CCP_Hammerhead is giving a live chat that I'm looking at on the other screen. Should be quite interesting.

I'll come back here after and say a bit more but highlight so far is insider information that they may be having a few beers later to celebrate Eve turning 7 today. Who'd have thought it?

Tried to shoot in a question about gridload, but it seems they're squarely set on planetary interaction. I interpret that as "we don't have a solution so we'll ignore it, and fleet fighting is still going to be a lagbath."

I'm pretty sure no one at CCP is going to say much in the media about anything other than PI. It's the new draw. It will solve EVERYTHING. Ignore the elephant in the corner.

I asked whether CCP employees have access to a gym facility or if they get a free gym membership. It was also ignored. It didn't get ansewered but Hammerhead is a scrawny dude so I'm speculating "No."

I thought it was a very good interview. He's a likable fellow and gave out a reasonably good amount of information.

The lag fixes are coming in the summer, not with Tyrannis but at some point after. They want to know what PI is doing to their game as distinct from what the lag fixes do so they are separating them out.

I've organised the information from Strategy Informer LIVE's interview with Eve Online's Lead Game Designer, Noah "Hammerhead" Ward into a timeline.

Original transcript should be going up here soon:

Lag fixes are always 'coming'.  No plan to do anything about blob warfare either.  Hey, fantastic!  Oh and no walking in stations until at least 2011.

Lag should be mission #1.

IMHO Incarna will consist of more dev hours than it will use. I remember the idiocy of running from my ship to the mission giving critter in Earth and Beyond. Total waste of time. Incarna will end up making a few women who want to cyber in voice very very wealthy and not a whole lot else.

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

Going to disagree.  They do need an autolaunch button so you do not need to run for the hanger, but other than that it will draw new people and give bored vets who cannot be bothered with 5 hours of hauling and fitting something to do.

If people are going to get easy access to resources wouldn't that make ore prices fall to the floor?  Miners are going to be pissed.

Is this designed to make ship building cheap and get more players fighting?

Oddly, price variations happen most strongly in T2. I'll dig out the average price of BS 4 years ago for comparison tomorrow, but it's not that much different to today.

Battleship prices are much, much lower today than they were 4 years ago. Dominix prices have fallen almost 50 percent since then. And once insurance payouts are adjusted I expect to see ship and mineral prices drop even further.

Let me expand on what he said about lag. It was a bit nebulous which is why I didn't include it in the bullet point list.

I'm doing this from memory as the transcript doesn't seem to be available yet.

He said this summer we will see massive changes that should really improve things. He couldn't comment in detail as he's not a coder. However players should see a huge improvement, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

He also explained that they wanted to roll these fixes out separately to the PI so they could assess server loads etc better.

He also said that the lag problems were a consequence of game design being almost too good (I think he was referring to the Doomsday change which encourages blobbing).

My take on it: they have technical fixes, they aren't 100% sure what they will do, they're going to dick around on the Live server then see what happens and they think it will probably make things a lot better.

If it works participation will rise which will stress the servers which will cause lag all over again. Ho hum. There seems to be no chance that they will take a different direction in game design to discourage blobbing though, they like the big epic fights and believe their players do too.

From what you're saying it sounds like the fix they have involves changing some core component of the server software, and they don't want to implement it until summer.  Which is fine, except their game will be shit until then.  Not that PI is all that great by itself, either.

Incarna in it's full form won't be ready by Winter.

Right, the lag can be blamed on the game design being too much of a success.

Do you have any plans to combat 'blob' warfare?

6:46 CCP_Hammerhead

We don't really want to take 'blob' warfare out of EVE. It's all about epic battles and having thousands of ships fighting each other. You can't get that experience elsewhere. So instead of trying to remove blobs we want to fix the lag.

The rest of it is about planets and dust.  Planets = you can mine on ANY planet ANYWHERE, passive income etc.  Dust they are not saying much about.

Bullshit. They had huge fights probably bigger than today before Dominion and lag was manageable.

ANYWAY, getting back to my earlier topic. These are the Battleship prices from EON issue 02, winter 05/spring06. Average Price across all rejoins. Obviously I don't know how they got this but I have no reason to doubt its accuracy.

Megas are in the low-70s and I see a Dom as cheap as 42 at this moment.

From casual observation I would say battleship prices have dropped 20%+ across the board.

I see no point in returning to the game until large battles are possible. Planets and In Game Walking will not do it.

I believe that ship prices are currently just at the edge of where it's profitable to blow them up for the insurance. As soon as Domis hit about 42,000,000 and Megathrons drop below 72,000,000 the ships all get bought up by a single person.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when insurance is adjusted. Right now the market is artificially supporting a lot more ship builders than it's going to be able to handle without the ship exploders buying the excess ships.

Ambulation/Incarna got pushed back so far and often now, they might aswell push it over the cliff.

EVE (inactive): Deakin Frost -- APB (fukken dead): Kayleigh (on Patriot).
