Jeb:

The plan is to build a fresh server API, and then extend it to support client-side modding (in one way or another). We will try to make it easy for bukkit users to convert if they wish to do so, but backwards compatibility is not guaranteed. We will, however, help bukkit to be compatible with 1.2, to avoid having a long gap while you wait for the official Minecraft server to catch up.

So, this is likely to be the last Craft/Bukkit update if I read that right. Meaning all plugins will have to convert, or use another platform.

Personally, I like that Vanilla will have this functionality. I also like the prospects of users downloading mods and texture packs on log in.

Fancy, and helpful. I am so glad Biomes can't shift anymore.

Having vanilla mod support is really great imo. I'm fairly against using mods if there are too many layers of having to dick about to get them working. The more transparent and speedy, the better imo.

I refuse to use mods because they're so fucking annoying atm.  I mean, they're not difficult to figure out, but fuck it, I'm lazy and don't want to.

Only server mod we run is Dynmap. Other than yeah, we have been avoiding mods client and server for those very reasons.

I don't think the little world I play on uses any mods. Though our server god sometimes plays with world generating tools.

A lot of it is down to when our infrastructure really developed. Nobody thought we'd run out of gas in the 50s when we were building the interstates and inventing the suburb.

It really is!

On our original world, the interest really went away once we civilized it entirely. What used to be a dangerous creeper filled forest was now a well maintained trade road with a underground rail system supporting it.

Not sure if you all have seen this, but it's one of the neatest things I've seen in a long time. Convert minecraft objects into 3D printable files.

This week's snapshot is ready for testing, and while the feature list is short, we think it's a very exciting one:

    Added editable books
Wooden half slabs in four colors (and they act as wood instead of stone)
Bug fixing and tweaks, notably about entity collisions, “picking blocks” (creative mode), and chat
    Some other, censored stuff

What does this mean? "Wooden half slabs in four colors (and they act as wood instead of stone)"

Can you retrieve them more quickly using an axe than a pick or something? I didn't know slabs acted like stone instead of wood before.

Turning planks into half-slabs has set them to the oak or 'default' wood color in the past, same as making stairs or doors, so you couldn't color coordinate with full blocks of pine or whatever.  Wooden half slabs have also behaved like stone for axe vs. pickaxe purposes, uniquely among wooden objects, since they were introduced; that bit is more of a bug fix.

Edit: actually, I just realized that I don't know if stairs still set to the default color regardless of input wood any more, haven't messed with that for over a month now.

No wonder axes seemed so inefficient. I hated using wood slabs because of the increase in time to retrieve them when I made a mistake.

Glad it's fixed.

I love the new wood colors. So pretty now.

Minecraft Snapshot 12w18a

by Jens Bergensten on May 3, 2012

Important! This week’s snapshot is extra experimental!

This week we’ve started working on separating the server logic from the client. The purpose of this is both to make it easier for us to add features (since we don’t have to implement stuff “twice”), and also to make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server. In other words, more like how it works on Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

The work has not been completed yet, though, but a snapshot’s a snapshot. However, the game should still run fine, and we’ve also made some other tweaks:

More fixes to silk touch and block picking
    Wooden tools work in furnaces
Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession
    Updated language files
    Etc…

Get the snapshot here:

    Client: http://assets.minecraft.net/12w18a/minecraft.zip* (See below!)
    Server: http://assets.minecraft.net/12w18a/minecraft_server.jar (or EXE)

* The client now comes with both the client-side and the server-side JAR files. The file called “minecraft.jar” should be in your “.minecraft/bin” folder as usual, and the “minecraft_server.jar” file should be in a folder called “.minecraft/server”.

If you havent downloaded Minecraft you can grab it here: www.minecraft.net/download

// The Minecraft Team

Very notable change IMO reported by some:  There are server-side custom texture packs now. Once you enter a server that has a custom texture pack, it'll prompt you if you want to download it.

From the Wiki:

Quote
    New stuff in debug screen:
        Coordinates are now rounded.
"ws", "fs" and "g". g is true if the player is touching the ground.
    Separated server logic and client.
Added optional support for server-side texture packs. When installing this snapshot, any and all texture packs in the "texturepacks" folder will be removed.
More fixes to silk touch and block picking.
    Wooden tools work in furnaces.
Coca Beans are now obtainable in jungle tree leaves.
Villagers spawned from spawning eggs will get a random profession.
Hardcore Mode is now in Multiplayer
    Updated language files.
Splash "Mojang" screen now appears for a shorter time (1 second instead of 3 seconds).

I have colonized a village on a multiplayer server.

I thought that villagers don't trigger creepers.

I keep finding what look like creeper holes in the village at one particular spot.

I have no idea what is causing this. The village is lit completely (I think), but I'm often working in the mines. I don't hear explosions.
