Remake coming out December 12

I'm a big fan of the original and it looks like they are taking this a different direction, but the trailer makes it look like it might be interesting.

Jury's out.  I'm not blown away by the trailer but I don't despite Keanu as much as some people do.  The fact that they're changing it to be more "relevant" concerns me - and by more relevant, that means another fucking eco-thriller.

Wall-E did the eco-lesson right because they didn't preach it. Just had some fat humans get off their lazy asses and start fixing shit up right.

TDTESS remake looks like it's going to be Keannu Reeves preaching at the audience in a monotone. God, that's a worse threat than blowing shit up.

Plus it totally misses the point of the original. Which I guess makes it a proper hollywood remake.  awesome, for real

I'll see it expecting an absolute turd.  It looks like a heavy-handed cash-grab made by greenpeace extremists and not an examination on man's self-destructive behavior.

Original was serious fucking awesome, therefore any remake is doomed to failure simply by the high standard it has to reach.

Plus, y'know, Hollywood. Edits based on test audience responses. Predictable crappy plot lines and obligatory love interests, etc. Magic 8-ball says outlook is bleak.

This is true.  So far I think the only remake that was actually better than the original, is John Carpenter's The Thing.  I can't comment on The Departed or Insomnia, having not seen the originals, but those two were actually good movies on their own.

Ocean's Eleven with George Clooney I thought was way better than the original. But I was never much of a Sinatra-the-actor fan.

Definitely. Too bad they had to make sequels.

Good point, well made, I agree completely.

Never saw the original, but the clooney movie was a lot of fun.  Like said before, too bad they had to sequel the thing.

I can intellectually separate remakes from originals so I don't really see any need for comparison. I just hope it's a good sci-fi movie as those are few and far between.

I like the Ocean's 11 sequels. Especially 12. Vincent Cassel is always pretty cool. That said, the original Ocean's 11 is schlock.. it would be easy to top it. Sinatra had better movies -- Manchurian Candidate, for one. I don't think the Denzel remake was as good.

Anyways..

I just hope it's a good sci-fi movie as those are few and far between.

My only real concern too.

The Departed was a very good film but I do prefer Infernal Affairs which has some subtle differences that just make it marginally better for me. YMMV.  I also like Nolan's Insomnia but it's more because of the way he shot it. The original had more interesting characters and greater ambiguity in the story and the character motivations.

David Cronenburg's The Fly was a far superior film to the original.
Evil Dead 2 is nominally a sequel but essentially a much better remake of Evil Dead
Casino Royale! (Although it's not really fair to compare the two)
The Maltese Falcon (1941) - much better than the original.

You can start to get a little obscure too: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is sort of a remake of "The Three Outlaws" but both deal with the same factual story.  Similarly De Palma's "Scarface" is derived from same story as the Howard Hawks 1932 version. "Alien" is a very similar story to "It! The Terror From Outer Space" (about an alien that stows away on a rescue ship) but it's never really been classed as a remake.

Nic Cage's The Wicker Man is much funnier than the original.  why so serious?

Wait until Lucas dies and they remake Star Wars.

Oh, who am I kidding, Lucas will re-make it himself to 'fix' it.

The only way this movie could be better is if Michael Bay directed it.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Keanu is once again perfectly cast as an alien with no emotions.

I think Hollywood is figuring him out.

Also, a Bruce Campbell cameo is required.

Two days before release and there are few - if any - official reviews of it.

I suspect it's a dud.

I love reading Ebert's reviews when he doesn't like the movie he's reviewing.  He's in especially good form with his take on Keanu's performance in this movie.

Over and out.

Criticizing Keanu is silly. He's crap. We all know it. But we like him anyways. This is a law of the universe or something.

People who are overt about saying they don't like him like him the most too, by the way.

Just came back from seeing it.

Keanu is not preachy. He's well cast though. His Klaatu is perfect. Deadpan and utterly alien with a human face.

The other bits of it, the ecological parts are interesting. John Cleese's rather limited role in it is the preachiest and most hopeful at the same time.

And through half of the flick you'll want to kick Will Smith's kid in the crotchicles.

Oh, and Jennifer Connelly? Still hot.
