A view to the last moments of HGL.

The fact that there were players who had no idea HGL was shutting down for good must make CS staff weep openly everywhere.

At 11pm CST, Tiggs announced “Sadly the servers and forums will be shutting down in one hour.” Every so often she would update with a countdown of time remaining.

She did manage one plug for her new job with “Since this world is ending why not join another world that ended… FallenEarth.com”

So what happened to people who'd paid for the lifetime sub? Were there any refunds of any kind?

Nothing happened. No refund from Flagship, no replies. Even to the credit card company when disputing the charge. So it all worked out in the end.

If the credit company gets no reply do they do a chargeback and give you the money back?

Yes they did. So at least I'm only out the cost of the initial purchase. Sadly I did the EA download, so I don't even have a box to sit on a shelf and look sad.

I did buy the box and it really was very nice.  I never buy lifetime subs to anything.  I have a hard time making a game last a month, let alone a lifetime.  Owning a lifetime sub would probably make me less motivated to play rather than more because I'm contrary that way.

I don't remember.   swamp poop  I tossed a lot of my game boxes away when we moved from Britain to save space.  Not that I care too much.  I might have most of my discs left over but I'll probably toss those away when we move back.  I'm one of those people who LOVE to throw stuff out.  Righ, not so much.

I have the CE box within another box, stashed inside an even bigger box. The entire ordeal made me want to drown in a tub. This was my first and last lifetime sub. I am a nub.

You needed that to start a collection of stinky things that don't actually smell!  I bet I could dig up more stuff like that if I ever get motivated to spring clean the junk room.  Do you need another I Don't Care package?

It's pretty stunning, actually. I've explained it so many times to my mother, even bought her a new tv. She still has no concept of what is going to happen. Right now we've got it to the point of "get the vouchers in case we need them." Which we won't. She just can't understand why she's going to lose several stations (reduced range of digital) and most of the stations she gets are cutting out all the time (no more 'snowy' channels). I rofl when I hear that garbage ad about the superior picture and sound of digital tv. It fucks rural people right in the eyes and ears, I'd say all but two of her channels will be unwatchable. She had maybe eight analog channels, two being tough to watch due to snow. Now she's got something like twelve digital channels, but can only watch two.

And my fiancee's mother is worse...she wants an hdtv because she thinks that's what she needs. And she has poor vision, so she needs a large tv and the improved detail is lost on her.

For a relatively straightforward switchover (despite the inferior quality of the product...), they've sure clusterfucked this one.

Nobody cares about rural people. They have farming and shit to do and shouldn't be watching TV anyway.  If you don't have cable you're subhuman and not a real American. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

It doesn't.  However we willingly keep them sub-human by not allowing them cable access, and thus continue to not care bout them.
