My FOUR YEAR OLD asked my mother in law today which version of Womanizer she liked, the one by the "the guys" or the "the lady".
How the hell did this happen?

My son's latest is Cat Party. Yeah, that Cat Party. It's awesome because no one knows what the hell he's talking about... even him. He just knows it's one of my ringtones. Previously it was "Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's my birthday" and variants, which he probably got from his new favorite show, The Mighty B. Before that it was "Who let the dogs out? WOOF WOOF WOOF!" which drove my wife nuts.
Normally, the wife and I only expose him to good music but his tastes are a bit off since he currently likes listening to Smashmouth. Blame lies with America's Funniest Pets and People, for this and Tag Team, and so many other things.

My four-year old boy was being teased to the point of tears by his cousins that he "kissed a girl and he liked it". He doesn't roll that way yet, apparently. My kids walk around singing the 1960's Spider-Man theme. This makes me happy in the soul. |

My three-year old quite like its when I play NIN's Ghosts in the car. I'm not yet tempted to play any earlier stuff to him yet.
My 8 month old just goes to sleep - fortunately with a smile. (She also relaxes to Mozart though.)

I remember well the  and  reactions I got from you all 6 years ago when I said my then-4-year-old's favorite song was Rob Zombie's Dragula. Someone pointedly asked me wtf I was doing letting my daughter listen to it at such a tender age. The lack of Mz. Spears, Cheetah Girls, Johnas Brothers etc in my house right now was so very, very worth all of the hazing. Phhbt. |

I need to be careful about being too judgemental about today's music. When I was in high school in the early 80's, I thought most fo the music was shit and preferred to listen to the stuff from the late 60's and early 70's. There's always a lot of crap around.

My dad got me started with Iron Butterfly's Inagadadavida on my mono Fischer Price record player. If your child has been exposed to Britney it might take a swift dose of death metal to cleanse your child. |

I whistle that song when I'm questing in WoW, breaking out vocally at the TRA-LA la la, la-la-la-la, la la la la-la la-la la part. My wife just shakes her head and sighs. Even more awesome is when Cartoon Network, Boomerang or Adult Swim tosses on some of the clips or the theme song at commercial breaks. "Restored" theme song Wow, I didn't think it was possible for YouTube to have worse quality vids but that one tries. Ah well, he's giving effort and nobody cares except about the song anyway. Oh, also Liz Phair did a cover. See it here.While I'm thinking on it; get your kids into Rock Band and Guitar Hero if only for their exposure to rock music.   |

Edit: Mark Barkan is the producer but as you can tell from the comments it's actually Liz and Material Issue performing the song. |

I used to sing that to my son when he was a couple of months old to get him to stop crying. It always made him stop and start laughing - whether it was the song or my singing is irrelevant. His godfather serenaded him with "Body Count's In The House" much to his mother's consternation. Not that she knows who or what Body Count is. She'd rather play Celine Dion at him but I put my foot down. (Needless to say I didn't marry her for her music tastes.) I have a CD called This is Cult Fiction Royale which is full of old film and UK TV theme tunes (like Bullitt, Get Carter, The Persuaders, Man in a Suitcase, The Sweeney, The Professionals etc.) It's pretty damn awesome but they obviously ran out of ideas by the end of the second CD as they included the themes to The Magic Roundabout and Tiswas too (which UK folk of a certain age may remember with a certain fondness. Or not.) |
