How'd you spell murloc right in the thread but not in the subject? *wink* (and while I'm at it anyway: "wait". The e is both silent... and invisible).
Otherwise, just a rumor for now but I'd love to see them take on this genre. It can't be a straight up FPS (cannabalistic), and I'd argue the distance between MW2 and a full MMOFPS is not as much as older FPSes were. But just having them consider this, and with a new IP to boot, would be nice. I've wanted a serious company with a serious budget and good talent to try MMOFPS since Planetside.

Information obtained (which are from someone inside, near that project) sustain that the next MMO from Blizzard would be in part a FPS. It would be in a futuristic universe. That will be a clear change from MMORPG like World of Warcraft.
In this new MMO, each players would have 2 "life": It's first would be a sort on Sims Online, big hub with social interactions and the possibility to connect yourself to a second life. That second life would be the combat part in subjective view (third person perhaps).
I dunno, sounds good to me, at least. "Sci-fi + FPS + Blizzard" sounds good to me. Though I'm not nuts about the way "massive" is separated from what I assume would be most of the gameplay.

Yea, when I read another article about this the other day, I got a Huxley vibe from it. Which is not good. But unless this turns out to be some new group like Blizzard Austin, I feel safe getting excited about it for now.

This strikes me as unlikely, but frankly, speculating about Blizzard products is a waste of goddamn time.

Me too, but I loved Planetside. So if this turns out to not be a rumor, I hope, they took some notes.

They're going to combine my two favorite games, Quake and Sims? This just has to fail or there's isn't enough evil in this world.

It won't fail. It'll either be focused into one specific type of game, or it'll get cancelled.

Modern Warfare may have the progression thing going on but don't forget MW's design is all about densely packed maps. I'm actually interested in Infinity Ward's design approach being applied to an MMOFPS because aside from Planetside caves noone has made condensed worlds (and the caves sucked). If the two companies are collaborating on the project I'm looking forward to the FPS aspect. If they are working on separate projects then I'm only interested in how Blizzard treats the socializing and SIMs aspect.

OP is assuming its somewhat of a design-goal of eve to make players happy. this is however not the case.

It makes perfect sense that Blizzard isn't planning something that would compete with WoW (although, I guess, Wow will be pretty aged by the time this is released).
But MMOFPS? Something tells me that is too niche for Blizzard's taste.

I'm pretty sure we can take a link to the mmorpg.com's message board, which in turn links to Blue's News (which I've never heard of), which is getting it's info by using Google Translate on a French site called NoFrag, as a solid source of information.

Blue's News has been around since the Quake days. Those were the days when gaming news came from Blue's, Shacknews, Redwood's, etc.

Perzactly. "MMO" doesn't need to mean half the shit that people think it means. I just don't want another Huxley if they can do it. I liked the progressive maps from that one TF2 scenario where you capture zones chasing some sort of bomb thing. That could work here. Server (or zone/area) resets are a foregone conclusion. It can't fail if it's bullshit.
Just keep glossing over this people. We'll happily give advice on PC games to someone who's already been banned, so it shouldn't be surprising we'll talk about a game that's never going to launch

Maybe.
2010 is seeing a huge number (comparatively) of MMOFPSs launch. Blizzard launches theirs in (say) 2013 and all the best bits of the genre will have been refined.
Would also work well with a cash shop / microtrans model.
While we're making stuff up: Blizzard to release browser-based MMOFPS in 2013 that will be F2P and available on the PS4 and Xbox Revolution.

It's likely bullshit, but come on, we need something new to discuss. Otherwise we'd have to go back to bitching about the derative nature of DIKUs.
...which this is likely to be some sort of anyway.

Isn't APB basically a MMOFPS too? Or at least third-person shooter. I don't know, other than the shiney character creator I haven't kept a close eye on it.
Also, this sort of idea makes sense over all, regardless of whatever merit the speculation has. Something other than typical MMORPG seems logical for Blizzard to go toward with their next MMO. A shooter works pretty well with the StarCraft universe too, if they decided to go that way.

APB is only MMO as far as character persistence. 100 players per server isn't exactly that MMO.

I can't quite imagine how they hope the whole "social interactions" aspect is going to tie into it. The whole thing reads like summary for Dark Days Are Coming only made more vague

Oh no you did not just do that. It's MMO enough. PS had bigger battles than that, but how often did that happen? 100 is plenty more than 6x6 MW2, which if this ever launches, will be the basis of comparison.

They tried to make one. But they canc'd it before it ever saw the light of day. That was Swinging Ape and Nihilistic making a 3rd person shooter - Starcraft Ghost. It was "canned" which doesn't mean much but I really can't see them repurposing that stuff for this.

Yeah, I actually got to play the demo at E3. Wasn't bad, the artwork was pretty cool in game, but there wasn't really anything terribly unique or fun about it. Which is why Blizzard probably canned it.

Is it? What's the scoop? I haven't been paying attention I guess. Possible MMOFPS launches in 2010 include: Huxley APB Global Agenda Earthrise The Agency Dust 514 (maybe, but perhaps not) Both the MMO and FPS definition for various titles might be debatable, but its an area that is pushing forward after years of being backburnered. There are a few other examples that launched badly in 2009 - CrimeCraft, Battlefield Heroes - plus Fallen Earth, but it's interesting that after years of nothing in the area, suddenly a slew of MMOFPS titles are scheduled for launch (although they may delay, of course, but both The Agency and Huxley really have to launch or die at this stage). Cue: f13 debate on what a MMOFPS actually is and how none of the above titles meet the definition.

Global Agenda and Huxley are most certainly MMOFPS. The Agency and APB from what I've seen are third person shooters, but there's no reason to label them differently.
Also, none of them as far as I know have as many people in one area as MAG.
So, shrug, baby steps I suppose.
