How does this work, do I need to patch manually?  Also, does updating mean you can't connect until the server updates, etc, or will stuff just work

The launcher needs to be updated so go to minecraft.net and download a new one. From there it will update your game automatically. After that any mods you were using (i'm guessing the 3d dot heros skin) will have to be reapplied to your minecraft.jar

You won't be able to connect to any servers because the update is forced and you won't be able to login with an old client. You won't be able to connect until Trippy can update the server *NOTE* without Lamahcraft 1.7 as its currently broken with todays update.

Minecraft Alpha 1.0.16, Minecraft Server 0.1.1, and a new Launcher patch notes and instructions.

Ok, i'm just going to hold off until the server gets updated then

Should I just leave the server the way it is now so you guys can keep using the furnaces? There's no real gameplay changes in the server update -- it's just admin stuff.

The game will force you to update no matter what, so the server needs to be updated either way.

Soon as they logout/close the launcher it will force the update.

I just logged in with the old launcher.  After signing in I get a note that it is outdated, but after choosing to "play offline" I can select multiplayer and join the server like normal.

I made a little shrine to a tree sapling last night.  The way the water comes down to form a natural entrance is pretty cool.

The challenge is going to be finding it again since I was totally lost after almost drowning in Bzalthek's tree farm.

Is there some better instructions for the skin pack than "put this into the .jar"?  Because I don't know how to do that.

Also connection refused.  I love alphas. why so serious?

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Well, Trippy was just taking the server down a few minutes ago, I don't know if its up and running again yet.

also:

Open the .jar file with winrar, then drag the contents of the skin pack in (not the parent folder if there is one for the pack you are using), then save.  Then afterwards I think you need to change minecraft.jar to read only or some jazz if I remember,

That high glass house is from whoever dumped all the water tiles and TNTd holes in the seabed. I'll go tear it down and remove the lava (If it looks like it was placed rather than legit)

If anyone sees huge holes in the sea, let me know and I'll go block them up.

The lava was a flow out of a mountain, I can't tell if it was placed or not, but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems at present.

haven't seen any ocean problems.

SuperLlama is working on an update to his patches so it hopefully shouldn't be too long before that will be ready.

Open the .jar file with winrar,

Oh, yea.  Derp.  I assume applying read-only will prevent it from being updated.

Open the .jar file with winrar,

Or rename it to .zip and open in your favorite zipfile editor (aka 7zip), add the files from the pack, exit and rename back to .jar.

Click for full size PNG map (3MB).

Fun fact: Since moving to the dedicated server, the map file has expanded from roughly 6.5MB to 26.8MB

For a world that size, that's pretty awesome data compression.

Has anyone been to the edge of the map?  What happens if you go there?

Also: Server is pretty unstable at the moment, I'm going to stay logged out for now.

The Alpha has infinite map size so I think it generates more terrain as people move to the 'edge'.  When mining if you hit bedrock thats the limit of the bottom of the world (though apparently there are some holes you can fall through), and the clouds seem to be at the upper limit at a level you can't build at anymore.

Is this the case for multiplayer as well?  I was under the impression it wasn't infinite like the single player.

You can go above clouds, but there is an upper ceiling i believe.

Hmm interesting, I guess that makes sense, Rockchops and I went pretty far north of the dome earlier and I couldn't place where we were on the map, maybe it was far enough out that new stuff was generated

Oooh, pretty picture!

I think that's the part I love best; the infinite world.  Always room for someone else, always something new to explore.

I'm looking forward to some gentrification when Nix's mine becomes prime real estate and gets redeveloped into apartments.

Edit: Regarding Night-time and the day cycle. Is this just where the multiplayer server is at, or have we turned it off? Would be nice to get at least a quick cycle of night when it becomes possible, for lighthouses and stuff.

so what is the deal with liquids, should we remove it if we find it while digging/building, or can we meld it into our work

and does it really cause that big of a problem with the newer version?  I know the old one where water flooded endlessly did, while it was doing chunk updates.
