Proudft and I live in a desert now, it sucks Did our server get upgraded and biomes changed? Our server did, different than the f13 server. We set it to LARGERBIOMES, and, yup, they're big. The explored area of the desert so far has two villages and a mysterious temple, and who knows how far it extends into the distance. Perhaps forever. I believe if a current server's world was generated in 1.2 or better, the new chunks will meld ok, and the emerald ore and special new structures and whatnot will appear in new chunks. But we wanted LARGERBIOMES. (For some reason.)

F13 server hasn't been updated yet. There's a poll that nobody is voting in where I'm gathering feedback on whether or not to start a new world.
Reset it!

Visit the minecraft wiki, if for no other reason than to learn how to make things. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/MinecraftWhen you first start a game, your first priority is to be prepared to survive your first night. Night time is when it gets dark above ground, and the monsters spawn where it's dark. First things first. Harvest a tree. (You'll have to do this by hand). Make some of the wood into a crafting table. Use that to craft at least one pick and one axe. Use the axe to cut down more trees. Use the pick to harvest some stone. You might have to dig through some dirt/gravel to get to the stone layer; you can dig dirt with your hands in the short term. Use the stone to make better tools; a stone pick is faster than a wood pick, plus you need a stone pick to harvest coal and iron. You also want a stone sword. Use the sword to kill some animals. Cows, pigs, chickens, whichever are nearby. You want that meat so you'll have something to eat in the short term. You need coal. If you don't find a big vein of it quickly, don't sweat it; just cut down some more trees. You can make charcoal out of wood. You need coal/charcoal to make torches. You need torches to light up the dark places, especially in/near your dwelling place(s). Mobs spawn in the dark. You need a shelter. This can either be an above-ground structure, or a hole that you dig into the ground, or a cave that you find (and wall off). Alternatively. If you find a sizeable body of water on your first day, you can make a boat, and sail out onto the water at night. Hostile mobs don't spawn in the water. There's not much else to do in a boat but wait, but at least your no-armor-wearing ass won't be getting ganked by creepers in the night.

And after you can survive the nights, priority #2 is a renewable food source. Unless you have it on super-easy-difficulty, you will be starving very soon and if you murder all the nearby animals you are out of luck after devouring them. The main food source is grain, which you can either feed to any pair of animals you didn't murder to breed them, or use directly to construct bread. Nom nom. You grow grain by hitting some of the grass-that-looks-like-grass-stalks until you get seeds (and they don't drop often, just keep trying), making a hoe, hoeing some dirt near some water, planting the seeds and waiting for a while. Because this takes a while (either waiting for animals to grow or grain to mature), you should get started on it pretty quickly. Alternative renewable food sources are fishing (which requires string to make the pole and is kinda boring), and - I suppose - apples from replanting trees, though this is a lot of planting/chopping for a food that doesn't fill you up very much. And mushrooms, though I've never gotten these to work well. Melons are ok, but you have to find the seeds in a chest somewhere. Grain is really the best bet. If you have a bunch of chickens hanging around, if you throw enough of those eggs they drop once in a while you might get enough chickens from them for this to be a viable method of feeding yourself without grain but you have to wait for the chickens to grow just like with cows/pigs and the odds of getting a chicken from an egg are not good. And chickens can be bred with grain anyway. So grow grain.

I had trouble with this the first time I played. In order to harvest a tree, you hold down the left mouse button while standing in front of a tree. Don't click it, hold it down for 2 or 3 seconds and the log will pop out.

The single key to Minecraft civilization, is the skeleton spawner dungeon. If you can find a skeleton spawner, you can make a skeleton farm. This gives you two VERY important things. Bones and Arrows. A infinite supply of bones and arrows.
It's pretty easy to figure out why having a unlimited supply of arrows is good. Kill monster before it gets close to you, the end.
The unlimited bone supply is less obvious... but basically, bones are the basis for almost every renewable resource in Minecraft. You turn Bones into Bonemeal. Bonemeal will instantly grow fresh wheat into ready to harvest wheat. Bonemeal will instantly turn saplings into fully grown trees. Bonemeal will even instantly grow tall grass and flowers for you. You now use your infinite Bones to make infinite Bonemeal to grow infinite wheat. Now with infinite wheat you never go hungry AND you can breed infinite animals. Which you can use for infinite wool/leather/milk/meat etc. Your infinite bonemeal also gives you infinite trees, which you can turn into infinite logs/leaves/apples/charcoal/etc.
You can also Bones to tame some wolves, then use the meat from your other animals to breed those wolves, until you have dozens and dozens of wolves and you declare yourself THE WOLFLORD and hunt down your fellow minecraftians in a brutal and bloody ritual hunt with your new pack.

That is all true, but probably a bit more advanced than you need to get right out of the gate.

I have never seen a skele spawner. Zombies and spiders are the only ones I seem to run into.
I played over LAN with my son on his single player world yesterday. That was very cool, although it was his old world so didn't see anything new because I didn't explore.

1.4 stuff: Mobs can spawn, and use armor and weapons now, some even enchanted. The other thing, is a beacon that can give an AOE buff depending on resources committed to it. Zombies now infect Villagers. 2 new zombie types, baby ( from infected children ) and Villager type ( From infected Villagers ). Zombi now has a cure. Also, not to steal from F13 server, but I also run a server, and we have lots of room for users. PM me for info. Warning: Hard mode/Survival Mode only and Vanilla, we only run one mod, Dynmap. EDIT: If you PM me, make sure to include your Minecraft username. We run a white list. You will need to be added.

Good god, is this the same minecraft i am playing??? All I get is zombies, skeletons with arrows spiders and blowing up things. Zombie babies, hostile villagers, and enchanted items where is all of this stuff...mods??? Only thing I have found is an empty, very hostile world so hostile I have taken to being a dwarf and I spend my time expanding my tunnels, coming out only to look to see if I am nearer to the next mountain or nearer to the Temple I found earlier.
I am almost afraid to ask this but is there loot in the pyramid locations?

Wow, this looks so cool! I've been having fun on MrB's server with villagers. They trade, they breed, they spawn golems. When you trade with them, they add an additional trade. I'm not sure how many trades they will max out at. Despite all the changes, though, I think my favorite part is still sunrise and sunset.

I love the sunrise and sunsets....but now it makes me think of adding another batbox (battery box, basically a power reservoir/repeater) so I can process materials at night...
Technic is pretty awesome. And I really love the mo'creatures, birds and tigers. Though there is one deer/gazelle thing I have to kill when it shows up because it just sounds weird. And initially I was low on iron, so I have a croc skin hat. I go around saying g'day.

Yes, and there is loot in jungle temples as well (along with traps to kill you if you don't figure out the puzzle).

A cool new feature of the latest version is that you can now combine sets of 8 solar panels into arrays that generate as much energy with a single block; I believe the process can be repeated 3 times (8 panels into LV array, LV arrays into MV, MV into HV) making a fully solar powered factory possible now. On my Technic world I power most of my stuff using a combination of Energy Collector/Condenser creating Lava Cells to power Geothermal Generators; for the BuildCraft stuff I run electric engines because managing both fuel and coolant for combustions is too much work.

Nice videos. Wow, there is so much there.
So what exactly is Technic? Is it a mod envelope/facilitator thingie, a collection of mods, or something else?
If mods are used on a server, how difficult is it to switch a mod off if people hate it? I imagine with some mods, you don't _have_ to use the features whereas with others, you're forced to, am I in the ballpark?
How much extra work goes into administering the server with mods vs. without? I'm intrigued, but also wary because I don't want to get spoiled!

That works, I'm still in the early stages and all my stuff is low voltage and I'm just trying to figure out the chains and uses etc. Project after next was a geothermal setup down in the mine so I don't have to lug things to the surface to process them. Next project is some automated mining....experiments... http://www.technicpack.net/ - but the downside is you will get spoiled, and they don't wrap in that village mod I linked any more.

Thanks! Technic is a collection of mods that also comes with it's own launcher/installer, which removes the hassle of futzing with .jar files and also leaves your vanilla Minecraft alone so you can play either at will. I've no experience running servers so I'm not much help there, but you're able to opt out of everything included in Tekkit, Technic's multiplayer version; the two most intrusive mods in Technic are Thaumcraft (with it's ever-spreading tainted areas) and Mo Creatures (house smashing Ogres) but neither of these are incorporated into Tekkit so no worries there. Assuming you don't mind seeing people flying around, shooting lasers, and building factories, or running into new ores throughout the world, you would have no problem with a vanilla-like experience even on a server incorporating Tekkit. Unfortunately as Sky mentioned, the village mod Millenaire is no longer included in Technic due to performance issues. I'm not sure how it ran by itself, but when it was included in the Technic pack I was getting ~10 FPS so I ended up disabling it.

That's a bug resulting from them switching to a new ModLoader; you've gotta delete the mods you don't want by hand at this time. They're found in the \techniclauncher\technicssp\mods folder.
