Circling the drain - consoles

Quote
In-game ad house Double Fusion has brought dynamic, in-game video advertising to the PlayStation 3 game Wipeout HD across North America and Europe, the company said Monday.

This is being done post-release, on number of titles that originally sold without adds.

More proof that control over gaming platform leads to all kinds of asshatery.  Unless this get sued out of existence console games will quickly spiral down to TV-like 17min of adds per hour.

Are you not even remotely interested in the fact that bunch of titles got sold without adds, then got bait-and-switch patched with adds? ... or did you already accept this as inevitable?

I'd be more willing to discuss it if it weren't part of your bizarre theory that consoles are in some sort of death spiral.

They aren't in any bigger "death spiral" than The Jerry Springer Show... just getting targeted toward lowest common denominator audience that even you might not want to be part of.

Perhaps better term - spiraling toward trash entertainment.

Nothing prevents PC game makers from doing the exact same thing.

Different issues. Ad revenue funds free-to-air TV and helps reduce the cost of pay-tv program development. In-game advertising is currently just a way to earn a few extra bucks for the developers. It depends about how much developers / publishers start to depend on ad revenue to develop / maintain games. Thus far, the actual returns haven't been good and online ad sellers like DoubleFusion have been making significant losses.

Also, it's been done: CoH/V launched without ads, had them implemented, currently they are MIA. Reason? Probably that no advertiser cares about a piddly 100k audience in a superhero MMO unless they are selling superhero-related products (and, funnily enough, few do).

Don't panic.

If consoles are circling the drain, PCs are clawing at the drain trap.

The ads have already been pulled due to the load time increases they were causing.

These ads have nobly destroyed, not consoles, BUT THEMSELVES!

If only Sinij had not poisoned our perceptions we might have embraced them as the heros they are were.

That's the most sensationalist bullshit headline I've seen in a long, long time.

Also, it's "modding."

Oh, and you can't be arrested for just modding. I'd know, given one of my previous employers.

I can't say I even notice the goddamn ads in Burnout as I go flying by at pans-shitting miles per hour.  If you have a billboard in a game, feel free to tart it up with whatever ads would've been there in the real world.  I'll ignore it just the same.

They can still go after you with a civil case if you are modding (and circumventing copy protection) for your own personal use.

This guy was presumably selling modded systems and then it becomes a criminal offense.
