Developer: Mojang Specifications (Notch Persson)

Cost: $27 USD Buy Here!

Minecraft is a game that somewhat defines its own genre and has been best described as Rogue meets Dwarf Fortress meets 3D Dot Heroes. The game is being developed by Markus Persson (Notch) who has stated that his only true design decision is to keep the game fun and accessible.

Wiki Links

Crafting - Explains crafting in its basic form and gives picture recipes for how to create specific items.

Furnace - Breaks down using the furnace, burng times for different fuels and provides a table of raw material outputs when used in the furnace.

Data Values - A list of the item data values in Minecraft. Useful for spawning items when their crafted counterparts don't work or if you want to mess around in Singeplayer.

Server Commands - A list of commands for admins, ops and users. Note: /wood and /iron are disabled on our server as we have persister and working furnaces.

Apps

Xau's HD Texture Fix
Fixes issues with 32x32+ textures, which typically break flowing water, flowing lava, fire and compass animations.

Download: Click Here!

Cartograph
Creates PNG images of your world with various options for the style of image produced. This the program used to create the f13 Server map posted below.

Download: Click Here!

MCMap
Alternative to Cartograph that runs much more efficiently, but lacks the same amount of options.

Download: Click Here!

Texture Packs

Doku's RPG Texture Pack
Gives that old school RPG feel to Minecraft. Works well with the Doku Item Pack (list below).

Download: Click Here!

Soupiest's Texture Pack
This texture pack adds a much cleaner look to Minecraft making it a bit easier on the eyes. There's currently no texture for fire or moving water in this pack, which is a limitation of the game rather than the artist. Here's a picture of the texture pack for comparison:

Download: Click Here!

3D Dot Heroes Texture Pack
A texture pack inspired by the video game 3D Dot Heroes. A bit more detail than Soupiest's texture pack, but not much different. Also has hi-res versions and various other texture tweaks.

More textures can be found here!

Skins

The Skindex - The best place to find a skin for your character in Minecraft. The webpage is just a list of skins with a preview link and the option to directly upload the skin to your Minecraft profile (Click the green up arrow.)

f13 has a dedicated Minecraft server running various mods.

To gain access you must PM me for the IP. The only restriction is that you must be an existing member and not have signed up (recently) just to use the server.

Been mentioned a few times, but not a thread in sight dedicated to this masterpiece of a game. Best description so far of the game is Rogue meets Dwarf Fortress meets 3D Dot Heroes.

i .. if that description is at all true, the alternate description is 'game what will cause many of my friends to lose their jobs and die of malnutrition after the 355th consecutive hour of gameplay'

Played around with it for a while a few days back, but didn't see anything to do.  Can smash the ground, or stack blocks of various colors on it, but I couldn't find anything else.  I mean, the environment looked kind of cool, but I didn't see anything to build or any reason to build it.  What am I missing?

You're playing the Classic version which is simply a builder (As seen here. Turn audio off.) The Alpha version, which is paid, has a lot more to it. Crafting, mining, monsters, dungeons and so on. It's a lot more fleshed out. Take a look at the Wiki to get an idea and acquaint yourself with the Creeper. Evil fucking monsters.

I watch the roomie play it a lot.  I'll probably get it once multi-player is in, so we can make some crazy project together.

Went in yesterday, servers were released today. Though they're insanely buggy, but he said he would be fixing bugs until he leaves for his trip.

Yeah I've been dinking around with this for the past week or so in anticipation of the Survival Multiplayer stage. I fired up a server today at lunch and tried it out - it's still a bit laggy and buggy, and there's notably no monsters, but all the other mechanics seem to work.

I promptly picked a mountain to turn into my doom fortress and began carving out a canal so I can have a nice deepwater harbor.

Nix, your starting area looks way more epic than mine. Bastard.

It'd be kind of neat if someone set up an F13 Minecraft Alpha server though.

I think I've mentioned this before, to samprimary, I said that he should take all that's fun with this game and put it into the legoland game ;)

People have gone full retard on this game, much like dwarf fortress - a guy has already made several adders and is working on a difference engine. There are secret lairs, fire pits, traps, hidden rooms, automated minecart rides, all sorts of cool stuff. I'm keeping an eye on this game for sure.

The first large construction I make is going to be

I haven't seen anyone else show the same kind of landscape I'm getting. I'm really wondering if it had to do with what I was doing during the map generating. I'll have to test it out, but in the mean time I'll take pictures and let you love my beautiful landscape.

Also, yes. A server is needed. Who wants to start this endeavor?

I don't mind the 'discounted preorder to playtest' model at all, I did it for Mount and Blade, but it is sort of annoying there's no way to play anything but the builder without paying first at all. This is the sort of thing I'd really need to try once with the real gameplay, even if it was just a 30 minute time limited trial or something, before I'd pony up.

Bad Things only appear from darkness (either unlit caves or night-time) Some Bad Things really don't like sunlight, others just don't like spawning in it but are otherwise unaffected.

Want coal/iron/gold/etc? Find a cave system.

Note that the current survival multiplayer is pretty light on features and heavy on bugs. Furnaces don't work. There's no savable inventory system yet, so all your stuff vaporises when you log off. There's no mob spawning, friendly or hostile, and there's no day/night cycling yet.

Still, it's a great first step and given how fast Minecraft develops, it should be super-keen by the end of the month.

Unfortunately he's away for most of the month, but hopefully he can squeeze some time into fixing some stuff and giving the basics.

My server is up and running fine, though I obviously can't tell how lag is. If anyone wants to hop on.

There's a few thousand kilometers of ocean between Nix and my box. I had some awful lag loading up - 10-30 seconds, sometimes more. Once the terrain finished loading (after about 5-10 minutes) it settled down a bit, ranging between 1-5 seconds. Not great, but enough to run around and have Nix drop me into pits.

This is going to rock when it's done.

I bought this game just based on some screenshots and descriptions and after playing for about 2 hours (just a few minutes I told myself..) I can already tell it's going to consume me, especially with the rapid pace of development of useful features and content.

Stopped by the F13 server but it was about a 5-10 second lag on everything, so I went and played some single player instead.

This game definitely has most of the features that hooked me on Dwarf Fortress, but with a whole lot better interface. The developer's commitment to open sourcing the code when he's bored with it is even more encouraging. Time to start pondering an architectural masterpiece!

Sorry for the lag guys, hopefully we can get more people in on this and have an actual server up. It was just running on my home box and after awhile the memory usage on the server (~200MB) was about all it could handle.

It looks crude but even the videos sort of suck you into it. If it can harness the human urge to build things along with becoming a platform where lots of people can increase the depth and possibilities of the world I see good things coming.

Using minecraft as a display engine and dwarf fortress for game mechanics sounds like a bit of a no-brainer.

(Edit)

I see It's a solo project rather than a platform.

It's a java app. I tried running it on my web server, but I'm no longer on a dedicated server and they've locked down the max process size. (I can't even get java to tell me what version it is because the memory space is too small).

From what I've read on other forums, the memory footprint is in the 500-700MB range. The real kicker is the bandwidth footprint - you need at least 500kbit/sec of available upstream transfer capacity for an 8-10 player server because the network stream is so unoptimized right now.

That would explain why my server started to slow down at ~9 people.

I found that during the night, If I am not well equipped and armed, I go into my workshop, with stone floors and walls with a door, I play with my materials building shit until daytime. So far nothing has spawned inside my workshop or gotten in as long as I had a real floor, and not just dirt. It could be just my imagination or sheer luck, but that's whats keeping me safe at night.

How bright was your cave-home? Zombies can spawn in poorly-lit areas, even indoors. As a result, my caves shine like the goddamn golden face of Apollo himself at night.

I also tend to make sky castles and terraces because I like to watch the zombies burn at dawn.

I waver on whether or not to leave it on Normal or Peaceful. I hate Creepers. The fuckers spawn in packs of 5 for me, so when I go to get wood I have to do a mad dash, lose them and then start my wood chopping. It's not very constructive especially when I'm anal about replanting trees. Trees don't grow when they get BLOWN THE FUCK UP.

I find that creatures seem to despawn after a short time if you go far away from where they are; you need to go far enough away for the blocks to be unloaded, I think. Also, I don't think it spawns creatures in blocks that are unloaded.

One solution? Very long underground tunnel to a wood farm area.

Alternate solution that I like better? Gigantic mega-greenhouse on top of a mountain, with torches all over the fucking place to keep spawns out. As a bonus, enough torches and the trees will even grow at night.

I like megascale construction projects.
