New music discovery. A progressive rock band called 'Haken'. This song starts out so damn happy, but the second half is darker. It's great: Haken - Streams'Sylvan' is a prog band I've seen recommended in quite a few places. So, I gave them a try and I really dig this song so far: Sylvan - One Step Beyond

Sony is going to quit making the Walkman. Also the end of the Technics turntables but I think that Panasonic. The turntable one was somehow more surprising.

No more Technics 1200/1210s?
Even though quite a few DJs I know have switched to MP3 mixers, it still is suprising, they are the defacto standard for DJ'ing, and more or less achieved design perfection on release. The first batch still work after 30 years+ of constant use, the second hand market has always been high and new ones still sell, despite the price hardly dropping in decades. The second hand vinyl market (house/hardcore/jungle/drum and bass) is still strong too.
It is Panasonic, btw

They stopped making the 1200s?
I hope they don't stop making replacement parts. I still need to fix the tonearm on one of mine and get some new headshells!
EDIT: fuck, just saw they are stopping making parts entirely for them too. Going to have to spend some moolah as soon as I get a job it looks like :(

The new Ghostland Observatory album comes out tomorrow. You can preview it here at Amazon. Edit: And FYI, it sucks. Meh.

I've never heard of Unblack Metal, we always called it White Metal. But good job otherwise. Several of those categories are basically my album collection when I was a young musician.

I pulled out all my old Charlatans UK albums yesterday. They were seriously talented dudes. I can only handle so much of it though, before I get tired.

Also, check out his cover of Cash's cover of Hurt.

That's one reason why I don't hit up our local open mic. It can be great, but there are between 3-6 regular acts that are about that quality. The SAME 3-6, and it gets old fast. Also, why does everything in my city start at 10pm on Thursday night? These people need to get jobs. Thirdly, hanging out in a bar when you don't drink is boring as fuck.

The irony of having the word MUSIC hanging over their heads is strong. The bass player was exactly 20% of what was wrong with that band. But he was the first 20% responsible.

Seriously. When my friend's band plays, once they are done I book it. Sitting around not drinking is boring when everyone else is or is too drunk to carry on coherent conversations.

Can anyone recommend some good less-mainstream Alternative bands?
Currently listening to The XX and thinking of picking up some Arcade Fire (not exactly indie) and Middle Class Rut.

Wait, we are linking shitty covers now? You asked for it:
These guys used to be great before they sold out... If they didn't suck so bad, I'd say there might be a monitor issue, they can't seem to hear each other. But...yeah. Some time I need to upload some tunes from the kid who I bought this house from. They used to practice here in this living room. So, so, so bad.

Arcade Fire is great. Check out Tame Impala... Innerspeaker is their latest. Hard to get here in the states in physical format, but it's like $7.00 on Itunes or the like. One of the best albums I've listened to in a long time. I always extol the virtues of the Flaming Lips, if you're not familiar with them (but you should be..). Their last three albums at least are a series of magical experiences. If you want to get more folk, Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper, Band of Horses, Bon Iver. Older Mercury Rev albums are great (See you on the other side). Early Verve albums (Storm in Heaven, EP, Bsides) are, well, excellent. Mainstream at this point, but it never seems that way because I've been listening since 2000... but Sigur Ros is awesome. Explosions in the Sky, also.
