I need a good strategy game, and am looking for a specific style...
I am looking for 2D, turn-based, tile-based, strategy, war games with individual unit control(1 tank = 1 tank, 1 plane = 1 plane, etc). Preferably as little political and manufacturing as possible, but if the actual combat tactics are good enough, I will put up with it. More specificly, I am looking for something that takes into account terrian you are traveling over, affecting the distance traveled per turn.
Do any titles spring to mind?
Many thanks.

You should get Advance Wars 1 and 2 for Gameboy Advance. They're quite fun.

Axis and Allies: Iron Blitz may be along the lines of what you're looking for.
And while it contains some building and diplomacy options, Alpha Centauri is still one of the best strategy games around.

Rome Total War? Combat Misson seems the best defination. Closest thing to a tabletop game. Steel Panthers is free these days with HUGE combat lists of pretty much everything. Empire: Internet Deluxe edition just got released last month.

Massive Assault is pretty good too.
Its 3d and not 2d tile based, but it just makes it all pretty when you realize your long range missles can shoot over the mountains because the enemy is moving their convoy right by it to get to your base..

I'll second that. GalCiv is quite good.

I 2nd Massive Assault. Fantastic game that went under the radar, probably because it was buggy as hell. Hex-based tactics. The sequel, Domination, is coming out shortly. Demo http://www.massiveassault.com/demo.php">here.

Battleground:Ardennes, if you can find a copy of it. In my opinion an almost flawless way to experience the final campaign of WWII.

Take a look at the Combat Mission games. They are 3d rendered, but very similar to the Avalon Hill games (i.e. Panzer Blitz, Squad Leader, etc.)

Age of Wonders II, and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. Excellent fantasy TBS that are generally recognized as the closest things we'll have to a sequal to Master of Magic.
By the way, if you can run DOS games, Master of Magic never gets old.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Well, it pretends to have 3D features, but not in a serious way. Should be very cheap these days, it's on various budget labels out there. For me, that is the be all and end all of strategy games. (Note: Despite the name, this is a "Brian Reynolds design". Not that it matters much. Except this is the REAL sequel to Civ II.)

Matters a lot to me. Imo Brian Reynolds > Sid Meier. Civ II, Colonization, Alpha Centauri, the guy has done the best. All with Sid's name on 'em ;)
Can't go wrong with Alpha Centauri, or GalCiv, or Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (best HD support in a TBS). All three are must-own imo, but then, I love TBS.

Alpha Centauri and its expansion Alien Crossfire even runs well on a tired old Mac laptop, and it is a great game. Just as old, and almost as good is Imperialism II. I revisit both from time to time.
Axis and Allies and Korsum Pocket fit the bill.
