and I have no idea what the hell it is.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

The piston thing was really pissing me off yesterday. It makes no sense that you have to give each piston an independent line of power, but that the redstone doesn't actively link to the pistons itself.

I think that may have more to do with you need one block of straight line into ANY object before its powered, maybe?
