Yeah, the new Soulfly album is good. You might also be happy to hear that Sepultura released a new one this month as well (also on Spotify) and it's pretty damn good too. And in the last two months, Spotify has added the new Motorhead (Aftershock) and Death Angel (The Dream Calls for Blood). All 4 are good albums.

Ok, screed time. If you don't want to read the rantings of an old man, skip this post. You have been warned.

I caught My Bloody Valentine at one of their two shows here in NYC. They were just as loud and distortion-driven as I remembered them being the last time I saw them back in '92. Not a bad show by the band, all told. The crowd, however...

This was the first live, non-jazz show I'd been to in almost 10 years. Shit's changed at rock shows. The opening band, Diiv put on a decent show, but you wouldn't be able to tell by everyone staring at their phones and tweeting and Facebooking shit the whole time. What the fuck? Are you there for the show or to rub it in your friends' faces that you're at the show and they're not? We had a way of doing that, it was called buying a fucking concert shirt and wearing it the next time you hung out.

Now, granted, I did Instagram a couple of video snippets from the MBV set, but that's because I thought the visuals were hot shit. Everyone else seemed to be half-assing it. Except of course for the douchebags that pre gamed a little too hard and were up front yelling, "destroy me with your sound" at the band.

Like I prefaced this whole thing, maybe I'm getting old. Maybe it's not the shows that have changed but me instead. Maybe I was just pissy that a good 75% of the crowd that night were probably five when MBV last toured. The only kid that got any respect from me was some 25-year-old wearing a Ride (the band, not the snowboard) shirt.

Alright, this is where it gets deep...

So, I look back to that summer and fall of 1992. I slept on a friend's floor and got a job at a Starbucks in Seattle for a month so I could go to shows and catch a bunch of Seattle bands back in their heyday and then chased Lush across the goddamn country hitting half a dozen lotsapalookas shows and catching Alice in Chains at a secret show in Hollywood. That was how you rocked the fuck out. No twitter, no Facebook, no instagram, just showing up, getting hammered, rocking the fuck out and if you were lucky, hanging out with the bands at random bars after the shows.

Maybe I'm an old fucker just raging against the dying of the light, maybe not. But it's not the goddamn same.

It's not the same.  I almost got into a fight a few months ago at a Godspeed You! Black Emperor show because the fuckwit next to me decided to chat through the entire show. We saw Jack White last year and he straight up asked everyone in the audience to put their phones away, telling everyone they'd have photos and videos of the show on his site the next day.  Did anyone listen?  Nope.

Our 'social' networking makes us unable to be alone, to just shut the fuck up for awhile and process things.  I'm not going to say this generation sucks, or get off my lawn.  However, I will say that I don't like the way things are now.  I've found my answer to be only going to metal shows... you can't hear people talking and anyone holding a phone is likely to get it knocked out of their hand.

On a side note, totally jealous you got to see MBV.  I skipped it because I mistakenly thought they were playing a venue I didn't like.

I once attempted to hit on Miki from Lush.  As expected, it did not end well for me. :)  It was a small show around '95.  Nobody showed and I got to chat with the band for a long time after they played.

I hit on Miki hard and we ended up being kinda friends for a while. We got hammered a few times together. I knew I didn't have much of a shot even then, but I was 21 and fearless back then, so why the fuck not?

I watched a woman record a Jack Johnson song, upload it to youtube and then WATCH IT WHILE HE WAS STILL ON STAGE PLAYING. TWICE. I watched all this because frankly it was more entertaining than Jack Johnson.

I decided after Farm Aid that dammit, I'm tired of festivals. And I'm honest with myself that despite the changes in youth culture, I've changed, too. I no longer get shitfaced (though even when I did I wasn't a tool like some of these drunkholes). So being around a shitload of drunks is not fun when I'm having A Beer. A lot of it is the festival/arena show, lots of LCD partytards showing up.

Because we've seen Primus in a theater and I'm pretty sure half the place was tanked, the other half was stoned and the third half was tripping face and it was the nicest crowd I've been around other than old fart shows. People watched the fucking show, sang along, and had a good time without being retarded. Even my fiancee enjoyed it so much we've seen them a couple times now.

I was big into moshing as a kid, when I hit the pit for Anthrax last year (it was pretty awesome), there were dads at the edge shielding their kids. In dad's defense, how cool is it to get to see reunited Anthrax and the kids get to see As I Lay Dying or whoever the fuck (they were great too, btw, killer lineup at Mayhem last year).

Actually...you might be onto something, HB. Mayhem was a giant festival at the same place as Farmaid, a ton of kids there, the same 24oz beer serving size (what the fuck) and everyone was so much more relaxed and friendly than farmaid and it's Jack Johnson/Dave Matthews entitled twat crowd.

I honestly thought at one point Niel Young was going to get off stage and shove his fist down someone's throat.

Get off my lawn! Argh! Rock Out

ps: I got drunk with Larry Lalonde when I was 17 at a bar in Syracuse during a blizzard when we were snowed in when he played in Possessed.

I take it that is with Floor singing, it is nice to have someone with powerful pipes on vocal duty again.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

I just wanted to post to say I'm insanely envious of Surlyboi's early 90s lifestyle. Being 13-14 at that time, and living in the UK, I had no chance to do that sort of shit. But goddamn, hanging out with Lush? I think I actually physically hate you. My jelly is set.

Speaking of Alice in Chains, just nabbed tickets to a spring show at the Landmark Theater. Mixup with the url means I only got 13th row. Blah. The new singer is really good, as is the new material.

Also considering seeing Crue again (I just saw them last year) because it's their legally binding final tour.
