Is anyone else playing this game?  I haven't had this much fun in a game since Saint's Row 2 (waitaminute...) though the lack of campaign co-op is just a travesty.

Of all the sandboxy games that just dropped, (Infamous, Prototype and RF:G), this is the one that makes me want to keep playing it - destroying buildings with nothing but a co-opted truck and a sledgehammer will never get old.

Doesn't hurt that the score is better than that of most movies and that the multi is better/more entertaining than pretty much anything I've played that wasn't on PC.  Grab a Rhino pack and fuck shit up.

I heard Newegg has already dropped prices.

Here, looks like it sold out already for Xbox and PC at the $39 price point.

If you get a good game that's not selling (typical in this economic situation) then it's a superb idea to drop the price for a week or two.  Get people buying it and telling their friends about it.

If it's not selling, that's kind of tragic.  It's a ton of fun, has solid production values and delivers (in different ways) on the same level that SR2 does - a wide open gameworld that is flawed, yet still more fun than you'd think once you start exploring the systems and structures in it.  Hell - the Wrecking Crew mode alone is almost worth the price of entry to someone like me that misses the Crash mode in Burnout.

Infamous and Prototype aren't bad, but neither is half the fun that RF:G is.

I think the PC version is due out in August or so.  I know the original had some serious problems with maxing out the amount of destruction you could do, but that was years ago.  A few questions though:

1) Is the terrain deformable at all?  By which I mean the actual ground, rocks, etc, not just buildings?

2) Does the game have enough going for it to keep me playing past the novelty value of "WOOOOOO DID YOU SEE THAT?!?!"

1:  No.  Every single 'manmade' structure is destructible though - they have components and physics, so if you destroy enough for gravity to do the rest, it'll eventually fall.

2:  I've been playing it pretty much nonstop for a good bit in SP, and there's enough collectibles and achievement/trophy type shit to keep you occupied beyond the lackluster story.  Multi is good times as well, but since I'm on the PS3 version, it's not quite achieved critical mass yet and pretty much nobody but me has a fucking headset.

I went looking for a PC copy today, and everyone threw up their hands. If it exists, it's not available around here.

There's a Steam entry for it so it should eventually head there.

Metacritic has an August 25 release date for it.  Not sure if that's accurate or not.

They said the PC rev needed additional development time, but my guess is they wanted to head off piracy as much as possible, so they went console only for a two months or so.

Reactor Zero is doing the PC rev, not Volition.

Yeah I've been having a great time with the game, getting close to finishing it. The destruction never gets old, it really adds to the gameplay throughout.

It is more, or less destruction than Bad company?

I haven't had this much fun in a game since Saint's Row 2 [. . . ]

That's quite the endorsement, prompting me to order a copy right now.

This is the best sandbox game I've ever played and has ruined the genre for me.  SR3 is going to be disappointing if I can't completely destroy the city.

It's fun. Well the demolition aspect is incredible. But everything else feels inferior to Saints Row so far. I think all the stuff to do in SR2 has ruined sandboxes for me. If this didn't have the awesome aspect of smashing things and blowing them up, I don't think It'd keep my interest that long.

Might BiiF it when I get a couple more hours in.

What a waste. The X360 version is fine but this is the kind of game I'd play on PC. Except so much good stuff is coming out in Q4.

Ah well.

So this is a sci-fi version of GTA?  I am strongly thinking of picking this up tomorrow, is the non-combat stuff worth doing or is it just a kill-fest?

So far I've found:

Driving around - to and from missions.
Doing missions - smash this down, smash that down.
um...
Collect Salvage - it's what we call money!

"Side missions" - see how fast you can smash/blow this building up/see how fast you can shoot those towers down.

Yeah, that's pretty much the game, so far. Gotta play it a bit more, but it seems pretty much to be a one-trick pony.

You are either driving, destroying shit, or killing dudes on foot or in vehicles. So there really isn't any "non-combat" stuff other than driving. It's pretty much a pure action game set in an open world. Doesn't really feel like GTA at all. The game is pretty focused on destruction and combat - so while there may not be a huge amount of variety, what it does it does really well.

I'm finding myself more and more dissappointed in this game the more I play it. Particularly coming from Volition after SR2.

What the hell more do you want?  You can drive a tank through a 10 story building killing 10+ people at a time.  It's the best open world game since Mercenaries.

Plus, the MP is the best I've played this gen.  Unless you like buying shopping centers, flying wonky planes, and bling, this is SR2+ IMO.

EDIT:  I forgot all the side missions.  There are quite a few and all have different tiers of goals for better rewards

Did you like Mercenaries (the first one not the second)?  It's a lot like a Mercs/SR2 mixup with destructible environments set on Mars.  The story is so-so but everything else is polished to a sheen.

There story structure is set up like SR, you complete activities, earn salvage, and use said salvage to buy goodies to blow things up and finish missions.  Vehicles handle floaty like they would on a planet with 1/3 the gravity of earth and the graphics are great.  THe game is probably 10-15 hours if you don't race through the story missions.

My group of friends can't get enough.

So, I get a mission/activity/whatever, and blow stuff up. For 10-15 hours?

Really?

I agree on the graphics, I loved the look in the trailers. Mercenaries lasted about 30 minutes for me, so no, it doesn't sound like it's worth playing. Depressing since this summer is Empty.

Odd.  Mercenaries is one of my favorite games.  I love the mix of open environments and decent story telling.  I honestly fail to see how you could not enjoy it.  Plus, realistically blowing up a 10 story military structure is pretty god damn cool and not something you are going to see in another game unless it's scripted (RF is not).  Rent it, I think you are selling it short.

Six months into the year and I'm betting this is my GOTY.  I don't see how anything could come close.

Ahh, good point.  Unless some game that incorporates a USB accessory which performs fellatio is released this holiday season it's going to be a rough decision.

I honestly do not believe Red Faction is as good as Demon's Souls (yes, even without playing Red Faction). One redefines the genre. The other is a streamlined open world game with explodey bits. But let's not make it a discussion about that. I'll play Red Faction on your recommendation, but I find it hard to believe it's going to be a rough decision, and if Red Faction doesn't turn out awesome, I'll require an offering of one of your molars.

I think you'll be surprised at how much RF redefines the genre.  It could just be my love of watching buildings realistically crumble and crush people to death but it's going to be hard to go back to SR2/Mercs/GTA after playing this.

If you don't like it I'll be happy to offer a molar.  I'm having one pulled in a couple weeks anyways :)

Never liked any of those series anyway. awesome, for real

Seriously though, I think I'm using "redefines the genre" a little differently than you are. At the end of the day, Red Faction may be superbly crafted, but it's still an open world game where you do the same 4 varieties of missions as all the other open world games except they've replaced kill 10 rats with what looks like kill 10 buildings.  Mostly though, I was never one for being hyped up by landscape/architecture destruction. I prefer subtle things like shooting a gun or firing an arrow at a column and little chunks blowing up. Destruction of entire buildings (or even whole areas) is sorta, you know, a visceral thing I can't see as having lasting appeal. Which is sorta backed up by:

Sure you added it may be your GOTY or whatever, but the "What the Hell More do you Want?" part is sorta like, I don't know - Not very promising. WE'LL SEE THOUGH!

If that's as long as mercs held your interest I don't see this being any better for you.

Vehicle control is 100x better but lack of airstrikes counters that.

The way gravity works is pretty interesting if you place charges in the right places you can topple things fairly well, but the lack of mass to the buildings counters this when one little beam ends up holding up that whole side of a building.

The biggest down side I'm finding compared to mercs is I'm always out of damn ammo and resort to smashing guys with my sledge hammer trying to pick up more rounds.

Basically if you liked mercs one then get it you'll enjoy it,if you only found mercs to be meh then rent it.
