I also am turning 40 in a little under 3 weeks time. I plan to get drunk and stoned and eats lots of nice seafood with my family. But I'm always open to more exciting ideas    |

How much are you looking to spend and are you in a committed relationship? Have to answer those two before I can give a suggestion. |

Naps rule. I shall print out and laminate the awesome pictures nap pic forthwith    I'm honestly really not bothered about 40 anyway, I don't get people who get stressed about it, it's just a number. |

I just turned 36, and I'm not too happy about it, I'll admit.  Maybe it's because I don't take naps.  They always have the opposite effect for me...they rarely refresh me and always leave me more tired than I was in the first place. |

I'm 37 and I run on lack of sleep Cyrrex. Naps are for when yer dead or just can't resist it. Like when you are reading.
I'm in Sky's camp though, I enjoyed being young, but not as much as I enjoy being now.

My plan was to gather as many of my friends as possible in Vegas for my 40th (Feb, 2010). Then I knocked my wife up and knocked that plan into a cocked hat. We may still try to talk her parents into coming along and babysitting while we paint the town, but I may need to go on a tear @ the poker tables to afford it. |

So the advice so far is:
 1. get drunk and stoned and eats lots of nice seafood with family (apocrypha)
 2. Smoke a joint. This time with your kids (don't have any children, that I know of, yaddayaddaetc.) (stray)
 3. Draft a will.(dusematic)
 4. Whisky or Rye (Sheepherder)
 5. find a nice isolated iceberg to float away on (Bzalthek)
 6. Start taking naps. (Signe)

Feedback:  Married, no kids, steady job, all family on East Coast of CDN, where we have actual to goodness icebergs (even in some parts of the Summer).

 1. yeah, but wife hates everything from the Ocean.  I know.  Disappointing.
 2. no kids, but still a good idea.
 3. actually this is a very good idea.  Not fun but yadda.
 4. sure
 5. have to move back home.
 6. yeah, but not really something I can really look back on. Not quite sky-diving or what-not.

I don't know.  I look back on my naps fondly.  Anyway, you probably should have started having reverse birthdays years ago like me.  Or random ones.  I might do 22 this year again.  All my other 22nd birthdays have been awesome.  For real. |

Take a trip.  Go someplace you always dreamed of going as a kid, no matter how dumb it seems.  Eat a quality meal.  Something that demonstrates you've learned about the difference between quantity and quality. |

Buy that new walker you've been eyeing lately! Seriously, Take a trip.  Go someplace you always dreamed of going as a kid, no matter how dumb it seems.
This. Also, go do something that you don't normally have time for/allow yourself to do/always wanted to do. And kill a panda. |

 How about a bike tour?
I'm planning to take a solo ride from Virginia to Montana.  Visit ghost towns, some western battlegrounds and monuments.

The new issue of National Geographic Adventurer magazine this month has an article on all the amazing travel deals available right now due to the slump in the economy and the travel business. Here are a few suggestions.... A) Spend 9 days hiking the 93 miles of the Wonderland Trail that completely circumnavigates Mount Rainier in Washington State. Then spend two days summiting the mountain with Rainier Mountain Guides. (maybe 2 grand? last time I looked?) B) Do a 14 day combined Kilimanjaro summit with crater overland safari. Kilimanjaro wont have anymore ice on the top with in the next 5 years IIRC so see it now before its gone. (approx. $4-4500 per person including air) C) Spend 2 weeks rafting the Grand Canyon. No, not with those gay outboard powered boats but a regular rowed raft. OARS and a couple of other outfitters will do 2 week long complete raft trips through the canyon with time for side hikes up the smaller branch canyons. D) Hike the Annapurna circuit in Nepal. (Plan it yourself for around $3000 grand or so including airfare) Each one of these are life list quality trips you will remember for the rest of your life (or at least until senility hits at 41), and are all in geographically different places. Pick your poison. If you have specific questions let me know. I do this shit for a living now. |

I did the Wonderland Trail and summited Rainier twice when I was living in Washington state back in the early 90's. My wife and I are doing Kilimanjaro next spring. This year we are already to booked up with other trips. |
