Japanese paper lanterns?
My little desert town is bordered by a jungle, those trees are pretty wild, I was like 30 blocks high in one with my axe, trunk 4 wide. No wonder they are clear-cutting the rain forest, it just makes sense!

Only issue I have with jungle trees are the drop rate of jungle saplings. It takes 4 to make a big trunk tree, and your unlikely to find 4 in cutting down a 4 trunk tree in my experience. This is unlike every other tree type.

Once I'd gotten 8 saplings from the jungle I took them back to my house and started farming them (so I had two trees to start with). I've been careful to manually pop each leaf block myself (from scaffolding that catches any drops) rather than let them decay, then go for the wood once all the leaves are go ne. So far I've gotten exactly 5 saplings from each of the 6 trees I've harvested this way. And it's definitely slower building the dirt platform and taking it down again.
I also noticed some strange quirks regarding the jungle itself. I took a patch and cleared out all the undergrowth first and found oak trees mixed in with the giants from the original world spawn. Or at least they were single block trunks and the leaves dropped oak saplings. I don't recall what type of wood they yielded. Perhaps there was a biome overlap there?
I tried growing a tree from a single jungle sapling instead of four. It grew up into a single block trunk tree and I got zero saplings from its leaves. RNG or coded that way? I think the wood was jungle type but there wasn't much of it of course compared to the 55-65 you get from a big tree.
Undergrowth leaves don't seem to drop any saplings at all, but the wood is the jungle tree type. Is there any way to grow new jungle undergrowth?
Jungle trees have a large range of possible heights with the tallest double the height of the shortest.
Jungle saplings planted in non-jungle biomes will grow jungle trees complete with dangling vines.

For what it's worth, I've gotten saplings from single-block jungle trees I've replanted. But only a single sapling per tree.

Minecraft Snapshot 12w19a It’s time for the weekly snapshot. We are continuing on the work to separate the client from the server, and have fixed a bunch of stuff related to that transition. We’ve also,
Added cocoa plants to jungles Added a “large biomes” world type Added specific names for the different sandstone and smooth stone blocks

Not only came out on XBLA, but shattered XBLA's sales records and pissed off Fortresscraft's creator at the same time. The most amazing part?
Minecraft XBLA is a relatively ancient build of Minecraft. I've heard it's circa beta 1.6 or so.

I never got around to playing Minecraft, and I have no idea what Fortresscraft is. :) I am surprised it sold so well.

Why?
I haven't played Minecraft, but the appeal of it struck me as the sort of thing lost on the average Xbox player -- especially without the ability to make your own servers. (I realize you're effectively making one if you play solo or Xbox live or co-op, but I sorta assumed there wasn't a lot of customization. If any. Nor persistance. Maybe persistance. Not having played either version, I just sorta guessed at the Xbox feature set). Apparently I was quite wrong about it's appeal. Perhaps I'll finally try it, if I can convince any of my friends to go for it. As soon as crunch time finally ends. In fucking June.

X-box I can sort of see. It's not the adrenal click-fest that will attract the bulk of the console crowd but since it's a java app it probably wasn't that much work to port it. And they'll probably easily sell enough to make the effort profitable.
Mine-craft for mobile I don't understand though.

I am not surprised that it has done so well. It's an amazingly fun game for being so simple. Maybe because it's so simple.
I would guess that console players are a large untapped audience for such a game.

I would have thought there'd be a Jit compiler, but indeed it looks like they re-wrote the whole thing. Wonder if it's going to keep in sync with the PC updates.

The guy seems like a complete asshole, so any articles I can read about his rage are appreciated. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-10-fortresscraft-dev-calls-police-after-suffering-ddos-attack-on-minecraft-xbla-launch-day"The poor (relative) quality and alleged success of Minecraft 360 has confused me," [Adam Sawkins] said. "4J had no budget restrictions, unfettered access to Microsoft, and a solid, world-class game as a template, and still managed to ship a game with a tiny world, no working skins, and no dedicated servers - and even that was a port of a 14 month old snapshot of the MC source base."
He continued: "[Minecraft has] a bunch less simultaneous players than FortressCraft has. And that's just muggins here doing that! I guess it's the old thing though, deliver minimally, promise a lot, and hope people forget; Kinect support went for a wander, and their track record for patching Android and iOS is.... uh... less than stellar."
Sawkins said the true impact of Minecraft's launch on FortressCraft won't be known for a few days, when data updates. But he expects sales will be "quieter".
"I haven't actually gotten any sales figures, but I can safely say that I've lost eight Twitter followers so far. I suspect sales will be quieter for a week, then people will get bored of the novelty of (a very old version of) Minecraft, and hopefully wander back. The fact that he actually keeps track of how many Twitter followers he loses because of this is a perfect example of his mindset.

The funny thing is, of course, that he's actually spot on about 360 MC. It does have ridiculously limited world size and it is a snapshot from 1.6 or 1.7 beta.

I don't remember water (in MP) being so tentative... have they changed the physics model for it?
Removing a block at water level creates all these one tile currents to nowhere that don't equalize and opening a larger space to ocean creates a "hole" in the ocean. I thought it used to spread much more than this.

There was a water physics change that went in a while back that was supposed to fix that, but it ended up causing a bunch of other problems with water, so it got pulled. The little one-tile "whirlpools" can be fixed by placing blocks on the floor of whatever body of water it is until it's just one tile below the surface, which will then remove the whirlpool and you can remove the blocks at your leisure.
Naturally this works best in shallow ponds, lakes, and rivers and not so much the deep ocean.

Yeah, that's what I end up doing. It just feels fairly silly having to "repair" the ocean :/

Yeah, not really practical in my case, it's ocean and in my most drowny area, a crevice at the bottom of the ocean. S'why I've mostly given up my grand underwater rail terminal. Wish they'd put in a scuba craftable.

Part of me wishes they would have tried at implementing that "realistic water" + pumps/pipes mod someone made, but i have no idea how realistic that actually is to expect.

Now that they have the base game done for the Xbox C++ conversion, it will be much easer to move foward bringing it upto the same feature set as the PC version. That is, unless it will upset any XBL restrictions on games, content, and patching. That seems to happen a lot. Moving on: In the new snapshot, this was added: That how it should be IMO! Sadly, its a setting when creating the world initially. Have a video by some dude. Minecraft 12w19a - Cocoa Plants, Large Biomes and More!
