Linky. No Joss Whedon, none of the original cast. Another "relaunch". Not that I think a new Buffy film with Whedon or any original cast would necessarily be any good but enough with the sodding remakes eh Hollywood?

Was the original movie a success? Budget $7,000,000 (estimated) Gross $16,624,456 (USA)
So if your out to make money, yes it was a financial success.

BSG was a bad bad thing in retrospect. Now everybody thinks relaunching old stuff makes mad money without having to think too hard.

Not that much. Hence the "Everybody". I don't count US reinterpretations of foreign series though, for some bizarre reason that happened all the time.

Yes, that much. Remakes/relaunches/reimaginings/retardeds have been with movies and television a lot longer than BSG.

Fans of the series will say it's the worst thing ever.
Haters of the series will say it's better than The Dark Knight.
It will make $5m more than it cost to make, and everybody will call that a "success" except for the production company.
Two years after it's released on DVD, Joss Whedon will make a new series. It will say the "Kazooies" are the executive producers and they will make money off of it while not working on it.
It will last 7 seasons, fans will love it, haters will watch every episode and hate it like they hate all of Whedon's stuff (I never understood why they do that, but they do) then people will argue for another five years online until someone reboots it again.
World keeps on spinnin.

I watched 3/4 of the first season of Buffy before deciding the only course of action was hating it. Does that make me a hater, or sane?

That's a lot of time spent into something you didn't like.

Not if you like being able to say with total authority that something someone else liked is terrible.
And you know I love that.

Lolz.
What I find most puzzling is why they're even doing this. It's still too close to the TV series, so the only people who would be interested in this would be Whedonfans, and Whedon did a pretty good job making sure his fans take the Kazuis. And the Kazuis must know this! Okay, new prediction!
Fans will be in uproar over this for the next two years.
The Kuzuies will go to online chats and give the typical Hollywood crap about "Give it a chance, we're big fans of Buffy too, the director and writers are a perfect fit" and all those buzz phrases.
Director and writers go to online chats and share memories of the TV series and how they cried when so-and-so died and how hard they're working to preserve all of Whedon's original vision.
Amber Benson somehow agrees to have a small part in the movie. Fans freak out.
Movie will make mad bank. A few people will still hate it and get on message boards and say how much it sucked, while most people retort "This is better than Whedon! We hate Whedon even though we loved him before!" And for some weird reason, Dollhouse will become the highest rated TV series in history. Two Buffy sequels follow.

It's not always bad. I thought Touching Evil was cool (and it was nice that it introduced me to Vera Farmiga). Also, nobody can dispute the awesomeness of The Magnificent Seven. Now if only somebody would remake Mr. Belvedere... Slyfiend: you are a madman, or maybe a genius. Or both. I'm only seeing this movie if they bring back Paul Reubens.

So if your out to make money, yes it was a financial success. Umm, no. Gross != profit. The movie theaters keep a piece of the ticket sales (the longer a movie is in theaters, the more the theaters get per ticket) and the budget excludes advertising. It broke even, at best. DVDs/VHS had to be small.

The first season of Buffy wasn't that great. It had the bare beginnings of the cast chemistry but that was about it. It's not really until Season 2 that most people start to like the show. So, if all you're basing it on is Season 1 then that's not really representative of the show. Not that it matters in your case really. Your hate for Whedon long ago left rational land far behind.

Eh, I figure most series got one good season in them. The question is which does the writer want to show? Heroes showed their good season right off the bat, while Buffy waited a while. I think it's a strategy thing.

Took star trek TNG about 2 seasons to ramp up. Not saying it's a good sign for a show or not but let's face it, there is such a thing as television sea-legs.

At least the characters in TNG were likable during the first season. There's no redeemable value to the first season of Buffy. Other than "it led to a second season." Well, yea, it also led to Angel, tasteless fuckers.

Nerds are really the only audience for whom a season full of ordinary-to-awful television is worth sitting through on the grounds that season 2 (or 3, or 4) "will get better". Or had that one great episode that justified the other 12 hours of junk.
See: Babylon 5, Buffy, all Star Trek post TOS, Heroes, lots more I don't care to recall.
We do it ourselves, we do.

You're right, and normal people are the only audience for whom 5 seasons worth of trash is worth sitting through. Reality TV can't die soon enough. It both peaked and jumped the shark with Real World, within 3 seasons.

Reality TV has turned a lot more into a gameshow format than "watch ordinary people do stuff" at this point - it's moved into the "dance monkey dance!" stages. At least as far as I've seen. Also, pretty much every new 'season' of a reality TV show introduces a whole new cast of characters.

Yes, it has. Or at least, the more popular shows in America and Europe (unless Big Brother is still going over there) are. That said, it's still crap. Which is what I was getting at.

Fox launches reality show where employees get the sack
NEW YORK - Endemol, the creator of 'Big Brother', is set to launch a reality show for the downturn on Fox in the US where, instead of leaving the house, people get voted out of their jobs.
Each episode of 'Someone's Gotta Go' will feature a company with around 25 to 30 employees that needs to cut numbers because of the downturn, but rather than be a question for management, the decision over who goes will be made by the employees themselves and shown on TV. Could reality TV get any worse? Someone should be put up against a wall and shot for that idea.

I gave up on network TV the day I flipped through all 7 local channels, and every single one had a reality TV show on. Even PBS.

I personally don't watch television based on the suffering of others. From Cheaters (fuck that show) to that A&E addiction deal, I will sometimes watch reality TV based on people being whorish idiots but that's about it.

Big Brother is still going in the UK. Can't be bothered to check if it's actually popular but from what I've heard it's changed into, "Fill house with borderline insane people and torture them until they crack." Stuff like being allowed nothing but porridge for a week while having to do large numbers of humiliating tasks. Frankly it sounds like its gone from boring to car crash tv to genuinely tragic. At least the press has stopped covering nothing but Big Brother every fucking summer so I only catch the odd wisp of whoever is fuck up of the week.
