Is there still an f13 server? If not where is everybody playing?

Been playing a sort of "co op" SMP with a friend of mine lately.  Running the server off my machine and just closing it when we are done playing.  Its a pretty fun way to play, we've got some solid defenses set up, but are still a little skittish about nights.  No major building projects yet because we don't really have the resources, but I feel like it really "works" as a sandbox adventure game when playing this way.  Just having another person on skype to chat with while playing makes it a lot more fun than single player for me too.

That's what I've always wanted to play. Shame we didn't end up turning monsters on.

I feel like a persistent server with monsters on could lead to a lot of problems - or at least to a lot of annoyance.   The fact that we are always in the game world when the game world is running means that nothing we are working on is going to get blown to shit by an over zealous creeper without us at least being able to have a shot at stopping it.

So setup a "playtime" for a true f13 SMP server.  Just have it up during peak hrs, say 8pm EST to 2am EST.

Monsters only spawn if players are present. Creepers only explode if they are within 1 square radius to a player. Make your walls 2 blocks thick, you are creeper proof.

They'll still scare the shit out of you when you see one staring at you through a window, but they won't explode  why so serious?

My only real 'issue' with survival, is once you get pretty established, the suspense is gone. I live in a castle with a moat of thorns and fire and have enough supplies to last a nuclear winter. I have to actively go searching for 'survival' situations, purposefully setup a base ten miles from my spawn etc.

I'm hoping that zombie invasion option gets added one day.

The most I could do is run it on a home connection. Not sure the volume of people here that are interested would enjoy that.

We ran one on a FIOS line with 8-10 people and had zero lag, the host also played Wow on the host machine while we were on it. YMMV. (Quad core something, with 4-6 gigs of ram and a video card, standard set up)

Makes me wonder why he didnt add code that'd graduallly deteriorate your health regardless, forcing you to go outside to eat periodically assuming you didnt have enough farmage inside.  Either that or some kind of stamina mechanic that requires a specific element to satiate.

Because that would be both unfun and would fail to solve the issue. You can make bread outdoors with zero danger as long as you have a walled, well-lit compound.

You can grow wheat underground in a tiny box, you can also spawn animals with a little more effort in design.

I've basically created a setup that has every renewable resource available to me, pork, leather, cobblestone, wood, charcoal, wheat, etc... and I have healthy stockpiles of Iron and the other mined materials. I'm even harvesting skeletons for their bones and arrows from a skeleton spawner I've wrangled into a slaughter house. The only thing I don't really have a surplus on is diamond, mostly due to a lack of proper searching on my part.

I keep debating converting my fortress into obsidian, because it isn't as impenetrable as it could be yet, Obsidian is TNT proof I think right? Needs more arrow turrets too.  Ohhhhh, I see.

Well, it is a sandbox game, I'm sure you could go for a more adventure based style if you want to.  Simply go on a grand dungeon delving adventure and leave behind safety, even start a new game if you want where you don't spend more than 1 night in the same "house" and just keep on truckin.   The game doesn't really seem "meant" to be played any specific way, so I say, experiment and see what is fun!

It's still fun to build stuff and etc, but that original "oh gawd run its night time zombies aiee  ACK!" feeling gets replaced with "damn zombies in my trash cans again  Ohhhhh, I see.".

Even if I stripped myself of all resources, I can't remove the knowledge now. I can build myself a proper hobbit hole in like 30 seconds, have tea and crumpets on the stove in 3 minutes.

The only things that still give me some pause, are creepers, only because they are such magnificent bastards. It isn't an accident that they seem to always sneak up on you; they plan ambushes, its glorious  Heart.

I'm converting my micro-fortress (well, mine entry really) into obsidian. Because I'm trying to mine through the middle of a lava flow which is a rather interesting challenge (3 deaths so far, plus one boat elevator failure) and I have to do something with it. I'd also like to play more with mine-carts but iron seems pretty rare.

Also thought people had been digging huge random holes but realize that's actually game "chunks" sometimes failing to load. Quite a good way to scout for ore deposits :)

How often do game changes require a server reset? Not often I'm guessing by the amount of stuff that has been built.

Probably if he adds new ores and such you won't have them on already-existing maps.

I sorta like the one on thinkgeek a bit better, though it'd be better if it said local 127 instead of local 128.

Well, I agree it was getting out of hand, and I actually was in favor of a reset (and am still glad we did), but  my point was I don't think the server would've broken if we didn't reset after the patch.  I may be wrong on that though.

Main reason behind the reset was there was so much stuff by the spawn that the game was a slideshow and there were huge lag issues. IIRC anyways.

Yeah, this and there was a load bug for awhile that was causing world fall through and crashes if too much was present around the spawn.

You're assumption is right though, Malakili. It would have worked perfectly fine after the patch and I think we dismissed that reason pretty early on as it became apparent some people just wanted a clean slate.

Seems to have been rebuilt a fair extent from whenevr it was you wiped it. Just jumped on for the first time and I had to run for five minutes to find an area to dig where I didn't feel like I'd be encroaching on someone.

We're pretty spread out.  I'm 17 minutes down western highway.  There are maybe 6-7 people out west too (or were).  so there's a lot of open space

The funny thing about creepers is, they aren't nearly as bad as everyone (including myself) makes them out to be.  They will blow a hole in your one-block-thick wall, IF you piss them off or get in melee range for too long.  Most of the time they really aren't that troublesome though.  Carry a bow and arrows around with you and they are a minor nuisance at worst unless they catch you by surprise.

Which is what makes them marvelous little creations, since they are amazingly good at it for being such simple things. You ever watch them plan an ambush? If there is more then one of them in the same area, they'll split up and take you from different angles.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I remember watching a video of some guy mining in his very own mine, near a waterfall. He was chattering away, until there was suddenly this hissing sound. He turned 180 and literally screamed like a little girl, before he got blown to bits. It was glorious. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I was building a fort around a little grotto I had found.  Really cool with a waterfall into an open cave, and I just happened to have dug up from my tunnel into the pond which had formed there.  The water flowed into the back side and I left it a block entrance into the fort through my wall.

So I was outside, cleaning up around my fort when a creeper falls out of a tree.  I happened to get trapped between a tree, the flowing water, and the fortress wall.  That was an interesting mess, let me tell you...  He could have blown up just about anywhere else and I'd have been okay with it, but he ruined a work of art.  I was sad and tried to rebuild it as best I could.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!
