Report: Would-be suicide jumper pushed off bridge

(CNN) -- A passerby pushed a would-be suicide jumper off a bridge in southern China because he was angry at the jumper's "selfish activity," Chinese media reported Saturday.

It happened Thursday in the city of Guangzhou as Chen Fuchao threatened to jump off Haizhu Bridge, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

The bridge has gained a "macabre" reputation with 11 jumpers having thrown themselves off the bridge since the start of April, Xinhua said.

Traffic was held up for nearly five hours and a crowd gathered as Chen sat on the bridge, threatening to jump, Xinhua reported.

Chen wanted to kill himself because he had 2 million yuan ($294,000) in debt after a failed construction project, Xinhua reported.

Lian Jiansheng, 66, who was passing by the bridge, offered to talk Chen down, Xinhua said. Police refused, but Lian broke through the police cordon and climbed to where Chen was sitting.

Lian greeted Chen with a handshake, then pushed him off the bridge, Xinhua said.

Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially-inflated emergency air cushion, damaging his spine and elbow in the fall, Xinhua said. He is now recovering in a hospital.

A photographer documented the sequence of events. The photographs show Lian, dressed in a T-shirt, shorts and socks, saluting to the crowd after pushing Chen off.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lian told Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Police took Lian away after the incident, Xinhua said. It did not say whether he would face any charges.

Yea, laughed out loud at this one. Hopefully he can get off with the "hey, I knew the inflated thing was there" and not manslaughter. I truly love his unapologetic tone.

Is it just me or was that not very high at all, fuck that guy they should have finished inflating the thing then shot him off with a beanbag anyways.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

8 meters? 26 feet and change? That guy would've been lucky if he'd died. More like TONS of external injuries and some internal. What a shitty place to jump from.

Anything under 40 feet is questionable for killing the jumper unless you land right on your head. So yeah 26 is WAY short.

Everybody should revise their comments after watching that video.

As far as I'm concerned it was a heroic act - he fooled the suicide jumper into shaking his hand, and used it to knock him safely onto the airbag.

That's not the side the guy was trying to use to kill himself - he was intending to jump off the other way.

Yeah, that looked like he knew exactly what he was doing, he looked over the side to see the crash pad before acting, he held the guy's arm to spin him after the guy held on with his other hand and ended up inverted. And the 'partially inflated' bag worked fine.

Story isn't as good that way Ohhhhh, I see.

Also, bag wasn't fully inflated at the time. I would agree that it looks like he wasn't trying to get the guy killed but he also could've waited for the bag to fully inflate before pulling him over.

He was right about the guy being selfish.  I have no idea why the cops let these jerks hold up a freeway for 5 hours.  If you are going to jump you just do it.  It's like the guy that talks a bunch of shit about kicking your ass in the bar - you know he's not going to do anything, because if he was, he would have just punched instead of talking shit.

These cops should "talk" people down by saying, "Ok, I'm coming over to cuff your ass, so if you are going to jump, you better do it now."

And if there is a cushion 25' below him, wtf?  Go all Riggs, handcuff him to you and jump!

How high was the actual bridge, how deep the channel under it? I've jumped off some really high stuff in my time, and not always into the deepest water. Sometimes a real fast current and smooth bottom (OF THE CHANNEL) can make up for a deep channel.

One of my favorites was about 50 feet or so into about 8 feet of water, but the river was moving so fast you ended up way downstream and the bottom was all shale, very smooth. You'd smack pretty good, but nobody ever got hurt. And it was a blind jump, you had to get a running start to clear the shelf underneath, so there was no stopping once you started.

That's one I don't do anymore :)

He's not a cop anymore.  Regular murderers don't usually have to fill out much in the way of paperwork.

Not sure about the bridge height but the guy fell 8 meters (26 feet).

Those bags are supposed to be partially inflated. If you fill them up like a balloon they'll be stiff enough to still hurt you and you can bounce off them and land on the ground anyway.

I hate it when they call these people "jumpers".  Unless they've actually already jumped they aren't jumpers.  They're just assholes holding up traffic.

Anyway, this guy is my new Chinaman hero.

They do in Texas, anyone committing a violent crime is required by law to notify the victim in writing beforehand.

That's why I have a stack of post-its by the door with the words "I will shoot you" printed in English and Japanese on them.

I just stick one of those on their back as they are running away and then they have been legally notified.
