Looking for some 4-player co-op games that people would recommend. Platform can be PC or 360, but the main thing would be co-op mode against an AI. No system link 360 games though, I can't afford another decent-sized TV for the second 2 players. :p

We've played WoW, are almost done with Titan Quest. Not sure how well this group would do with shooters, maybe co-op campaign shooters, but probably not well with online BF1942-type games/deathmatch, etc. Could even consider slower RTS games, as long as it's a campaign rather than random multiplayer games vs a couple of AI opponents.

SWAT 4 would get my vote. It'd be fucking hilarious to see a bunch of non FPS Players handle a supermarket hostage situation.

Is Halo 3 4p co-op on one screen?

SWAT doesnt seem like my bag, I'm a FPS player, and one of the others kind of is, older-school ones, but not so for the other two.

Left4Dead would be fun but is fps, Diablo 3 if you're *really* patient or many of the other MMO's. Sadly finding good co-op games is not easy.

l4d supports a maximum of 2 players in split screen.

Yeah, I checked that out. I'd need 2 xboxes, 2 TVs and 2 copies of L4D. Or 4 PCs capable of running it with 4 copies.

Ghost Recon, Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia, Rockband are the three we have at home.  Out of those, Ghost Recon is probably the most fun in a four person setting against the AI.  Monster Madness is fun, but really is aimed at kids and the gameplay suffers from some bugs.  Rockband is Rockband, the kids love it though.

there's a mod to give split screen support to the pc version. Don't know if they made it 4 player capable yet.

Age of Booty for 360 is pretty good and you can play it coop vs. AI.

If you aren't adverse to hopping out of the computer/360 realm to get board games, there are a number of good coop board games:
Pandemic
Shadows over Camelot
Battlestar Galactica

I couldn't tell from your post, but do you only want games that can have 4 player split screen or is online coop ok?

You could try something totally different like Rainbow 6: Vegas, I think that allows 4 players, and it really fun. You might want to check on the 4 player thing though.

Also, there is always Marvel Ultimate Alliance. That is 4 player coop.

Basically, it's myself, my wife and two friends who are brothers who come past every couple weekends. The three of us guys have the PNP RPG background, we've all played WoW, I don't really have the setup for a proper boardgame session here, I'm the bigger computer/video gamer of the bunch. I could potentially run some small 400-500pt games of WH40k one day with me GMing them to help the others along, but there's some significant work to happen before that can happen (cleaning up the wargames table, buying the new 40k, figuring out the new rules which are supposed to be a bit simpler, writing up army lists, and then modelling and painting the forces.  ACK!

For PC, online can be okay, but LAN is better since one friend brings his lappy and we have enough desktops here for the other 3 of us. My PC is pretty good, the other 2 are decent, but the friend's laptop is showing it's age. It can run WoW and Titan Quest, but both on superlow settings.
For 360, I've only got the one TV and 360 set up, so splitscreen is needed. I actually have a second 360, but the only other TV handy is a little 19" WS, so it makes 360 link games difficult.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, it's not a real easy thing to do, given the variation on ability and genre the other 3 all have, and the hardware requirements.

And yeah, we're actually playing through MUA on 360, and Titan Quest on PC.

We've done WoW to the point where 3 of us have stopped playing completely. We all have D2, but after we finish TQ, it'll be a bit hard to look at unless they add modern resolutions to it, and I'd rather take a break from exactly more of the same.
Played through D&D Heroes on original XBox in the past, and while I do have the 2 XMen Legends games which we haven't played yet, they're not BC on the 360, and I'd rather take a break from exactly more of the same.

Played through Gauntlet and Castle Crashers on XBLA. Might go back to CC on day for another runthrough, but it's not something you can really play in a sustained way.

We tried GRAW1/2 on 360 last week, but since none of us knew what to do or how to play it, the game just wiped us out and then told us we lost the game while we all said "WTF?"

Got Worms and Bomberman, but they don't seem that interested. Likewise the party mode in Flatout: UC was great for one night but they're not keen on playing through it again. They sadly have no interest in Guitar Hero/Rock Band.

I know Dawn of War 2 has co-op for the campaign but it might be only 2 player.

EDIT: Yeah only 2. However I did find this site:

It seems to let you search by platform/number of players or whatever.

Actually, they might do better than FPS players. It was actually pretty enjoyable dragging some ArmA and Raven Shield players in and then explaining (afterward) that they were supposed to be yelling at people before they got cleanly shot in the head as part of a concerted tactical movement, and that's why the score sucked total ass.
I'm kind of curious what non-FPS-players would do with the compliance button and ROE. :)

I have had some fantastic fun with co-op Operation Flashpoint in the past. It's old and clunky and might take a fair amount of tweaking and twiddling to make it work these days but when it all comes together it's awesome.

Plus it's really unforgiving, leading to many hilarious slaughters, often at the hands of the players themselves. Landing helicopters with everyone inside upside-down was a particular favourite  why so serious?

Armed Assault is pretty much the actual successor to that, despite the name. Which seems to be a bit of a sore point between Bohemia and Codemasters, according to the manual.

And yes, a lot of fun, now that we're past the point where one asshole can hang up an entire co-op game. :)

I'm not sure which is my favorite OpFlash co-op moment, but I'm torn between a PITA flight down a canyon at 20 feet to drop off the rest of the team, then turning around not 10 seconds later just to pick the wrong muzzle flashes and hose them all into oblivion with the minigun, or stopping to snipe and having a poorly-landed helo bounce down the hill at me an inch at a time to finally crush me. I remember asking my spotter "What is that goddamn crunching sound? Do you hear that?", and having turned around to look all he had time to say was "Uhh, dude..." and *splat*.

I'm eventually going to pick up COD: WoW for its 4 player co-op and Nazi Zombie mode, but yeah, not too many out there.

You probably don't have one because you didn't mention it in your initial post,
but there are some great 2-4 player games for handheld systems these days.

On the off chance you and your friends have access to some gameboys, try
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time.  I know, it sounds awful, but
it is pretty sweet.

As I don't have a 360 (or TV for that matter), I might suggest trying your hand
at Quake live.  It's a shooter, but browser based and free.  I think you can play
against bots with friends, but don't quote me on it.

Thanks for the suggestion, and while it's not going to work for me, any extra suggestions in the thread can only help others.

My wife and I have GBAs in a drawer somewhere from when we did some travelling a few years ago, but the friends won't spring for GBAs and games to go with them. I'm not really a fanof handhelds when I could be using a monitor or TV anyway.

I've been looking through my collection for things that might work. I can try to get them to play BF1942, as it's pretty forgiving, can play co-op LAN, and you can team up with multiple people in a vehicle, etc. Got Star Wars BF2 out for the same reason, though 1942 is simpler and more elegant for an introductory FPS.

Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds might be something as well, though it'd pretty much just be deathmatch against the computer, at least I have enough copies accessable.

What would really be ideal, is some kind of multiplayer LAN sandbox game on PC with a lot of scope and med-low system reqs (around WoW level), so the friend's laptop can run it. The kind of thing where one person can drive the tank/jeep/spaceship/etc while other players man the turrets or guns or whatever. That's why I'm going to try against the odds to get BF1942 a go, though a true game of this type would be far better.

Played through Gauntlet and Castle Crashers on XBLA. Might go back to CC on day for another runthrough, but it's not something you can really play in a sustained way.

Geometry Wars isn't my thing. While arcade type games like CC are okay for a runthrough, games with a bit more to them are better. We played through something like 165 levels of Gauntlet one night on XBLA - I wanted to kill myself by the time they left. - Of course, none of us are likely to ever play Gauntlet again for as long as we live after that.
