Way to make me feel old. Seriously? A typing machine?
I'm not sure what's so about that. Is it the usage of "typing machine" instead of "typewriter"? Yeah I had the same reaction - typing machine?

Ok, forgiven. It was just one of those typical misnamings I hear from people 20 years younger than me that really makes me go . ESL or Norwegianism is a perfectly acceptable excuse. Being too young to remember what a typewriter was called would have made me sad.

I miss the days of writing 50 page manuals in Word Perfect, and then waiting half an hour each for them to print on the Okidata dot matrix.
No, actually I don't.

I've been thinking about getting a pet rat. They might not *look* as cute as most other rodents, but they tend to be much friendlier.

Only problem with rodents as pets is that they don't live very long. I convinced my mom to get me a mouse when I was a kid because I told here I was going to use him to do a report on him in Science class. The mother fucker died before the report came due.

My last pair of rats lived about 5 years. They're clean, friendly, cute, and very social, so you HAVE to spend lots of time with them. But they're good pets.

I grew up with someone who was only allowed to have small caged pets and she chose rats. Only one died when it was less than four or so years old. Poor thing had some sort of tumour on it's little neck but it was still very sweet and affectionate. I thought they were wonderful.

A rat with a tumor on it's neck. Gee whiz, but that sure sounds adorable.

Rats are stinky. Or at least their pee is. I had two lab rats in college and that smell just would not go away.
|
I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Of course it was stinky! It was pee! I guess there might be some animal with non-stinky pee, but that would be weird.

Use recycled paper bedding instead of wood shavings and this problem will largely disappear.

I have had loads of rats as pets. I would recommend them as awesome pets for anyone who's looking for a small caged pet. They are friendly, clean, sociable, playful, can be trained and have personalities unlike most other small rodents.

I am now considering getting a rat. Odds that it could get loose and chew the fuck out of cables? Pretty high I'm sure.

Mine had a cage, but the door stayed open. They never chewed cables, but I had plenty of toys for them, and trained them early.

If you play with it, socialise it and give it plenty of distractions to playwith in the cage then the chances are it won't ever try to escape. Also have more than one rat. they are social creatures and prefer to live in groups (just make sure they are a same sex group).
I used to let my rats run around outside the cage while I was cleaning it and when we were playing together and I never had a problem with them chewing things they weren't supposed to. As long as you don't have cables dangling right alongside the cage you'll be fine.

Nice to see some rat love here. Our pet rat lived almost three years. Most of the time we left cage door open and he would generally just hang around on top of the cage. He also liked hanging out on the back of the couch when we watched tv. He'd actually come up and sit on my shoulder on his own when I sat there.
He liked to gnaw through cardboard, so we made the mistake of puting a cardboard cone (I think it was a big thread spool originally) in his cage. The dumb little thing actually got his head stuck in the end of it. I had to wedge a pair of scissors in beside his head to cut him free, and of course, I snipped a chunk out of his ear.
He even played with the dog, though only from the back of the couch, as the dog would have squashed him flat if he stepped on him.
So yea, that's my pet rat story. The whole key is handling the rat right from the start to make it comfortable with people. Note also, I would highly recommend getting a male rat, despite the big obvious balls. If you buy a female rat from a pet store, you have a very high chance that it is already pregnant (not a good thing).
To anyone who thinks a person can't get attached to a rodent the same way they would another pet, I'll end with this: When my rat got too old, I took it to the vet to have it euthanized.

I was very attached to my rats, and was torn up more when Anouk had to be put to sleep than when my dad died.
But I'd recommend 2 girl rats. Get them from somewhere that segregates genders, and get sisters. Male rats need way too much exercise, or they get the huge balls thing. Girls you simply need to watch for breast cancer, and get it taken care of early so it doesn't spread. Feel up your rats every week, for health! Also the paper bedding, compressed newspaper pellets in a ferret litter box to get them trained, and a good mixed diet. The food pellet thing seems to make them less happy, and unhappy rats don't keep themselves or their area clean.
I miss having them ride around in my hood, they learned to bite my earrings if they needed to be put down to poop.

Damn, some very convincing stories. My only issue is that my roomie isn't fond of any animal and worries about how everything will affect his stuff, which is why I asked about cables. I'm of the mindset that stuff can be replaced.

When I was about 14 I took my little brother to get a hamster from a local pet store. Of course he had to buy the biggest one there. Two days later we had about nine hamsters. Seven of them made it to about six weeks and we sold them back to the same store for $2.00 a piece. Made a small profit and it was actually a pretty neat experience watching them grow.
