Look, I hate the sims. I couldn't stand playing any iteration of it for more than an hour because it was mind numbing shit even not having actually paid for it I still felt I got ripped off. That said, there's no way you can't put in in any top ten list because it not only added a different playstyle but introduced gaming to thousands who had never even thought about it.

WoW is much the same in that regard and while you may not like it, may not even think it's a good game it is now almost a household name and whether you like it or not, that does count for something. I'm not saying popularity should be the stick measure by here but I certainly believe that it is one factor.  I have friends that think the icewind dale games were the best thing since sliced bread...they are wrong of coursebut personal opinion no matter how strong for or against can only go so far.

Also I don't think it's been said but I'd put Okami in the top ten for not only beautiful artwork but a fun playstyle that while not wholly original was very refined and a wonderful story, definitely one of the best action-rpg's ever.

Rome: TW, Deus Ex, and Diablo II would all be on my list. Granted Diablo 2 barely makes it into this decade, but whatever.

That's part of the problem.  Saying something is the "best game" is pretty vague.  Does that mean that the most people liked it (I.E. sales popularity)?  That it was the most innovative/unique?  That it was very influential and widely copied?  Or is it just a list of games the guy making the list had fun with (I suspect this is the correct answer, and also the most useless to everyone else).

I mean, to say that something like Braid is better than, say, Unreal Tournament 2k4...  How would you even make that kind of a judgement?  They have almost nothing in common which allows you to say that one is better than the other, unless you're going to start making general judgements like "side scrolling games are better than FPSes" which you can't make without ending up with a list of fifteen side scrollers.

If I made a top 5, I'd just leave it at personal biases. A top 15 would be even handed.

Twin Snakes.. Which is sorta cheating. Maybe. I don't know.
Beyond Good and Evil
Shadow of the Colossus
Deus Ex
Marvel vs Capcom 2

Valkyria Chronicles.. I want to put you there. Sorry.

Guys, its the AV Club. Do you read their movie and music lists? They're not exactly striving for Everyone Must Agree consensus in general.

FF12 should be Shadowhearts: Covenant.
This right here. I evangelize about Shadow Hearts 2 to everyone I can, and those who end up playing it thank me later.

Not yet. I've only made that joke once.

The only thing I can think I did "wrong" was bump Valkyria off. Well, besides just making a list to begin with. Ohhhhh, I see.

Why haven't we created a "Best of..." list for the worst Best of lists?

If you come across any more "Best of" lists, post them in this thread.

Best 30 Games of the Decade - Damn Lag
Best 20 Games of the Decade - Paste Magazine

Might wait until some of the bigger sites release their Best of the 2000s lists, but this is a solid idea.

Annoyingly I've just seen that System Shock 2 came out right at the very end of 1999, because I was going to put that in any list over BioShock. Deus Ex should certainly be there.

Actually, I just googled "best breasts of the decade" after seeing your post to see if anything would come up because I thought it would be funny to make a joke about but too stupid for anyone to have actually put together... I really should have less faith in my fellow man.

Top 10 Games of the Decade - Yahoo! Games (complete with 2 Wii titles)
Top 50 Games of the Decade - Destructoid
Best Video Games of the Decade (by Category) - Metromix Atlanta (reading the winner's list, I'd almost swear the judges started playing games in 2007)
Top 25 Games of the Decade - Gamezone
The Top Ten Video Games of 2000-2009 According to My Husband - Associated Content (in fact, there are a bunch of these lists on there, but this wins for title alone)
7 Gayest Offbeat Video Games of the Decade - Bilerico Project

Awesome list that compares the highest critically rated titles vs the best selling titles and finds very little overlap.

Best breasts of the decade - Maxim

If you want, you can combine breasts and video games for a "Sexiest Game Babes List". But why would you want to?  why so serious?

Funny thing about that metacritic list of the last decade.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for the Dreamcast WOULD be on my list.

It's probably the best "sports" game ever made.

That Metacritic vs. alleged sales rank list is the only interesting one I've clicked on from this thread so far.

SSX Tricky was my favorite of the SSXs I played (was 3 the last one? If so I played alla 'em). I had a total crush on the hippie dude. I think Sims 2 was a better game than The Sims (and Sims 3 has potential to be better than Sims 2, but isn't yet), but I suppose they felt The Sims was TEH BREAKTHRU or whatever (I didn't read the actual article). I also prefer Rock Band over Guitar Hero 'cause I like playing with other people a loooooot (although I admit I haven't played the band-sized versions of GH, although at that point I imagine it's a playlist preference than anything game-wise?).

The Sims deserves a spot on the "Most Important Games of this Decade" but not a "Best Of."

Most of the time people make lists, they do it wrong simply because words are hard.

Very misguided. Dushku on the list...seriously?

OP is assuming its somewhat of a design-goal of eve to make players happy.
this is however not the case.

Well, The Sims deserves a spot on MY "Best of" because I played the fuck out of it. But I agree, a lot of the time "Important" gets confused with "Best."

Spending a lot of time with a "game" doesn't make the game itself "fun."

The Sims, in a vacuum, is a terrible game - it's a poorly organized badly hacked together sandbox without any sand. I can see what people like doing in it and I suppose if I made a "Top Ten Most Cathartic Games" it would be on there.

On one hand, you can't really do 10 'best' games without backloading on the most recent titles since (in theory) newer titles build on and improve on the older titles. But then it comes down to defining what 'best' is. Is The Sims better than The Sims 3 because it came first and started it all, or is the The Sims 3 better than The Sims because it is more polished? Plus people have an inherent bias towards their most recent experiences (immediacy effect iirc) so the majority of titles released post 2007 stand out more readily than those that were released before 2004.

And then there is comparing 'best' games across platforms, including handhelds. Destructoid tried, but I think doing a Top 50 list is cheating to a degree since you can make people happy that it just appeared on the list. Make a list long enough and you don't have to exclude anything.

I'd rather see a "10 Best and Most Important Games" list because that that requires a little less handwavium to explain why a title should appear on a list - it was good but also actually important to video games. Gears of War is seen as a good game by a lot of people, but it is an pretty unimportant title in the grand scheme of things.

Civilization IV is arguably the best video game ever made.  Any top-15 list without that game on it is shit for that reason alone.  If you have a different opinion, your opinion is wrong.

I have a different opinion of it being the "best ever", but it deserves a place on a list like that sure. I've been playing the same basic thing since I was a little kid, and I still haven't gotten bored.
