Day Watch and Night Watch were pretty awesome. Not TOTALLY vampire movies, but vampire-esque.

The last good vampire movie I saw was the 1987 cult hit Near Dark, which awsomely is available on Hulu. In fact, maybe I'm just not a vampire movie fan, since for the most part I'm bored by them.

30 Days of Night actually isn't bad. More of a survival type of movie though. Post-Anne Rice though, it's hard to find a vampire story that doesn't romanticize them somehow. Not that that's bad, but...

30 Days of Night would have been ok if not for Hartnett. He just fills me with an irrational rage.

I don't see anything wrong with him. Decent enough actor. Kind of reminds me of a young Tommy Lee Jones, without the pizza face. [edit] actually, i don't think tommy lee jones has a pizza face.. something rough about him though, which hartnett isn't.

This movie was godawful fucking horrible. It really was that bad. Worse than that bad. And the "real" reason vampires don't go out into daylight? Ugh. Jesus fucking christ. And sucking the fucking poison out? Really? I mean, REALLY? But now that I've seen it, it's provided me with a great new research topic: Vile, stupid shit like this is symptomatic of an increasingly developmentally retarded female sexuality. Seriously, I'm in college classes with bitches who honestly named this pile as the best movie they've ever seen, and that Edward is the "perfect" man. That shit made me cringe before I saw it, but now I can't wait for spring break to end so I can ask them what the fuck they were thinking. No girl who's had more than a year's worth of periods should be able to stand this shit.
Kiss of the Vampire and Shadow of the Vampire were both good vampire movies, though they really didn't have vampires in them. And yes, we need evil vampires again. Cunning, manipulative, lawful/neutral evil vampires. Also, werewolves. What the fuck is up with St. Christopher originally being a werewolf and the church changing it? Having 18' tall, monstrously strong, dog-headed cannibal saints is just way cooler than guys who carry people on their backs.
Also, fuck twilight some more.

The last good "vampire" movie. Depends on your definition of vampires.
Day Watch and Night Wath are obvious town and the correct answers.
Let the Right One In is a very very good contender for one of the best ever though.

Probably one of my favorites is Innocent Blood (made a thread about it I think), but I would admit to it not qualifying as scary in any way. Don Rickles as a vampire is absolutely hilarious though.

I enjoyed Shadow of the Vampire. Was a pretty good movie, with an amazing performance by Willen Dafoe. Always nice to see Cary Elwes get work as well.

I have to throw my lot in with 30 days of night. Sure it wasn't a 'great' movie but it was entertaining and had a more classic type of vampire. Bloodthirsty, menacing and still with very human qualities. Not going to be in the top ten vampire movies of all time but it was the last good one I'd seen recently.

I enjoyed Shadow of the Vampire. I only saw Shadow of the Vampire for the first time the other day, simply can't understand how it passed me by this long - a superb cast, a wonderful mythologising of the Nosferatu shoot, some breathtakingly brilliant shots - the first time you see DaFoe approaching a cage of weasles (his supper) he's backlit and blurred and his finger twitching, creeping movements are sinister as all hell. Also notable for a very early Eddie Izzard movie role! As for the original question, I too would also recommend Shadow of the Vampire, and also the two Nochnoi Dozor Night/Day Watch movies, which are inventive and insane. 30 Days of Night had a nice, fresh take on the Vampire as a creature but has many flaws as a movie. I will have nothing to do with that Twilight business in any form. Even Stephen King's called Meyer an attrocious hack. I'm really looking forward to Let the Right One In being released in the UK.

Heh. Stephen King. I don't know, I'm not sure his opinion matters.. I'm not going to go out of my way to defend Twilight or anything (boy, but that Edward Cullen is quite dreamy), but King's stories bare no relation to this. None whatsoever. I'm not sure why his opinion matters. It's a romance movie, with a little "suspense", and pretty much similar to True Blood except it takes place in highschool -- and has less mature concepts. While King writes horror, suspense, and the occasional futuristic spaghetti western or prison gang rape scene.

So the opinion of a prolific, yet hackish, writer doesn't matter when calling another writer a hack? No, I'd say it does. It really, truly is garbage writing. The wife and daughter got into it recently and I couldn't stomach a few pages. They're downstairs watching it on pay-per-view right now and I've caught enough to just make me want to laugh. It's horrible, and filled with cliche hack writing from other b-and lower movies over the years. "He looks at you like something he wants to eat!"

No-one mentioning John Carpenter's Vampires? Not a great film but enjoyable for sure. I also like "Blade" - I guess most people here probably won't. I already know that a lot of you hate "From Dusk Til Dawn" too because of the unholy combination of Tarantino and Rodriguez but works for me. "Frostbitten" is an interesting Swedish vampire film that on the surface sounds a lot like "30 days of Night" but isn't.
Abel Ferrara's "The Addiction" with Christopher Walken is fantastic vampire film but in no way conventional. Tony Scott's "The Hunger" is also worth checking out as is Roman Polanski's spoof "Fearless Vampire Killers". George Romero's stab at a vampire film was "Martin" is pretty good too. I also heartily recommend the Tobe Hooper directed Lifeforce which is about vampires from space and features a very naked Mathilda Mey and, in another scene, has Jean-Luc Picard turning into a very naked Mathilda Mey.
Recent vampire films have been few and far between when it comes to good ones and even more that haven't been influenced by either Anne Rice or Joss Whedon.

From Dusk Till Dawn is cool enough... Keitel and Clooney are really cool in it, but it's really not my idea of a vamp movie. What can I say? I like the more romantic take on them. It's just that I want to see the darker side of that, like Dracula. Anyways, there's all of these different takes on vampires, but it's that original one that seems to be lost these days. We have romantic takes on vampires, but where they're benevolent anti-heroes. We have rabid zombie vampires like Dusk or 30 Days. We have samurai sword weilding vampire hunting vampires. We have vampires with guns fighting werewolves with guns. But where the fuck is Bela Lugosi in all of this? Oh wait. He's dead. Anways, someone would actually be doing something original at this point if they went back to the basics... instead of this other stuff.

Jack Crow: You ever seen a vampire? Father Adam Guiteau: No I haven't. Jack Crow: No... Well first of all, they're not romatic. Its not like they're a bunch of fuckin' fags hoppin' around in rented formal wear and seducing everybody in sight with cheesy Euro-trash accents, all right? Forget whatever you've seen in the movies: they don't turn into bats, crosses don't work. Garlic? You wanna try garlic? You could stand there with garlic around your neck and one of these buggers will bend you fucking over and take a walk up your strada-chocolata WHILE he's suckin' the blood outta your neck, all right? And they don't sleep in coffins lined in taffata. You wanna kill one, you drive a wooden stake right through his fuckin' heart. Sunlight turns 'em into crispy critters.

The actual book John Carpenter's Vampire$ was based on is an awsome novellete. Written by texan John Steakley, it has a lot the movie entirely skips, and in the end, is an entirely different and awsomer experience. Don't get me wrong, I love John Carpenter, but he cut waaaaay too many corners making the movie.
